Newcomer / Intro Docking for newbies is a nightmare (dev's U need to do something)

I never had any problems docking, only time something went wrong when I was leaving with my type 7 and another type 7 was entering the station.. well that was a 40 million credit explosion. Don't understand how is it so many people can't fly their ships, every single time there is some player randomly crashing around the station. And I'm flying with mouse...

Yeah, sorry, but docking really isn't that hard.

I did the tutorial, and nailed it second time around.
Since then, I've never had issues docking, it's pretty easy now.
The most frustrating thing is the whole 'alignment', sometime I think FD are trolling us.

i find docking incredibly easy
only thing that annoys me is not being able to dock from any angle.

i found docking in elite easy aswell, although i took more than a single try to get it down.

Docking/landing is a doddle!! Speed in through letter box.... barrel role, locate landing pad.... speed over it, land! Doddle! Booger!!! Remember landing gear!! :)

I do wonder (if we get some humongous ships) how will I get in through the letter box??

I would imagine nothing above a frigate (Anaconda is a frigate right?) won't be able to dock inside a station, so that leaves either docking outside the bigger station or using smaller ships that are able to dock inside a station and bigger ships to resupply (X series style).

Played every version of Elite, docking in this version is a lot easier than it originally was.
Make sure you know your controls and have them sensibly mapped and then go and practice...

No offence but it takes 10 seconds to land. I don`t get it ppl you want everything to be auto done and you to eat something in meantime ? Learn to play and stop complaining every time about everithing...that is too easy...that is too hard. If you will watch a dcs world landing video you will burn you`r PC.

I'm new to ED, (an old hand at other elites) And yes the docking is a bit tricky to start with.

A very steep learning curve in fact, but try this method.

Learn where your controls are mapped to, and go very slowly.
Watching a youtube vid of someone docking in 20 seconds flat while you're still trying to find the docking request button aint fun
Move slowly... thrust the ship and see how it reacts.

Bill

PS works in KSP too oh no I mentioned KSP

I am very proud of this community in that most of the responses to the OP are constructive and genuine attempts to help.... good people!

I was one of those penniless/aimless/harmless types who had a real hard time confirming docking outside. Then one day I read a post saying, "turn and face the spinning radar" and just like that all my worries/hassles disappeared.

Do you get a similar device to the docking computer, but for automating launch to, instead of manually having to take it out the station ?

Well there is nothing we can do to help op, there are enough videos and guides explaining this, not to mention built in tutorial mission. It's not like we can land his ship for him.

Like an auto-pilot?? Now that would be radical!! you could get one of your friends to come around and play it for you ;)

hehe ye I know its been a bit lazy, but yesterday I lost my load cause I smashed into the station as I was going out, was getting a little to confident I think !

Pretty much the same thing, no idea how it could be so hard. Doing the supercruise and hyperspace was tougher, had to check the youtube tutorial for that the first time around.

Just had the same problem. But now I know what the problem is.

It's caused by player controlled ships being too close to the pad you've been allocated. In my case, a sidewinder about 500m from the pad.

It caused the orange pad number box to disappear, then stopped the schematic from appearing. Took two attempts to get down, but I did it. Lining up on the centre line is easy. The lateral line isn't.

Until the bug is fixed, we could do with a message to people who've been refused docking permission to keep at least 3km away from the station. Actually, that's good etiquette anyway.

EDIT: Created a ticket.

In the original game you could (eventually) buy docking computers. The two Frontier incarnations in the 90's had an autopilot as a standard ship upgrade, although it was possible to fly without using it.

Having not yet played this latest version of Elite, I don't know what's available this time.

Is there a similar autopilot system to the Frontier games in Elite Dangerous? If so, doesn't this handle docking and launching procedures?

You can buy a docking computer for 4,500cr. I've never seen the need for it so I haven't tried this myself - no idea how accurate it is. I've heard mixed responses.

I'm not an expert or anything, but I found both the landing and the takeoff amazingly easy. I got them both right in the first attempt with nary an issue, and I never ever *ever* took more than two minutes to dock anywhere (first try included). I usually just go max speed until the place, do a swoping stop, and land down with maybe one or two taps on a lateral thruster.

I'm not saying this as if it is something amazing, I am simply pointing out that the author's issue with this landing is *very* particular. People skills are all across the board. I myself would prefer a more complicated landing procedure!
