DK2 Video Request - Walking around Bridge...

So with a DK2 it is possible to get up out of your seat inside Elite, and walk around your ships bridge.

I haven't seen any videos of this yet - which is really surprising. So I either haven't noticed them, or none have been made.

It'd be great if someone could post a link to such a video. I'm sure it'd get a ton of views... :)

Technically you can't walk around yet. That is an expansion to the game that is planned for later.
Currently you can Only move your head... it can move further then physically possible though.
Sorry, don't have a Rift so no clip from me. I did have a DK2 session at FantastiCon though and I can tell you that standing up from your chair in a Sidewinder gets your head OUT of the ship. You look over your canopy into space. You can see the guns on the bulk of your ship and stuff. VERY awesome!

Yes it is, we've all done it. It's a bit tricky, as the cable from the headset to the PC is only about 2 meters, so if you're over 6ft, you're range of movement is only a few CM around you.

If this is possible... Shut-up-and-take-my-money.jpg

However I did find one of these while browsing http://elitegaming.org.uk/shop/GameCab/Cockpits which would work well with the Rift....

Sorry, not sure where you got this from, but it's just not possible, so who ever told you this was possible is wrong :)
I have a DK2 and your pilot is firmly fixed in the seat. You can look behind you though.

You won't be able to get up and walk around for a long, long time yet...they've talked about adding it into a future expansion.

Yes you can. You just physically stand up. Obviously you range of motion is limited but the camera coverage and the cable length, but it's definitely possible.

It's not possible at the moment. The first person perspective module (that's not an official name) will be release as a major expansion pack at some point in the future. Same goes for planetary landings. Not sure which of these two is going to be released first. There was no official info on this ye

Yes it is possible, as other said you are very limited by length of the cable, but it is possible and works amazing :)

Anyone with DK2 - you have to try it :)

BTW - i was trying it in Lakon 6 which has a quite big cockpit, so lots of place to walk on, I'm not sure if this works very well in smaller ships, will try after work

Are there any videos showing what the game looks like when walking around via Oculus? That video just shows the guy walking around in his room with the Oculus on, we can't see what he's seeing. Would just love to see the cockpits from another perspective...

EDIT:

Ah found this, not the same thing but gives a good taste of what the cockpits look like...

I walked around a bit on the bridge in my Type-9 in Beta 1. I haven't had time to grind up to any larger ships in Beta 2 however so I can't make a film of it right now sadly, but its pretty nice. Can only walk around in a 2x2 meter square behind the pilot chair.
I hope to get up there again in Beta 3 tho. :)

Nice to see so many different opinions on this one! (Most important ones, from those that have actually experienced doing it first hand!! :D )

I know it is possible to stand up and move around in a cockpit with a DK2 because I did this at EGX, and my head didn't leave the canopy. I was able to walk around in front on my seat perfectly well. Though I admit it is very odd to look down at the pilot seat and see a headless body sitting there.

What I was after is seeing some video of this on YouTube from other bridges... :)

I actually do that quite a lot - The camera is mounted way up and in front of me (2 m above ground, ~2 m in front of me), so my capture area is quite large. The cable is the most limiting factor, but you can move around quite a bit by recalibrating at extreme positions.

Unfortunately, my framerate drops to abysmal levels when enabling the second window view and recording, but maybe I'll upload a choppy vid to pass the time.

You can stand up and put your head through the canopy... Outside of the ship. Only tested it in the Sidey though, never thought to try any of the others.

Interestingly the ship itself is rendered on the outside, with relevant textures (but not skins) except behind the windows and the very back of the ship (which is a matt gray).

The trick is to have the camera set further back behind the monitor than you'd normally have it, Reset the Rift position and then to literally just stand up. Because the camera is further back, you're still within the 30 degree or so cone it counts movement within, so the movements are a little more extreme. I haven't recorded it though - I'll think about doing it with output to second monitor once B3 drops.

Thanks for this.

I must admit I didn't try to put my head through the canopy...but when I stood up the canopy was still a few inches above my head. But that maybe due to my height.

Some videos of walking around the bridges would be great to see. :)

You are indeed correct it is quite possible. It's quite fun to stand up and walk behind your seat. The biggest problem I have then is that I want to lean on it like you would in real life =)

I haven't made any videos of this myself. If I get chance I'll try and do one over the weekend.

Some of us that have done this feel that the cockpit scale is a little off in the DK2 at the moment. I for one would have to stoop to move about in a Cobra if it was actually the size it seems at the moment, and the door at the back of the cockpit appears to be about 5ft high at most.

I think I've come up with a way to semi-accurately measure things in game with the DK2, at the moment it's just a case of finding the time to do this properly before I submit any results. If a few of us do this and we get consistent result then it'll be worth seeing if we can get the devs to verify wether or not our measurements tie in with the modelled dimensions. If needed they can then tweak, but at this phase of things it's not really a big issue.

Here you go - the terrible judder and shakiness (no - I don't have Parkinsons, but thanks for asking ;)) only occur when I have the second window enabled and start recording - usually it's smooth as butter. Didn't bother cropping it, as it's terrible quality either way and just a proof of concept:

Ah - so you have a DK2 - (thought you only had a DK1 for some reason) - anyway - judging from the beautiful screenshots you uploaded, I assume your hardware is way more capable than mine, so you could do one that's actually watchable. Considering looking through the canopy - I can do that quite easily if I fully stand up (for reference: I'm 188 cm), but you could just recalibrate at a crouched position and stand up from there...

In the sidewinder I love sticking my head out "the sunroof" like I'm partying in a space-limo. Being able to look behind and all around with nothing in the way is great.

I prefer to reset orientation while squatting down and sitting far back. Then when I get up into position I have better visibility and don't clip through the player model. The viper has that terrible overhang that kills visibility, but not if you scoot up in the DK2. Plus being closer helps you read text.

I hope they don't nerf it like they did with trackIR, especially because restricting head movements in the Rift is a great way to make players sick, but mostly because it's just plain more fun.

No I only have a DK1. I used the DK2 at EGX, but only had a few minutes with it. Thanks for the video! Looks great - and is just what I was hoping to see. :)
