Does installation type affect performance in VR?

There are 3 ways to install and therefore run Elite Dangerous; standalone, Stream, and Oculus Home. Do any of these perform any differently than the others or are these all actually the same executable?

Recently we've found that if you want to take advantage of Oculus Dash in Elite (pinning virtual app windows within your cockpit while being able to see your cockpit) you need to install in Oculus Home. Aside from that, I don't think there are any big differences between the three.

The executable is the same. Some people have found that the performance of the Rift is slightly worse when using SteamVR, though I don't believe I've tried it myself. I can't remember anyone mentioning any difference between the FD launcher and Oculus Home/App from a performance point of view.

I've certainly never noticed any performance hit using the Elite launcher vs Oculus Home, so your right there. I wouldn't see any reason why launching the game via Steam would cause a performance hit either but can see a case for a potential performance hit if someone were to force the game to use SteamVR over the native Oculus runtime - Not that I can see any actual reason as to why someone would do that really.

As someone who uses or has used all 3 of those options i can hand on heart say i found no performance difference tween the 3.

Obviously there are other factors to consider in which one you use, but for me i found on major update time the main game launcher tends to be a quicker update than Steam, but have no experience on how quickly OR updates as i have only just started using this when Dash came out.

Thats a factor for me in my decision, it may not be for you!

Previously either BigScreen or Virtual Desktop (I forget which one now) was only available via SteamVR but yeah that's the only reason I can think of (other than "I want to access all my games via Steam" :)).

I think there is a little confusion regarding SteamVR and Steam. Steam is the store you can buy games and a platform to launch them from, SteamVR is the runtime Steam compatible headsets use (the Rift is among them). Choosing to run an app using SteamVR over your headsets native runtime would be a little silly unless you had no other option (ala fallout 4 or doom vfr) . Nothing wrong with launching an app via Steam though or the VR Home app on Steam (which uses SteamVR) , it should choose or allow you to choose, the most appropriate VR runtime for your device providing said app has support.
