Does anyone know why there is no fleet management in the game?

It simply wouldn't work in Elite.
Its core network couldn't support it. Mainly because of instancing and P2P.
We cant have persistent NPCs for the same reason sadly.

That said I like how Elite now plays, really smoothly on my old PC.
Also that I get really nice fps, in none over populated instances.
Fill all that space up with NPCs and Player fleets and it will quickly become too laggy for many PC players and far too much for consoles.

Recently I went to a station that had a Fleet Carrier or Cap ship installation in the same instance as the Station.
with about Hmm.... 5 or so Cmdrs there too. Because of the Cmdrs being there the amount of NPCs being created got out of control.
There were about 60 or 70 Npcs. the radar was a mess of squares and the fps went from 140, that I normally get, to 15-25 fps.
It was very very laggy and stutter ridden.

So in conclusion I prefer the smooth game play with less NPCs, over the laggy mess caused by many NPCs.
I would like fleets or persistent npcs. I just know, or feel like, it would not work atm.

I highly doubt FD would add passive credit generation like that.

The best we might hope for i think is NPC wingmen that we can take on missions with us, either as hireable NPCs that fly their own ships or our crew that fly out other ships. But even then, I think the chances of that happening are about as low as Powerplay being made into an engaging and fun feature.

They already instituted this with bot scripting for powerplay afaik. Ok not FDev but someone did.

But seriously though, the concept of NPC interaction seems like a band-aid for the fact that so many people prefer to play in solo. In large groups or open, ideally you'd have real players who get things done, not NPCs. I agree though since I am a solo player myself, it would be nice to actually have a "crew" that makes a big ship feel like it's being used as a big ship. Instead you have one player flying something the size of a shopping mall just to pluck a space coffin from some wreckage.

AFAIK it was a very early design decision for various reasons I guess. One being ED would not be like eve. One person one ship, a near insignificant cog in the machine. Maybe room for a few heros and other notables.

We've reported this as an issue. Please feel free to add to it. :)

Personally I’m not a fan of afk credit generation, but I would like to see NPC capabilities expanded. I would like to be able to send them out to reposition one of my ships to another station I wasn’t currently at. It would also be nice for them to take the helm while I was at the gunner station in solo, and in multi crew so I could be a gunner or fly a fighter from my own ship.

Just on the issue of passive afk credit earning and the "it's not that kind of game" ... Fleet Carriers can earn passive credits.

AFAIK Trading, modules, ships, repairs/rearm, cartography...all can earn the owner credits whilst they are afk.

I'm sure in most cases the upkeep cost is far greater than the income but from what I've read it's quite possible to run a profitable FC.
