Does anyone do mining?

I consider myself a miner first and foremost actually. Most of my current bank balance is as a result, although I do agree that the whole profession needs some more work to allow better scaling and more role specific ships/equipment to make it more than just something to do when you're not trading/bounty hunting.

I've said in a couple of other threads, predominantly it needs some kind of asteroid scanner as a utility leading to "hotspot" to highlight areas to mine which will give out higher yields. Maybe class 3/4 mining laser for bigger ships which also effect yield instead of just 1/2 which only increases the speed at which fragments are mined by a small percentage.

Quick question, do you have to go to RES site to find the good stuff? I have seen plenty of pristine sites whilst exploring. Why would anybody mine where other ships are located? Am a complete noob to this

Cheers

Nope. Just drop into the ring anywhere :) If the system is near inhabitanted space you will still see the odd ship

This is now the main thing I've not done yet. I might kit my asp up to go mining. Time to put my vulture back in the garage for a bit :).

While I cannot directly answer this, winging up a miner with a RES-hunter as protection sounds like an awful lot of fun to do with friends.

I tried mining, because I wanted to know how it worked.
What I warned about before it even was implemented turned out to be true: Too much emphasis on the scooping of rocks, which is completely uninteresting, or even downright boring, and too little emphasis on what could be really exiting: the prospecting mechanism. Searching for gold and other valuable ores is much cooler than scooping the rocks.

FD need to make the prospecting cool and interesting (Limit Theory has some cool ideas implemented) and at the same time needs to tune down the boring scooping part. They could implement Drones that can scoop up the ore for you. In the game Hardwar for example this worked great.

One ore scooping drone might take one cargo slot.
You might need a Drone controller fitted.
There could be drone controllers with different control ranges and capacities (1 drone, 2 or 3 drones).
Then you would have to buy the amount of drones your controller can handle.
There could be different types of drones, or you might buy upgrades for them.

I think this would add a cool new and rich mechanism to the game that would improve mining.
Drones might also be used for cargo scooping and other tasks.
Of course you would also still be able to scoop manually if you wanted too or needed too (if you can not afford the drones and the controller, or when a pirate destroyed your drones).

I am glad FD already recognized mining needs an overhaul.

I enjoyed scooping fragments up. it was fun and a relaxing thing to do. I don't see why everything has to be changed because some find it boring, personally I find combat and bounty hunting very boring but I don't moan about it or nag them to change it to suit me. I just leave combat alone and go mining.

You find ED combat boring? ... wow. You should try it in a rift.

I think drones are planned. Generic drones are even listed in the commodities market on the iPhone app as "unpurchasable" or something similar

I had a Hauler outfitted for Mining in a local system that would purchase the minerals, or have a lot of Supply missions.
You're certainly right bout enjoying the views; relaxing

Have plans for outfitting a Cobra to go out and propect some of the nearby unclaimed systems, but have been distracted.

I think there will be more a sense of Satisfaction in that, but it is a time thing at the moment

I play in the rift, the last week flying with guy's in wings has been awesome. Still I find it fairly boring shooting things in Res sites, SSS is a whole different story. Actually, the words boring and rift can never be used at the same time :) I could fly in a straight line in the rift and never get bored.. Still, exploring, trading is more 'enjoyable' for me, compared to shooting easy targets that keep spawning

I actually think that the game could do with a dedicated mining ship - enough weapons to see off pirates, a size 4 slot for the biggest refinery (10 bins), robotic arm or drones to collect the rock fragments, nimble enough to enable scooping, but not too twitchy on the controls.

To get going:

  • Cobra
  • Four bucket refinery (more is a waste)
  • x2 M / x2 L Mine Laser
    • (All - discovery, x2 L - popping those chunks)
  • Cruise for Platinum / Palladium
    • Only over 15%
    • Eject the rest

Hope you like luck, boredom and poverty.

For a brief time mining was cathartic but then it became so mind numbing I stopped. I mined in a Cobra since it offered good cargo space and protection at the time. Haven't tried it in a T6 or Asp yet.

I consider 5 bin the minimum. The fifth for junk so you don't have to keep ejecting. I guess it depends on if you include silver as a desired metal

My Asp is configured for defense, exploration and mining.

A couple of D2 beams / PDT / Chaff
A couple of railguns
A couple of mining lazers
DSS and ADS
Single 64t hold and refinery

Then, as I explore if I come across a ring I'll pop a couple of roids to see what's around and if it's not a top 3, then ignore and continue exploring...
