I've seen some people actually claim that a lot of the things in this game are not considered a "grind".

Some people have said they know it is a grind and they LIKE the grind.

I want to see the cross section of the fans here of this game and see what % of you (corrected for these extremists perspective) actually DO enjoy grinding in games.

Example: Everquest - you could spend 30 - 40 hours of gameplay to get 1 bubble of XP. Thousands of people did it. They whined about it, they still played because there wasn't anything else. It was tedious as hell but there was so much variation in the game at least you could do things like crafting and other things to pass the time. But some people enjoyed it.

Do you enjoy the grind?

My definition of grinding is this: Doing repeated activities for very long periods of time without any different results - only for minimal gain.

Ummm why necessarily for "Minimal gain"? And could you please add a "If gameplay mechanics support it"? Since that'd be my vote

I consider a lot of the tasks for engineer material/commodity gathering grinding because they hold no challenge, they are just repetitive timesinks. E.g. driving around in an SRV to rocks again and again (some skill to learning the wavescanner patterns I suppose), mining X tonnes of ore, wandering aimlessly in SC till you find a USS and dropping in hoping it contains the correct item, etc.

You know there's going to be lots of "don't grind, play as you ever did and wait" responses though from the people who think you should blaze their trail instead of trying to get the engineering upgrades directly.

After very eventful days (parties, busy day at work) A -> B trading in ED is something I look forward too. The credit gain is noticeable and there are many adjustments to make to make each trip just that little bit faster. I get the same feeling speed solving rubiks cubes. Finding small changes in turn style or finding little tricks is just addicting and feels good when your times go down. Now if there was a boring day at work A -> B trading makes me feel restless and on those days I do other things like RES hunting or accept random missions. However I don't do A -> B trading with the idea of making credits in mind, its nice to see the balance go up but its not why I do trading. The moment I start grinding for with the idea of making bank I just don't like it anymore. Which to me is what the definition of grinding is. I'm not sure how to answer your question. I sometimes enjoy doing repeated activities, but I don't do it for the gain I do it because it just feels good after a busy day and because seeing optimizations work makes me feel like achieved something. Maybe its just an introvert thing. Not sure if that counts as grinding or not so I didn't participate in the poll

One of the basic draws to playing PC Games is the grind. It gives me things to do as I spend a lot of time alone. Having a pleasurable amount of tasks to perform helps me cope with being disabled, stuck in my home for hours on end. That is the real grind, I hope you never have to face it.

Just saying - some people do enjoy it. It put them into a trance like state - free from any thinking. Grinding is like driving your car .. sometimes you don't even know how you got from point A to point B because you were thinking about other things instead of paying attention to the road. Your subconscious was driving.

This sort of "escape" from your own mind into a dream fugue like state is addictive to some personalities.

So this is a legitimate question - DO you like to grind?

The poll is missing an option: I don't like to grind and I don't think that playing Elite Dangerous requires grinding.

Like the way you post on the forums?

Yeah like how the moderators like to watch me like a hawk for any single infraction you can pin to me? Oopps I may get banned for getting insulted by a moderator and stating a known fact in return ! Thats ok hasn't stopped me before.

I bring up valid points and I'm FARMING the rep for it. I must be saying something right for so many people to be repping me. It must be said. It must be heard. So far it hasn't been.

Very good analogy - the cube.. some people enjoy it. I like puzzles too.. but some of them are not fun. Like there is a 1000 piece puzzle thats ok.. but Elite dangerous is like doing a 10,000 piece puzzle.
