Newcomer / Intro Docking request denied on an Outpost, solo mode..?

I am getting this on an outpost, on solo mode. I didn't even know it was possible out of open mode. There is a commander on open mode occupying the middle pod, but on solo mode i don't think i've ever been denied access before? Anyone had that happen? I am neutral with the controlling faction, flying a python... Could it be a bug persisting from the open mode, or does it happen?

I relogged, closed the game, same problem. Playing Horizons. FInally i did dock using the Vanilla game.

You must not have done much operating at outposts as this is a very common occurrence, particularly if you are in a medium ship. Maybe you have always used small pad ships when at outposts?

There was an occasional glitch where an NPC ship had got stuck, I thought that had been fixed ages ago though.

BTW - pad-hogging ships can be "persuaded" to move-on by judicious use of a small pulse laser. ;)

(Edited for a typo - who knew that "pule" was in the spellchecker's dictionary - weird. )

As been said already - it happens all the time

The trick to minimize the chances for this to happen is to make sure you dont waste any time when dropping at that outpost.
So:
  • exit from supercruise at the outpost
  • immediately boost towards the outpost
  • watch the distance indicator and as soon it reaches 7.5km request docking - it is better to already have open the nav panel > contacts and watch the distance with the panel open and the cursor ready on Docking Request button

I noticed that if i'm slacking and delay the docking request, an NPC will request docking before i do and will occupy the only medium pad an outpost has.

Edit: this 👆 is specifically valid for Solo since the instance is generated and populated with NPC the moment you drop at the Outpost
In Open, the instance might be already generated by another commander (if any) so you might find the pad already blocked by an NPC no matter how much you hurry to request docking - in which case you do need to close in to the outpost till you can target the NPC blocking the pad, wait and watch the NPC leaving so you can request docking

Pretty much exactly this, im nearly always in solo mode and it can get frustrating at times, for me it seems to be those pesky Pythons, they are like the ED equivalent of Audi's who always try to cut in front of my truck on the M25!

With an outpost, you can usually target ships sitting in the hangar and/or on the landing pad to determine if it is an NPC or a human clogging up the works. If it is an NPC, they might leave after a few minutes (or not) but human players sometimes like to clog landing pads, just to be d1cks.

Your quickest option is to switch to SOLO, then switch back to OPEN once in the hangar. o7

Good suggestion for open (had to do this att he Pride of Bitterwood during the last cg but op plays in solo.

If an NPC is hogging a landing pad ask for landing permission twice (and get permission denied twice). After the second 'permission dienied' the NPC wil nearly always start its departure procedure and will clear the pad within a minute or so.

To be fair they just might be doing it out of ignorance, a surprising number of players are under the impression that if you enter the hanger you have freed up the pad, this isn't the case.

Can also happen at settlements. Be quick to request docking and you'll generally avoid it.

At least with settlements, if someone does steal the only pad available for you, you can just slam your ship down anywhere.

Is this true? I thought that once you went into the hanger and the landing pad went back to the surface, then it could be used by someone else.

Yes. You can target a ship in the hanger of a blocked pad to see.

If you look closely at what happens when you dock and enter the hanger, the pad you are on lowers spins and then is retracted into the hanger, if you look up a lightweight cover is slid up to cover the hole which retracts when you leave the hanger, if that cover was strong enough that a ship could land on it what would happen to that ship when you left the hanger. We always leave from the same hanger unless we change ships or leave the game to at least the main menu.

A mistaken assumption, you are not the first to think that. Community goal stations were often clogged due to people sitting in the hangar thinking they were out of the way.

As @aRJay says being in the hangar does not make the pad available to anyone else.

If you arrive at an outpost in a medium ship and get denied docking permission - target the ship in the hangar and watch for when it launches and the holo-display extinguishes, that is the point when you can get permission granted.

I recently arrived at a non-remarkable industrial outpost in my Python and had to wait for an NPC ship. Despite using tactics mentioned here (which I'm accustomed to doing), It simply would not leave. I waited and waited, even logging out and back (I was playing in Open). On top of that, the ship (remember: this is a Med pad)...

True to its name.

Logging out & then to Solo took care of it. I hadn't experienced that one before.

Nothing unusual.
If the small pads are stuffed, a small ship will get a medium pad. Or even a large pad if that's all there is

In EDO, while running missions, i play a DBX.
And once in a while, the game puts my ship on a medium pad or even a large one. And i picked the DBX specifically to minimize the hangar run.
Now imagine a DBX in the middle of a large pad... 😂
