Distant Worlds - Why This Ship?

So...we've had plenty of discussion so far regarding ship builds for the expedition - Asp or Conda? How to squeeze that extra 0.01ly out of the jump range without losing the SRV's or shields. That sort of stuff.

This isn't (supposed to be) one of those. Discussions aplenty in that vein abide elsewhere.

Instead...I suppose I was curious. For everyone who's ship of choice is based on something other than that it's the 'best'...why?

Nostalgia? Is the ship significant to you in some way? Have you been through a lot with it and don't like the idea of using something else? Is there a bit of RP involved? This is 'just' the ship your character/crew uses, and that's why? Is there a story of some sort behind her? Do you like the idea of a challenge and want to attempt the expedition with something a little unusual? Are you in it entirely for the social aspect, and making those last long-range jumps doesn't matter so much? Or does it just feel right?

Replies sought, of course. In Character, Out Of Character, in the form of a drabble, short story, sonnet or abstract poem, even. Anything. The more, the merrier:)

Well I have explored in the DBE, Conda, Python, Asp, Cobra, Hauler and T6.
To me nothing comes close to the Asp regarding range, heat management, scooping, turning & comfort. (all of these together like jack of all trades,not on their own)

You know, it's funny, I took my asp to Sag A*, but haven't really bonded with it until later.

Nevermind, I missed the Distant Worlds part of this, at a jump range of less than half that needed, my Orca can't do it.

Well I have explored in the DBE, Conda, Python, Asp, Cobra, Hauler and T6.
To me nothing comes close to the Asp regarding range, heat management, scooping, turning & comfort. (all of these together like jack of all trades,not on their own)

I'm moving away from the purist 'numbers' perspective of ship choice now to a more Role Play approach to ship choice.
All ships are viable options. You are the Cdr of a deep space exploration vessel which has flaws.

They all have flaws! That's the beauty of it... You always make some sacrifices to get a certain attribute to your liking. Everything has a price, or at the least, a sacrifice.

Agree, it's a deliberate mechanic:) its why debate over ship choice is interesting and very helpful but ultimately will always fall into the "well this ship is good at X but is really bad at A and B"

If flying across the galaxy was akin to driving across America, and you were given a choice to do the driving, what would you prefer to do the trip in?

Would you chose Practicality over Style?

I guess it's a question for a Python guy like me.

There's a number of different reasons for my choice. I love my Asp, she's a great ship, and I explored my way to Pioneer in her. But she was never maxed out in terms of range - most I got out of her was 32 Ly. Range and endurance matter to me, but not so much that I'm willing to fly a ship that can't defend itself, run away or forgive the inevitable pilot error. I never wanted to get used to the idea that outer space is safe just because it is now. (Or was over the last year.)

I was never after records, a membership in the 65k club or anything like that. I explore for the awe-inspiring hobby that it is - one that hasn't gotten old in a year of playing Elite. But I've travelled a lot, and with the prospect of half a year out there, I had the need for a ship that felt like I could, well, live in for half a year. Call it RP, I'm not sure, but with planetary landings, the Python feels safer, more real - putting her down on the edge of a crater, I can imagine standing up, pouring myself a cup of coffee and sitting down on the stairs behind the pilot seats. Meanwhile, she's still small enough that I can stand being alone in it - something I can't in an an Anaconda.

Will it be a challenge? Sure, but I won't regret it. I can stand the thought of spending six months in that ship, travelling at my pace, while reaching most of the waypoints. Will I make it to Beagle Point? Probably not, but who knows? It's only one waypoint, but it's three months going there and the journey home as well, and I need to feel comfortable during that entire time, both RP-wise and in terms of capabilities other than range. Min-maxing my ship would be the opposite. (To me. Different folks, different strokes and all that.)
 
I have an Anaconda kitted out for Distant Worlds. I went maximum range because I don't want to burn out on the journey, it's the only reason.

My heart still says 'take the Clipper' which is a 25ly fit vs a 37ly conda. I did 70ish k ly in that boat on my last trip, love flying her. And she looks better in screenshots.

For me it's about options. I choose the Anaconda to have the option to jump far, the option to be able to drive recklessly around in my SRV and know that I have 3 other SRV's stored in my ship. The option to be able to refuel others in case they run out of fuel. The option to defend myself should someone or something hostile appear.
And then I have some history with my ship as well.

That being said - and I thought long and hard about this; We have a fleet of practically 2 ships... the Asp and Anaconda. I spent most of my time in beta on different ships and builds before I decided - the dream of an iCourier lightly armed for escort detail on the far side of the galaxy was intriguing, but again, it limited my options.

This is pretty close to my attitude as well, although there's almost certainly a hefty bit of RP mixed in. I've invested more in my Clipper than in any other ship in the game, sold everything else I had at the time to buy her and six tons of cargo, which left me with just enough credits for a 1E fuel scoop...

And now, she's become superb, fast multi-role ship - a little light on armament and shielding, maybe, and not top-of-the-line by any means, nor is she really optimised for anything, but she's become my ship, and I simply don't feel like using anything else. I may have mentioned elsewhere that I don't really expect to make it to Beagle Point anyway, but she can still make most of the waypoints while carrying SRVs and fuel limpets and has a top jumping speed close enough to 1 kylie an hour (which is actually still much better than the last ship I did a long-ish - time wise - exploring run with), and that's more than enough for me...

Plus, she's a large ship (I'd estimate a little over 100m or so LOA), she'd have to run with a crew (even though that's not actually in-game yet - I'd guess 12-15 at the low end for a merchant ship potentially rising to maximum of just over 100 for a warship or pirate of a similar size), and that means characters, which creates a good potential for satisfying the nagging itch in the back of my head for a story or two along the way...

If making it to Beagle Point was all that mattered to me, I'd be using the Space Van

Nevermind, I missed the Distant Worlds part of this, at a jump range of less than half that needed, my Orca can't do it.

I did have DW specifically in mind, but even if you're not doing that your views on exploring and your ship of choice would still be more than welcome if you want to share them...
