Do NOT get a "free" Steam key if you want to support Frontier

Give me an option to add an extra tip on top of whatever I buy. I'll consider throwing an extra dollar here or there. (Or hell, I was just fine with paying to have the key converted anyway.)

I appreciate Frontier for doing what they do, but at the same time when you say you aren't doing something, then change your mind, this is part of the impact.

+1 for this thread. I have the game, made in England, brought in England, all further DLC, models, books, badges and Onion Head t-shirts will be brought from Frontier and not MIDDLE-MEN like STEAM.......thank you very much Steam, for the people of the UK we don't your services here, we know where Cambridge is and we can use a computer too.
Now where are those die-cast models the money in my pocket is burning for so much, and more Onion-Head please.

Do we know if the ability to generate a Steam key from an FDev account is temporary?

I would like to link them, but I can wait a few months (so FD gets a few more paintjob sales at 100%). However if the option of getting keys is going to expire, I'd like to get them before then (I've already purchased the game plus lots of paintjobs, plus merch)

Not even sure what steam adds?
Mostly the social aspect. I don't get Facebook or Twitter, but I suspect it's the same thing here.

If I stream via Steam, I'm not included or shown in the community area. Screenshots I make and publish aren't included in the community. They're separate, impossible to see unless you see ME specifically. The other half of it is now I don't have to remember where to get the installers. (Yes, I know it's easy to remember Frontier, but when you start having one game for each site, it becomes an issue.)

When they reach people like me who otherwise wouldn't even know the game exists... That 70% FD made is better than the 0% they would have made without Steam.

Yep. I bought the game through Steam and it was via Steam that I even knew the game even existed. Had it not been for Steam FD would not have received any money from me at all.

I admit I am not all that up to date on this issue, but didn't FD have to decide for themselves that their game be made available via Steam? If so, don't you think they made that decision on the basis of it being a net positive for their bottom line? Don't you think they've already modelled the impact of existing users getting Steam keys and decided to go ahead with this anyway?

It's post like this that show a complete lack of understanding of the situation.

No one is denying that Elite: Dangerous on Steam is a good thing (as far as I can tell). ED should have been on Steam from day one, and your right for the majority of sales it's made it's better for Frontier to get 70% than 0%.

But in this case, for example from me, Frontier get 100% of the money I give them. If I claim a steam key, then then the implication is (because there is no binary yes/no answer and Ed or Michael should really shut this one down ASAP - but I'm afraid it's the usual Frontier Confudlement of just not being straight with everyone) that Frontier will only ever get 70% from me in the future and that Valve will get 30% for essentially doing nothing (I'm aware they provide a CDN for content, but that's the only real benefit I see).

If I also claim a Steam key, that doesn't (as far as I know) count to overall sales on Steam, so it doesn't push it any higher up the rankings. The only benefit is I can leave a review - but the game already had a mostly glowing set of reviews anyway, so adds nothing from me.

Instead I have to always launch Steam every time I want to play the game, and give (potentially) 30% less money to Frontier.

No thanks to that.

Exactly this . If they didn't deem it a net benefit, it would not have happened. They have gained a lot of goodwill in the wider player base, and will retain more customers in future.

Not even sure what steam adds?

I've had steam since it first came out with the Half-Life series. I very much like it, for the most part.

The biggest benefit for me, is my games are available to me, anytime, anywhere, any PC and in most cases Mac. I just need an internet connection to login to my account and I've got access to everything I've ever purchased. It auto-updates, without having to launch the game (seems E: D may be an exception to this, not sure yet) and is a single interface for mods, DLC, forums, friends. Saves your games to the cloud as a backup automatically (so you also have them anywhere you go as well). They also often bundle games together and offer good deals (bought the entire Civilization series for $50 at one point); have over 30 titles on it. They advertise well, many games I'd never hear of without it. Same as Elite; I never even heard of Elite until the Steam launch. Didn't even know it was going to exist - had only heard of that other 'SC' game that is coming out.

The only single negative I can think of, is as of right now, you cannot sell games you no longer want. So in my lifetime of using steam, I've missed out on maybe $500 in used games sales over 10+ years.... not worried about that.

go in to the main file and find EDLaunch.exe ;) and then you can use steam when you want your welcome

Admittedly, the argument is NOT for people who didn't hear of Elite prior. This argument is for/against people who were early backers in Kickstarter and/or Beta.

Yep. That's how I feel about Steam too. When Steam first started, I was extremely sceptical about it because it was a new way to deliver games; before Steam I had always purchased physical copies of games because that was just how it was done back in the day. So at first I was negative on Steam. But I tried it out anyway and I've come to greatly appreciate it for the reasons you mention. I've never had one negative issue with Steam, ever.

Gladly linked my account to steam, FD already got my funds.
While steam take a 30% cut, they aren't just getting free money. That cut goes to finance the servers that distribute the game and updates.
Any one that knows when power play is released FD's server for most of us will crawl to a halt that don't have high speed broadband.
Steam on the other hand have the backbone in place to handle the massive bandwidth to service the many users that will be downloading I'm guessing a 2GB update.

Then I still don't see the point of adding it to Steam...

for me i use steam every day so having it on steam is better for me also can track my game time and in the end it will come down to ppl like me and you one who dont often use steam VS ones like me

Let's just hope the update is pushed via Steam's CDN not just Frontier's network. I'm sitting at less than 2MB/s right now (downloading the beta), I should be sitting at closer to 7MB/s.
