Does the game need to teach new players more?

The game is currently very unhelpful. I had to do a lot of research outside the game to figure things out. So yes, any improvement in that area would be good (as long as you can turn it off :) )

I've always thought of ED as being quite easy to pick up but then I was a vet of the previous games. Still, its got to be more accessible than the likes of EvE. That said, as its expanded over time there is a lot more to it and where I've gotten used to the features incrementally I can see how it might intimidate some particuarly at first.

Putting work into an improved in game tutorial system would come at the cost of actual content. Maybe Frontier could make some more tutorial videos instead..? Although, there are quite a lot of player created ones on youtube already.

I am curious though, how many people have read the game manual?

Coming at a lack of content as the cost in other areas may be nessesary. Tutorial videos are effectively worthless to hands-on learners like myself. When I first picked up Horizons, I basically winged planetary landing the first time because watching a video felt so unintuitive. Eventually I learned the horizons content playing with a friend.

Tutorial videos are not in the slightest a viable compromise, and I hate the fact that so many games use them to teach instead of properly integrate a tutorial of some kind.

The only solution I think is to make a tutorial with whatever you want to include and make it mandatory to complete before entering main game.
Condense it down to reasonable time frame and make it interesting. Cover all the basics.
To do that something will have to give, even if it's in game pop ups or whatever, it will need to be planned in with the rest of development.
A tutorial outside of teh main game should be the only safe space.

Yes.

First time I got interdicted, I had NO IDEA what was happening, or what to do about it. There was no prep for this situation in the online training videos ED links to in game. I got destroyed my first time out. In Solo. With no cargo. That's a real     moment!

I like to train from experience, the problem is nowadays everbody is too much of a rush, so yes, they probably do, but would they do them? probably not.

I passionately disagree with your form of argument.
Generalizing players who don't follow your playstyle as "in too much of a rush" and dismissing the probability of the following a properly incorporated tutorial is, frankly, coming off as dishonest and not pursuant to a constructive discussion.

I don't know you, and I won't judge you as a person on basis of one single comment. Just saying that labeling literally everyone else "the problem" is kind of ignorant.

Edit: I also learn best from experience. I also don't assume this is The One Perfect Way (TM).
