Diversify NPC Dialogue

Hey guys, can you please add some different NPC dialogues to the game when you get the time? It's super immersion-breaking when you run into several dozen differently-named NPCs throughout the galaxy who all say the exact same sentences over and over :S Even just different variations of the same general statement would suffice. There's no need to add anything too fancy, I'm sure you plan to expand on NPC stuff like that in the future. But for the time being, just a few more dozen randomized dialogue tweaks would do a world of good towards increasing immersion in the game instead of seeing the same old lines over and over again.

That is all. Thanks for reading, and thanks for the epic game :) Peace!

This is a pretty common suggestion. You can find nine hundred threads saying the same thing by searching 'NPC dialogue'. Why it's not a thing, I have no idea.

Maybe we can petition FD by responding to newsletters, announcements, official forums etc with the repeating NPC phrases?

I consign your remains to the void.

If you consider the rest of the writing, stories, missions, powers & anything else I can't think of right now. I there's more dialogue than we realise.

It does feel like at every large update, there's more & more variation so maybe this is just something they continually add too as development passes.

As far as npc names, frontier could add a simple line of code to use a random sequence generator to use a first name, then a sir name - Basically this would be an easy, quick-fix as far as certain names are concerned, without the need to program a few more hundred/thousand.

This is already how it works I believe, kickstarter folks added to the pool of names as I understand it.

Oh right cool then. Seems to be there's often the same names of npcs - perhaps frontier could increase the random sequence frequency :)

In a recent dev update they mentioned the NPC chatter will be expanded.

There’s a change of changes for NPCs including fixing fighters not spawning from capital ships. Pirates will no longer scan a target if they’ve pirated it. Some other causes for unnecessary NPC chatter identified and removed – the variation on chatter has been increased as well. NPCs can now interdict other NPCs while in supercruise. NPC police responses have been rebalanced so you shouldn’t only get low value ships responding to crimes.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever felt as painfully ambivalent towards an idea as this one.

On the one hand, the dialogue in ED is almost entirely horrifyingly bad. On the other hand, I want it to get better, which can't happen unless and until FD either bites the bullet and hires a capable dialogue-writer or writes even more bad dialogue themselves. Practise makes perfect - and god knows FD really needs the practise.

Having thought it over, I must err on the side of optimism and hope and increasing the skillset of my favourite developer.
+1 for more dialogue. Eventually, they'll be good at it.

I think "variation" in that quote is more likely to refer to increasing the randomness of the sentences produced, rather than increasing the pool of sentences from which they are drawn. They're still likely to be very limited.
