Why do we ALWAYS have to kill each other????
We don't. My first point in my first post in this thread didn't specifically mention shooting anyone - it mentioned "find X" and "rescue Y" type missions. The second point mentioned shooting stuff. Games like the original Deus Ex allowed you to play through the whole shebang without killing a single opponent.
Besides, given the architecture of the game and the size of populated space, I suspect it would be you (and maybe a friend) against bots 99% of the time, although PvP would be fun.
If we walk around can't we simply have meeting places where we can go to talk to others, discuss new trade routes, tactics, in-game stuff. Do we always have to kill each other? C'mon.. there's enough fps games out there without adding to them.
Yeah - I agree. I think when the majority of pro-ship/station walking are talking about it, they mean just the walking and not the shooting. Maybe in the far future, but all the majority wants is just the ability to walk around, that's all. And I understand some people ask why - what point would it serve? Again, atmosphere and the feeling of ownership.
We already have tools for that and all the political dealings (Teamspeak, Reddit, these forums and individual clan websites). I see no reason why people would do it in-game. Again, it adds little to the game to be able to walk around your ship and/or the station and go to Quark's. As others have pointed out, it would be cool once or twice, and then people would start to complain that there's nothing to do. And they'd be right. It would only add to the amount of time it takes to get a mission.
If drinking on your own in a busy bar is boring, think how dull
virtual drinking on your own would be. In other words, if FD don't include significant additions to the gameplay experience with properly-focussed content, they shouldn't bother with "walking around" at all.
My idea was getting a specific high pay out mission to do a 'hot' landing on a moon base as a *gasp* Federal drop ship. Where players are making up a special ops unit that would sit in your federal drop ship until you land to go fight their way into a medium security moon base to collect intel, as a pilot or two would be dog fighting in atmosphere while another ship could be providing some ground support while avoiding some anti air fire. Also new modules like smoke canisters for support for the troops. Do a hot pick up a bit outside the base and bounce. Just to find out it could be a set up all in all. Kind of like Planet Side 2 game play tacked onto ED but with credits instead of some silly call of duty point carrot on a stick.
That would be fun.
Absolutely - CoD doesn't appeal to me either (and yes, I have played it!) Any FPS add-on would need to take a different tack and would need to add to the game. An arena-type shooter would not be that much fun for me as it wouldn't be sufficiently different from other shooters (and FD don't have background in FPS arena games, so I suspect they wouldn't do it as well as other developers.) This is why I'm suggesting that there be a tight focus to any first-person element to the game. "Just walking around" was tried in EVE and it failed really hard. Focussed, objective-led gameplay such as you describe would work, and the physics model of the game already supports that kind of mission. It would also give players a reason (if they needed one) to use the smaller ships again - I can't imagine a Python being much use for close air support. Aerodynamic shapes like the Eagle would be
much more useful provided the body had an atmosphere.
