Newcomer / Intro Do planets speed you up?

When I am slowing my supercruise nearing a station, all of a sudden my slow-down seems to speed up - is this gravitational? Or just me being a big dafty-trousers?

Also, is there a cancel target key? 'T' just seems to cycle through targets.

Thanks guys!

look at your speed, not the position of your throttle and you will see you are slowing down not speeding up. the apparent speed up is caused by your ship trying to slow down from too high a speed and not succeeding. to avoid the issue try slowing down to 75% throttle (middle of the blue zone) when you are 8-10 seconds out.

You want to try some fancy flying to stations? Go to LHS 1914! There are about 5 stations and I think 3 planets just about touching each other. Trying to lock onto the station in SC is amazingly difficult.

There's no gravity, proximity to planets/stars slowes you down, and so does proximity to nav beacon or USS. It doesnt speed you up.

I think you will be noticing an increase of speed as you leave the gravity well of the planet which is close to a station. You only speed up because the planet slowed you down in the first place - its the gravitational pull of the planet lessening as you get further from it. Map a key to 75% throttle and hit that when you get to 0.07 secs to (any) target. If you keep your throttle at 75% you won't overshoot, even if you speed up pulling away from a planet.

It's just so inconsiderate of these station builders to build all their stations so close to planets...

I have to beg to differ on this... at least for me, if I'm not paying attention and keep my speed too high as I'm approaching my destination, and I get the "SLOW DOWN" message, I will drop my throttle to zero and my ship will not only not slow down, but it will accelerate. That 's one of the most annoying things about supercruise.... I get it if there isn't time to slow down and I overshoot, but it at least shouldn't accelerate.

to repeat my post above: look at your speed, not the position of the throttle and you will see you are slowing down, as straha20 said above its like downshifting in a car with a manual transmission, you slow down but your rev's increase.

+1 for dafty-trousers.

Little confused about what the RPMs of your car's engine correspond to in the game. Do you just mean the sound of the engine?

that's it exactly, although your throttle going of the scale could be considered the in game version of high engine rev's when you downshift.

Guess I'll have to double check this later ... but it sure looks, sounds, and feels like i'm accelerating... my throttle position goes to zero, but the lights that show how fast i'm going go up.. .and they don't just suddenly shoot to max and start coming down like might be expected from your "downshifting" analogy.... they slowly increase. I'll take a closer look, but they should change how that is represented if that is the case because it sure feels like acceleration when you're playing the game.

Oh fair. Engine braking!

It's funny in an Adder because it sounds like a robot complaining.

Am I on your ignore list or why do you ignore my post #12?
Who are you addressing this to, and how do you feel your post has been ignored?

Speed works different in space, without gravitational pull your engine will keep accelerating you even if you're decreasing throttle. The reason your engine sounds like it's accelerating is because the planet is pulling your ship towards itself which results in your engine having to power up for compensation, however, this will still result in slowing down.

To me it seems like that as your mass increases, so does the inertial strain on the ship. In other words, as you get closer to an object, you are affected more by it --- or more precisely, by its gravity. So it's kind of like going into a turn. It doesn't matter that you're slowing down if you're in the middle of a turn: if you're going faster than physics will allow for you to maintain your intended course, you're going too fast. So even if your speedometer says you're slowing down in the absolute sense, you may be actually speeding up, in the relative sense. Anyone who has approached a hairpin turn at too great a velocity has experienced this as they decelerated: even though the vehicle is slowing the vehicle is still 'going too fast' as the bend in the road becomes more extreme.

That's how I envision it, anyway. :p
