Do NOT get a "free" Steam key if you want to support Frontier

If I link my account, generated and activated a Steam key (but not intsalled), but have since un-linked my account will that prevent Steam for taking a cut?

It was refreshing to me that I was able to purchase this phenomenal game without Steam, a blood sucking ass, monopolistic middle man entity that its evolved to.

This is such a strange thread. FD can make whatever deals they like with 3rd parties, and/or sales agents. It's beyond our control and we have to assume FD are happy with the deal, otherwise they would not have signed the contract. Furthermore, you have no idea on the terms and conditions - it would not be unfeasible that FD get better terms if they sell more keys - in which case not getting a steam key would do exact opposite of support FD. Without knowing the terms and conditions, all we can know is that FD and Steam have come to an agreement that benefits them both. If you prefer to play through steam, get a steam key and don't feel guilty. If you don't like steam, don't. I personally will not be playing ED through steam, for the simple reason that I prefer to keep things uncomplicated.

Huh, I had no idea. I wish business practices like this were more publicly exposed in general, to give more options to the consumer. I did get a Steam key when it became available, but only because I have most of my games there. The thing is I've never even actually played ED on Steam, since the standalone launcher works fine and I was too lazy to re-install. Oh well, can't revoke it now can I xD.

If it bothers you that much, just unlink it in the same place on your Frontier account page that you linked it.

Thanks for the info, which i'd known earlier but will unlink right away. Steam get's enough from me via other channels. I mainly buy paintjobs and bobbleheads to support FD.

This should be sticky.

Not getting a steam key for this exact reason. Screw valve, they don't earn the 30% they charge

I think steam is a good thing... and if the dev was really worried about it they could have never put it on steam to being with. The amount of people on steam and the visibility this give to the game, also there has been a couple weeks that steam listed it as it top seller over many AAA games. I think there has been a bunch of people that would never have been exposed too the game if it was never on steam. I think the visibility is worth the % that steam takes.. I am sure FD feels the same way or they would never put it on steam to being with. IMO

The problem here is that a LOT of players wanted it to be available on Steam, and to have free Steam keys. Probably due to an NDA (None Disclosure Agreement) FD cannot explain how the agreement works, or how much Steam charge them for the privilege of being on the Steam system. I have not (and will not) get a Steam key, as I want my money to go fully to the supplier. As it stands (and from what little I have managed to pick up) Steam will take a cut of money paid to FD by those people who have got a Steam key for Elite Dangerous, regardless of whether they or FD provided it. I do not object to a distributer taking a cut if they are involved in the supply process, but I STRONGLY object to them taking a cut even when they are not involved.

Personally, not linking anything with Steam unless absolutely necessary. Which in ED's case, isn't going to ever happen.
