Do Covert Heist missions reset if the alarm is raised?

I just attempted yet another covert mission (ugh), and the alarm was raised. I refuse to massacre innocent employees in the name of night vision goggles (save lives! sell NV goggles in stores!), so I skedaddled.

I did see two red Xs next on the tracker as I left, but the mission in my trasanctions tab did not indicate it failed. I've done covert thefts, and they mark as failed in the transactions tab, but not this one.

Does it mean I can try again and the settlement will reset, and I can succeed, or would I be wasting my time? I do have a fine, but I can pay that.

Well I'll be damned, it reset! Same layout, same patterns, etc. Game changer!

And I was able to successfully hand it in :D

Seems there's now a bug with this mission twist. I can confirm alarms do not trigger a mission fail. I'd say this isn't a game changer though, it's obviously a bug and should be fixed.

But I guess now would be a good time to get your 10 heists in...

10? I thought it as 6 for Terra.

Looks like Terra now requires 6 Covert Thefts OR Heists, I thought it was both, good change! Just got her invitation.

I still can't do the covert missions. (sigh) I guess I'll just have to forget about the night vision upgrade

Here's the thing.
You don't have to be completely silent.
It takes a few seconds for anyone that sees you to call it in, so as cheesy as it may seem, you can just find yourself a nice corner (like the little single-room-with-closet hab buildings at some settlements) and blow away anyone that's in there, then just wait by the door for anyone who heard the shots to come in. The shotgun is a good choice for this kind of close-range ambush.

The alarms here aren't disabled, this is my view having turned around after leaving the building. You'll notice the corpses are all in doorways or otherwise having just stepped out of cover to find out what all those bang noises are.

A good time to blast them is when they get fixated on spotting a body on the ground and run over to investigate it. Now there's a pile of two bodies which is twice as interesting and even more compelling for them to run over and stare at it.

You need to find the right ones, that are not extremely difficult (difficulty varies) and get the six in. It can be frustrating trying to grind them. I managed to get the unlock the once and stopped doing those missions.

It might be possible to kill those that would notice you before the alarms go off, or switch off the alarm first.

Looks like there may be another reason to hit anarchy settlements.

A lot depends on settlement layout and patrol patterns of the NPCs.
Ones to EXT settlements tend to be easiest, often in warehouses with only civilians to bypass. Disabling alarms is possible though I would recommend hacking an unguarded console to start so you know exactly where the objective is, etc.
Don't forget to get the relevant NPCs passive scanned so you know where they are before taking the objective.

So does that mean it's possible to set up in the command centre where the alarm controls are located and just kill anyone that goes for the alarms?

Absolutely. They won't even try to turn the alarms back on. Blow away the guy by the alarm panel, turn off the alarms, then you're free to just kill anyone who comes to investigate the noise or else just leave the room. Hell, even if someone sees you on the way out you can just sprint around the back of a building and worry about them later - without the alarms going the NPCs have a hard time coordinating with each other - nobody else on the base will turn hostile just because that guy did, so you might even be able to ignore them once you're out of sight as long as their patrol route doesn't bring them in LOS of your heist container or your ship.

My favourite thing is picking people off using an unsilenced executioner at range from outside the settlement because if you're far away enough, they still won't hear the shot.

So if you don't have audio masking yet, you can still thin the numbers without a battle.

audiomasked L-6 is hilarious because they won't hear the shot but they will hear the kaboom, so you can basically just fire a rocket at a building on the other side of the settlement and send the guards on a wild goose chase.

Shield grenades are another good distraction tool - the noise will get them investigating but it's not actually a crime even if you land them directly on someone.

Heisting is my jam. First thing I do at a settlement is get to the alarms console with a series of identity thefts, it makes whatever else you have to do vastly more chill.

Terra was the most fun missions imo. Once you find the right settlement layout and figure out where to clone the security level you need, the rest is a cake walk. Just avoid the ones where the alarm console is 3 zones into an ag building. Keep hitting the same settlements over and over. It's always been 6 total, but they weren't registering properly once upon a time.
