Do you really want to wander around a base station?

Yes, if it has meaning. Like in EVE I would love to sit at a bar or trade hub buying and selling goods coming in and out the station. Or stopping to get a hair a hair cut or a shave before taking on more jobs to earn credits to do the same thing again.

Okay, but it's open to debate whether getting a haircut and shave is meaningful.

The more I think about it, I don't want to walk around stations, I don't want a 1/2assed FPS bolt-on where NPC's talk about arrows to the knee, and you go buy info from the bartender which ends up being the same old missions.

Now walking around my ships, including all decks, tubes, cargo bays, observation decks, etc., just for fun? Oh yeah.

Walking around ships? Sure that could be fun. Even leaving your ship to salvage would be cool. I doubt that I would utilize any sort of actual fps stuff though. Using an x55 kind of a pain to have to move that out of the way to use a keyboard and mouse to shoot people. I guess if you already play with a keyboard and mouse the transition to go from flying your ship to playing space COD would be more seamless buy ultimately probably wouldn't get utilized much.

Walking around doesn't mean the same as fps, if we do get to walk around stations etc. I hope its weaponless. I have no interest in CoD in space.
Then we agree - CoD is far too "twitchy" for my tastes; I hope it's not CoD in space.

Weaponless walking around would be super boring though; there would be literally nothing to do but walk around. I see no need for having to walk around the station if it's basically elaborating a function that can be achieved with a menu and making it take longer. It would be a slightly prettier version of the current signal source mechanic, which is itself super boring.

No FP module unless it's an FPS module. Like Powerplay, you could ignore it if you don't like it.

*edit*

I would also reiterate that it would need to be meaningful; i.e. you only get the pewpew component of it in certain situations. For example, if you are participating in a (civil) war at the moment, the fighting just stops and the station changes hands (or doesn't). A multi-objective mission component could involve breaching the dock defenses so the dropships could land - taking out those really powerful lasers, for example, then spawning into a "body" and securing the dock. This would be followed by several objectives, such as taking the dock access control stations and working your way to the control centre. Look at example of the rush game mode in Battlefield Bad Company 2, BF3 or BF4. It would be hard to do, but it could be awesome if done well.

I can maybe see some kind of walking around station and planet, but doubt FPS when flying ship is likely. Walking is as far as I know additional paid content if it ever happens, so would probably be in a separate 'instance' to your normal game so likely only available when you are docked anyway. The other issue I can't see how you would get around for FPS gameplay is how you would deal with the controls. Would you have to use KB and mouse/gamepad for walking sections, because HOTAS would not be remotely usable in any kind of fast paced moving environment in comparison.

Haha I can't imagine using the x55 throttle for forward and backward, hat for strafe and the joystick to aim. That would be a hot mess.

It would be kind of cool though being able to walk up to different NPCs in the hangar to take missions as an alternative to the bulletin board.

So I guess no one wants passport control for planetary landings

Yes, because it adds atmosphere to the game. Knowing you can freely do that whenever you want - for example maybe I want to watch a CZ from my Clipper's captains quarters while eating a hoagie. Or maybe I just want to sit in the engine room listening to the hum of the engine while smoking some green or drink a beer. Or just gaze out one of the port side windows staring at the stars.

It's atmosphere, and creates more of a feeling of ownership. That's the reason I want it.

It should be number one priority for FD to allow us to walk around the ship.

Only because I want to read the forum posts from people that turn on the DC, walk down to the cargo bay and then complain that they got destroyed because of a DC glitch.! :D

A "Fleet Managment" interface at the bar would be perfect. That way you could hire pilots to fly your vessels that are just sitting around accumulating virtual dust and earn credits. It should require ship maintenance, upkeep, paying staff, dealing with issues arising from owning such a business and even fleet management missions could be a possibility.

And we could call it Sim Space or Spaceship Tycoon or even just X

No thanks, I don't care for this or even for walking around a station. Do it once and you've seen and done everything, I'd sooner have some real content/actual space.

On Topic: I agree with the OP on everything except PP which I don't understand. Going senile can be fun!

I rather like the idea of being able to walk around outside of my ship and going for a walk on a station or maybe even a planet, i like exploring like that i guess.

I am also exited about the possibility of walking around on my ship, maybe even customizing some of the stuff inside.

After playing the three "Dead Space" games I wouldn't want to stay alone in a conda...

You are already alone in your Conda... and strapped to the chair.

The question is, are you REALLY alone?

Someone is going back to the good old Sidewinder.

They already ding you for illegal entry, blocking the pad, and speeding ... do you really think they will let you run around with a gun in the station ?

Why do we ALWAYS have to kill each other????

If we walk around can't we simply have meeting places where we can go to talk to others, discuss new trade routes, tactics, in-game stuff. Do we always have to kill each other? C'mon.. there's enough fps games out there without adding to them.

Yeah - I agree. I think when the majority of pro-ship/station walking are talking about it, they mean just the walking and not the shooting. Maybe in the far future, but all the majority wants is just the ability to walk around, that's all. And I understand some people ask why - what point would it serve? Again, atmosphere and the feeling of ownership.

I'd only really be interested in an FPS module in two ways:

1. if it were tied to missions - i.e. find the data crystal in an abandoned outpost; rescue NPCs from a station that has been attacked, etc.

2. objective-oriented fps shooting - attack and take the control room of an outpost/station with your clanmates.

Planetary landings would be the same - if I can get out of my ship and wander about, I want a clear reason to do so. Sitting in a virutal bar like Morn from DS9 won't cut it.

My idea was getting a specific high pay out mission to do a 'hot' landing on a moon base as a *gasp* Federal drop ship. Where players are making up a special ops unit that would sit in your federal drop ship until you land to go fight their way into a medium security moon base to collect intel, as a pilot or two would be dog fighting in atmosphere while another ship could be providing some ground support while avoiding some anti air fire. Also new modules like smoke canisters for support for the troops. Do a hot pick up a bit outside the base and bounce. Just to find out it could be a set up all in all. Kind of like Planet Side 2 game play tacked onto ED but with credits instead of some silly call of duty point carrot on a stick.

That would be fun.
