Elite / Frontier Do You Still Support Frontier? If So, Why?

Well, I may be in a minority on this forum, but I am of the opinion that X3TC is the closest we will get to the game Elite 4 should be / have been.

I certainly would never make a sweeping statement that everything other than one game in particular is "rubbish".

Hmm, maybe "rubbish" is putting it a bit strongly! :)

None of the games that I've tried measure up to the Elite & Frontier games though, and I do give them a fair old go (played Freelancer for a few weeks). Just not my cup of tea, I guess...

I don’t think the games come anywhere near the scope of the Elite series as they tend to focus on just one aspect of the game play ie trading. As I understand it, these games are made for the domestic German games market where this type of game is very popular.
I believe that there are several long running trading type games similar to the X series in Germany.

Firstly, they don't just focus on trading. The mantra that has been used ever since the first game is "Trade Fight Build Think" and those elements are of equal importance. The storyline missions are very much fighting orientated. And as for not coming anywhere close to scope of the Elite series ... in X3TC, there are over 300 sectors to explore, how many systems did you fly to in Elite or Frontier or First Encounters? Yes there may have been thousands or even millions ... but how many did you actually visit? I'd wager it was nowhere near 300. It's been nearly 4 years now, and I still have things in X3TC still not accomplished. It didn't take me 4 years to finish First Encounters.

Secondly, The games are not just popular in Germany, but actually have a following in several countries including America and Australia. The forum has sections for other languages (something I note Frontier have yet to embrace).

And lastly, I will defend Egosoft on here as much as I will defend Frontier on the Egosoft forum, but where as I may be the only fan of X3TC on here, there are actually several fans of Elite on the Egosoft forum.

It was pretty to a certain extent but it was also a broken non sensical bore fest. In my opinion anyway - it's one of those games I regret paying cash for.

I'm so glad you said "in my opinion".

That sounds like it would be a good name for a blog !
I just hope no-one else thought of it first ! :D

haha - Honestly though, things like jumping into a new system and having to come within a set distance of a space station for it to appear on the map??? It's a rediculous and pointless mechanic that just detracts from the game - it's the future for goodness sakes, these things are normally loaded into your ships navi, my Garmin would do a better job!!!

Steve, I understand what you mean, and to some extent I will even agree with you, but after playing the games (some for quite a long time) I have to say ... it really isn't that much of a hassle to do.

It is when you end up in a system that is full of 'nebulous dust'... then it just becomes frustrating. I'm sorry but nothing you say will make me change my opinion that it's full of stupid fleshing out mechanics that detract from getting on with the game.

I don't mind at all that you don't like the game, the world would be very boring if we all liked the same things.

I dunno, i think Frontier would have little choice if there were 6 billion members here asking them to make E4.

And we'd still be waiting 15+ years (btw, Frontier, that's a HINT ... No not a hint, a message that it's about goddam time you told us SOMETHING)

while there isn't anything out there wich is fresh released within 2010.
X3TC is older game, several patches old. While FPS games get something new every season of the year and even something to choose from.
Egosoft is working on what called there TNBT ? No clue what that will be.

I played from x2 and up. Those games are raw diamonds. unfinished. doesn't even reach any polish. Many flaws. But non releated to realism. As the mechanics are unreal. It isn't broken because it isn't realistic. But it's just broken because of less thought polish and feature complete and finished interfaces.
But it does something well because I played those games for a decent time.

Frontier and Elite I don't know.
Also a closer competitor before X3TC would be
Derek Smart Universal Combat. Wich is still fresher then frontier stuf. The problem is I don't know that game well.
But it's capital ship in space and naval and fps hybrid. I think this is closer as a Elite clone. But also not perfect. But others might know this game a lot better.
Before that Freelancer a big retail game. Liked it.

Als if a publsiher comes here lookin for genre potentional. His/her consulsion would be the genre is dead. Because of those few dozen gamers discusing Elite frontier space games.
If the peson visit egosoft forums.
Oh it's alive but small.
Get the idea of niche market.

Egosoft forums are much larger visited by many X gamers. But compared to other genres small.

Of course Xseries is a older but fresh in the memory game While Elite and frontier are prehistoric acient games.

The industry is different and the market has new kind of generation of gamers.
And consoles and MMO are economical very interresting for game funding.

So My expectaion would be what ever the will make it will be so different.
If the find time and funding and backup to go for it.

I'm living in hope that a new, more advanced, "Frontier-spirited" game will be made... I don't really care if its Elite 4 or not. But I feel that Elite 4 is one plausible product that is worth to keep one half opened eye on IF there is any updates of it progress... If there is no updates about Elite 4 I focus on other, equal products.

No... I don't even know anything about their reputation...

If they are good games I would... For me it doesn't matter who it was that made it.

If it's a good game I will buy it... otherwise... why would I care. I only buy games I fell is good.

Pretty much sums up my stance as well.

I still maintain the view that Frontier should have released graphically updated versions of Frontier and First Encounters way before now, and channelled all the money they earned from it into Elite 4. If they'd done it around the year 2000 - 2002 they would have made some good money from it because there wasn't a decent space sim about at the time.

There still aren't any decent space sims now, but I think the iron has gone cold.

Why bother to make a cult game when there is more money to be made programming a disposable vacuous console hand gestured piece of trash, this is like asking Simon Cowell to compose a concept music album with some real depth and quality.

Is it time for us all to grow up and use computers for the real reason they were invented? (prono and fraud?) answers on a post card (if you remember what one is and how to work a pen) to the usual address:- swap shop bbc London.
:p

Just kidding, if you start holding your breath I bet it will be released just before you pass out (don't actually do this as its a stupid thing to do and you will pass out first.)

And one more interesting thing I found is that David is a member of these forums and if you look at his user CP it says and I quote "David Braben has not made any friends yet " I wonder why this would be?

Fifteen years, and still no Elite 4.
  • No announcement re: The Outsider
  • No announcement re: Elite 4
  • No info re: Elite 4
  • New (possibly space sim) game from Egosoft and even the guy behind Minecraft may do a space trading game
  • Frontier cannot even be bothered to tell us what the point of reading and posting on these forums is

So it begs the question : Do you still support Frontier? What is the point in supporting Frontier? If you do still support them, why?

I ask because I fail to see any reasons.
Frontier, feel free to tell us if we should keep waiting.
It arrived eventually
