Divide the Exhibit Animals

This is hypothetical, obviously. Let's say we get these new exhibit types:
  • Large/Long Exhibit - 8x4x4 (i.e. twice as long, same width and height).
  • Halved Exhibit - two 4x2x4 sections (i.e. two modules within one 4x4 grid piece).
  • Quartered Exhibit - four 2x2x4 sections (i.e. four modules within one 4x4 grid space).
Including the regular and walkthrough, that gives us five exhibit types.

You're goal is to divide the existing exhibit animal roster into these exhibits, including the standard exhibit. Let's also assume that each species can only be assigned to one type of exhibit, so you can't add the same species to more than one. How would you do it?

Large
  • Green Iguana
  • Antillean Iguana
Standard
  • Goliath frog
  • American bullfrog
  • Diamondback Terrapin

  • Diamondback rattlesnake
  • Puff Adder
  • Eastern brown snake
  • Eastern blue tongued Lizard
  • Desert Horned Viper
  • Common Death Adder
  • Boa Constrictor
  • Gila Monster
Quartered
  • All Arthropods (Centipede, spiders, scorpion, beetles etc)
Walkthrough (no changes)
  • Butterflies
  • Fruit Bat
  • Three toed sloth

Extra large: both iguanas

Large: yellow anaconda and boa,

Medium: bluetongue skink, gila monster, the bullfrogs, terrapin, remaining snakes, axolotl, tree frog

Small: all the inverts, dartfrogs, salamander and newt

WE: sloth, bat, bflies

I hope thats all?

Honestly, the way Cap did it, I don't think it could be beat. That's what I would've done, literally exactly the same.
NZ, I think Cap deserves a prize🤣

Pretty much the same although i would also keep in standard the desert lizards (gila monster and blue tongue skink) and the boa constrictor.

Large:
Green iguana
Antillean iguana

Standard:
Boa constrictor
Yellow anaconda

Halved:
All other reptiles & amphibians

Quartered:
All arthropods

It's interesting - I'd be putting most of the small frogs into the quartered exhibit myself. They are all very tiny.

Personal experience at zoos with frog exhibits influenced my choice of frogs, often they have a taller exhibit with a vertical branch to climb on. Of course if the question had both options I would love to see both a halved and a quartered exhibit for frogs.

Well, quartered would still be 4m tall at least. Accoring to my magnificent concept art (viewed from the top down):

I tried to make them into cubes but it was like 5.30am and well...eh.

Should we also come up with some hypothetical new animals that could go into these new exhibit sizes? Or should we just focus on dividing up the animals we already have?

Large
Green iguana
Lesser Antillean iguana
Yellow anaconda
Goliath frog (these frogs are extremely vulnerable to killing themselves in smaller enclosures, where they jump headlong into glass walls when they are spooked - the bigger the exhibit the better)

Standard
Gila monster
Blue-tongued lizard
Boa constrictor
American bullfrog

Halved
Venomous snakes
Axolotl
Red-eyed tree frog

Quartered
All invertebrates
Poison frogs
Fire salamander
Danube crested newt

Walkthrough
All the current walkthrough exhibit species

There are plenty of wishlist threads for that. This thread is about what current animals would hypothetically go into what potential new exhibit sizes.

I really love our big exhibits and never fully understood your wants for smaller ones. It makes no sense for me.

I would only like to see bigger/combined ones for iguanas and large snakes or turtles.

Also if you really like you can always make them look smaller with some easy building tricks if you want to.

While I agree the majority of animals are fine like most the reptiles, trying to view insects and even the smaller aquatic reptiles in the current box size is rather difficult and wastes so much space when one tries to make an insect building. I think it's more of realism so we can recreate a real exhibit building with lots of varied exhibits to view but then the limitations of the exhibit roster comes into hand either way.

While i like big, nice display vivariums in zoos, 4x4x4m is pretty overkill for most of the species.
But my main complaint is that its really hard to build with these big boxes. Everywhere you try to integrate one you have to hide essentially a small room in your build.

Have you ever seen such big exhibits for arthropods, most of the amphibians and lizards? I have never and that's why I am also absolutely in favor of smaller exhibits.
I have seen a huge aquarium for axolotls, turtles or Titicaca frogs.

I would love to see such huge instalments for arthropods. That would be really cool instead of those small ‘prison’ installments you could see in most zoos.

In my opinion we should be happy that our animals have a lot of space but that’s just me. If you want it so bad I respect that.

I just feel that we live in the times where we need to understand that that animals in zoos are not displayed for us and our enjoyment and we don’t have to see them all the time.
Sometimes it’s really hard to watch some species in good zoos. I went to Prague zoo this summer to see Tasmanian devils and came 3 different times to finally see them. Same with Sifaka in LA zoo or Francois langurs in San Diego.

Titicaca frogs at Praha zoo probably the best example of huge exibit for very small animals.

Yeah, you can fake it, but still. It's like, you turn your bathroom into a habitat for 3 scorpions. How likely will you be able to see them? Scorpions don't need 15 SQ ft, they just need enough space to hide, roam a little, and eat/hunt

It's not that. It's that typically, you can't observe the animals, which is part of the whole zoo experience
