DK2 or wait?

I did quite extensive tests and the lag, fps loss, judder in resource extraction points is not related to CPU or GPU.
I can put 640 resolution and lowest settings and will experience the exactly same framerate as on 4k, ultra settings and 70% cpu clockrate.

It's a game engine issue which causes delays/waits during rendering that is not related to CPU or GPU power, it's either network performance or some other stuff that should not be done during frames.
They need to remove that pausing stuff from the rendering job and it should work fine.

Could be loading assets from disk. Even with SSD there's only so much bandwidth. I don't spend too much time at resource extraction sites. Does the judder get better over time when there? Or is it pretty consistent?

Let me put it this way - and it may help you (or not I suppose)

If my rift was broken (or stolen) and I couldn't replace on the insurance, I would order another in a heartbeat and pay again.

I would not wait until the CV1 comes out (which stands for "Circa noVember 1st", I think.... ;) )

Nosh.

Mate as youve gotten lots of useful advice here already ill keep mine to a min. The cockpit is amazing. You feel like your there. The pixels suck but not bad. Not to bad any way. Wait if you want but its worth it now.......... Kinda:) p.s. you really feel like your in there. My shoulders an hands the exact same location as irl. Kept wanting to move them.

For the record im satisfied with my rift.

It's a weird one for sure. If I go into the asteroid ring-based training missions on the Rift, I can play on ultra (auto detect chooses ultra for my pc) without any issues!

If I go to a RES in game, it's usually super smooth initially, but as soon as contacts start spawning it starts juddering. Changing the gfx settings to low, even putting the rift quality slider all the way down makes no difference. It can't be gpu to blame.

Such a shame, I know VR isn't a priority for Frontier, but I wish this could be addressed.

Some excellent advice in here guys :D

Personally I'm more than happy with my DK2 and will probably buy the CV but might hang back a little bit until I know final specs.

Great advice folks.

I took the plunge and ordered mine a couple days ago.
ED forums are probably the best source for actual rift usage, comments, and suggestions.
There is a Boat load of Rift details in the VR section of these forums.

If you can afford one though it is a great investment (even if only for six months) if you use it all the time. I have two and they've paid for themselves ten times over in terms of enjoyment derived from using them.

Exactly. I love my DK2 and even on my 2012 iMac with its 680M GFX. Yes it is not buttery smooth (especially in stations/asteroid/ring belts) but you do get used to it very quickly and it is damn fun!

Down the line I plan to buy the CV1 (or whatever) and even if the DK2 is then retired to loft, it has had a good life.

I've been demoing a couple of DK2s at the school where I work this past week and have had a few hundred students through the door...

Without exception they all asked where they could buy it from ...

"The coolest thing I've ever seen!"
"Oh my God it's like your there!"
"When can we come back?"

... When it works there's nothing like it! even the old headmaster took a sidewinder for a spin and said that " ...if kids spend this much time on computers now, how will they ever leave their bedrooms again?"

... I took that to mean he was impressed! :p

I'm probably getting one

I got to try out the demo at PAX South this past weekend and was blown away!

I had only ever tried the DK1 and hated the 'screen door' effect, and the DK2 has significantly improved on that! I never want to play E:D without an OR, so I'm probably going to buy the DK2. Granted, my PC may crap itself when I actually try it, I'll probably also have to get a new GPU (running a GTX580 now).

I figured I would upgrade to the CV1 when it releases this summer, then sell the DK2 online, since I'm sure a LOT more people will be seeking out the DevKits once the product officially hits the market.

Depends how much are you willing to wait. I read in some tech blog that release date might be pushed to 2016.

I tried the Rift for the first time after we got things set up at PAX South on Thursday.

Got a tad motion sickness (I fly like a bat out of hell anyway) the first time. We were on barstools, kinda wobbly, and my feet were on the stool's foot rest. After that, I put one foot on the ground and didn't have an issue.

I explained the Rift experience with this, "It's like watching a 3D movie from inside the 3D movie."

It actually felt like that asteroid was going to graze my head. :)

I expect the CV1 will be a very similar price to the DK2, however the GPU requirements may be such that they will give away a free DK2 when you buy 2 980s. The question you should be asking is can I afford the GPUs for the CV1.
My advise buy the DK2 and ebay it when the CV1 comes out and have fun .... some people love it... some people don't and thinks that graphics aren't crisp enough... I love it!
Just remember with the DK2 you are buying immersion not high fidelity graphics.

I went through 3 stages of DK2 ownership.

1st - Excitement - Researching, reading about it before getting it and then eagerly waiting for the thing to arrive in mail.

2nd - Disappointment/buying remorse - Realizing the graphics are not like what you are used to playing on a monitor, plus screen door effect and judder till you find the perfect balance of settings and peripherals (had to buy a gtx970).

3rd - Adjustment/realisation - Starting to stop seeing the screen door effect, graphics doesn't bother you that much because the immersion is worth it! And realizing that once you go Rift you most likely will not go back to playing on a monitor.

GET IT!

Just think, you will pay the price of at least 10 months of VR (when CV1 is released).
If you want full immersion in Elite YOU NEED IT!
