Newcomer / Intro Does it make sense to get a Frame Shift Wake Scanner without Frame Shift Interdictor?

Still in Sidewinder so quite limited space for modules. Does it make sense to get a Frame Shift Wake Scanner, but not a Frame Shift Interdictor? What will happen? I can follow them, but not pull them out. So what exactly is that going to be like? I have to follow them, hoping that they drop out of supercruise and I somehow (how?) drop at the same location?

the wake scanner will enable you to drop out at the same location, that's part of the reason its there. the other one is too enable you to follow ships who hyperspace/SC away.

First things first.

We have two kinds of FSD wakes.
Low Energy FSD wakes (dropping into/out of Super Cruise)
High Energy FSD wakes (Frame Shift jump to another star/system)

You can drop at Low Energy FSD wakes without any kind of scanner, it is merely a "marker" that some guy dropped out right here and if you decide to do the same, you'll end up where he dropped out too.

The FSD Wake Scanner only shows you the destination so you can follow a target to another system by either targeting the wake, or manually selecting the system, be it via map or the NAV-Panel - but of course just targeting the wake is easier and quicker.

Does it makes sense to use the scanner without the interdictor? Well... yes and no.
you can follow miners (if they have a mining laser they probably are miners...) to their locations for whatever sinister reasons, so there are possibilites.
but of course, an interdictor is the perfect match for a wake scanner ;)

How? Two scenarios:
1. I'm in normal space. Maybe shooting a wanted criminal and he manages to jump into supercruise. How do I follow him?
2. I'm in supercruise. I spot a target and put myself behind him. If I don't have an interdictor, I need to follow him to his destination. If he hyperjumps, I need a wake scanner. Can I scan in supercruise or do I need to drop into normal space? And if he drops out of supercruise there should be low energy wake? I'm sorry, I have never seen one. I've only seen other ships supercruising around or USS.

1. You just go to super cruise as well, it is as simple as that. :D
2. Not necessarily. If you are behind him and see where he goes, you may stop (or throttle down to 30km/sec) and go through the celestial bodies in the left panel, target them. you may be lucky to find the one in the direction he was pointing at, so you know where he jumped. This is possible - but time consuming and annoying - and if he jumps again after reaching his destination, you wont witness that. Here a wake scanner is a life saver, obviously.
And yes, you can scan in super cruise.
Note that most people will go to super cruise to fly to a near celestial body of that same system. No one goes into super cruise to then jump to another system... well a noob who doesn't know better might do that, but it is pointless cause you can jump to another system straight away.

Yes, if he drops out from super cruise, there will be a white target on the radar. Depending on what he did (dropping out or jumping away), you'll find the according wake, even without a scanner.
Just keep looking, they are there.

Edit: Note that NPCs, at the moment, unfortunately ALWAYS jump to another system when they try to get away from you. This must be a bug or unfinished feature yet, cause it makes not much sense. They jump quicker than we can (assuming they go to super cruise) but leave high energy wakes... so to find these NPC's you will need a scanner for now I'm afraid.
