Does this game have epic fights?

Why do I have the feeling most people crying for epic fights come from a game where those same fights lasts 6-8 hours, played under extreme lag (Tidi). Players from each side essentially follow target broadcasted by an FC in a small window. Fights where your ship takes 15 minutes to lock on a target, take another 15 minutes for your turrets to start firing, then watch the enemy ship (represented by a logo - cause you don't really see where it is on the battle field) take another 15 minutes to die (ship logo flashes then disappears). Rince repeat for a few hours. When the battle is over and you start reading kill mails, you can only notice that you made an average of .25% damage on each ships you fired on. The rest of the damage was done by the rest of your team.

Yeah...truly epic fights those are!!

Yes, when you look at it alongside the likes of things like X-Wing and Tie Fighter there are epic battles.
These usually come in conflict zones which are in systems at war, where you will find a lot of ships fighting it out, large and small. In major conflict areas you can also find capital ships jumping in, which are huge.

They are good fun. Weakness right now is that they're often too balanced, which can make it "easier" than you'd expect in a single player game, because those are usually quite loaded against you. Also that they tend to be an endless conflict rather than a battle.

You will sometimes find moderate skirmishes in mining areas, nav beacons and the like. But generally, battles happen in systems that are at war. You will find some players who always fly around safe systems trading who tell you that the only combat is an occasional one on one pirate, or a 3 on 1 at a signal source. That's not true - it's just that battle fleets don't chase solo traders around the galaxy.

i seen some pretty awsome epic fails with newbie vs station. once we have a proper party system i the those conflitct zone will be a epic place to be for shure atm the npcs are to heavly tanked it cost more in ammo then killing them is worth.

You don't need to find somebody who has it as the launcher is here for demo purposes:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=71393

That's all nice and dandy, but the launcher asks me for credentials. After entering them I get "You don nat have access to Elite: Dangerous".
It would be wierd, if I could play this game just by downloading and running the launcher without buying it actually...

then you should get the re-released X- TvT games on GOG. Nothing comes close, 20 years later
I got X-Wing on floppies. Tie-Fighter on floppies as well as on CD-Rom since the second expansion Enemies of the Empire was only released on that CD-Rom. And I even have the Totally Games' X-Wing Collector Series which includes X-WIng 95 and Tie-Fighter 95. So yeah, no need to spend any more money on that. Besides, I want something new, which I don't know inside out.

Are there epic fights? I mean I guess that's somewhat subjective. The combat zones with the Capital ships can offer a "wow" feeling at first, but overall I wouldn't say the fights are epic. It also depends if you include player fights. Fighting another player is where the thrilling fights are to me.

There are some really cool moments you'll have happen to you just through playing the game, but nothing that really would feel like a Hollywood movie. Most combat will be 1 on 1 encounters. The NPCs are also predictable once you fight enough of them. However, as someone who earns every credit they have via Bounty Hunting, there is a good satisfaction I get from the kills.
The battles are like 30-50 ships max from what I've seen with a big ship sitting nearby or in the middle, you have no impact on it, it's just a never ending furball. That said it's pretty cool, but you can pretty easily tell from the amount of people trying to hype it up without actually saying what it is that it's not what you are looking for. It's pretty fun but the fights are more akin to a wwii flight simulator than epic space fights. It's no first person sins of a solar empire.
There are epic fights in the right places, but most of the action is 1v1 or between 3-4 people

Yeah, that's the overall impression i get. Even when watching the videos, two other users posted, didn't really impress me. The capital ships just seem to be sitting idle there and players just pick one fighter kill it and move to the next one.

What I mean by epic fights is, that you have to have the big picture of what's going on in that battle and apply tactics accordingly to win a fight, not just pick one fighter take it out and move on to the next fighter. Sometimes you should have to make it to the other side of the battlefield so you can protect a bigger ship etc.
Granted, in X-Wing or Tie-Fighter such huge battles have scripted encounters appearing all across the map with individual mission goals. And those missions are tailored for that type of ship you're flying. Lots of stuff is going on in such missions which keeps it very dynamic and intense.
I guess nothing is scripted in ED. So far, I'd rather not buy it, because currently it seems to be wasted money. But since I haven't played a nice space flight sim for ages, I'm quite eager to get anything to chew on :p Even if it is not exactly what I'm looking for ;)

There is no epic fights as most of the players, if you've been reading the forums here, will log out the second the see another player. Also, when the instances are locked to 32 players maximum, that's not epic.

This.
People like to hide in group mode or solo.

Had a total blast tonight. Sporadically gathered strike team and laid siege to a station. We killed every security vessel that station was able to deploy. And it was a lot. We were hammered from all sides non stop but still managed to prevail. I can't even describe how awesome it was :)

sounds great !!!
So what game was this then. ?

I have been in many many fights in "that game" with hundreds of players and never had the kind of "lag" you are talking about. Did those fights exist, yes but stop trying to make it out that they were all that way when in fact they weren't. Bloc wide fights with thousands of players on grid is pretty epic in comparison to Elite though. It is definitely more hardcore then what most Elite players are willing to put up with which is hilarious considering how many "don't dumb it down" arguments there are coming from some players on these forums. Most of them have no idea what hardcore really is.

Having said that...sometimes it's nice to step away from something that ridiculous and play Elite...which is what I am doing...I love EVE but after a couple years solid I needed a break and am enjoying Elite. It's not the same game and I would hope most people that play EVE wouldn't actually want Elite to become EVE2.0.

The best way to describe is like spawn camping in an MMO like WoW. Monsters (ships) have spawn points, the type of monster (ship) and it's frequency varies on the camp, and on occasion you might draw aggro from multiple monsters (ships) but typically it'll be one on one. Even in the capital ship fight instances and the high intensity conflict instances

Fighting for a refund a few months ago was a quite difficult, I won :)

You don't like the game, you got a refund, and you still post on the forums?

I can't really find the time to post on forums for a game I don't like and don't have, but it takes all sorts......

Maybe in the story led war zones there are epic fights with lots of ships but most of the time it is just you super cruising around or if you really look for it fighting one ship or sometimes two and not often three.

I think that at the moment, the "epic" moments come by chance, normally when you least expect them.

This is partially because Frontier have yet to really leverage the huge possibilities of either the "injected events" or multi-player in general (both of which are promised for the future), but above all because one thing they HAVE implemented pretty well is the cost of losing your ship.

Although you will only ever suffer roguelike "permadeath" if you do something REALLY stupid (and everyone does, at least once... ;)), the further you (choose to) advance up the spaceship ladder, the higher the costs and the greater the risks: you will constantly find yourself in dodgy situations where you *really* don't want to get blown up.

Fighting your way out against all odds (whether through sheer fire-power, awesome skill and cunning or pure terror-driven luck) provides some of the most fun, immersive and heart pounding moments I've ever experienced in a video game.

They make all the negative or incomplete aspects of the game (of which there are a fair number) more than worthwhile.

I certainly have had my fair share of epic battles but they have been one on one affairs generally which is how Elite/Frontier games usually have been and still are. You dont get into multiple battles unless you go to combat zones and then there are no tactics to speak of. I have heard it is on the list of things to add though - multiplayer flights and I am sure large complex battles with wingmen etc will follow at some point.

I don't own it by now, but I am thinking about it. But first I want to iron out a few things, which bug me, before I spend €49.99 and then be disappointed afterwards.
There is no demo, right? Nor I a demo planned, or is it? Because that would definitely be extremely helpful.

Anyway, I played the original game back in the days on my C64. Mosty just dogfights. But I didn't get very deep into it. What I really liked on my C64 was Space Rogue. Awesome game. Nevertheless, what really impressed me, was X-Wing and Tie-Fighter. Those were awesome, because you had thos really cool epic fights with huge capital ships and lots of small fighters in-between. This is something, I expect from a game with space flight.

Is there something like that? Or is it more like small skirmishes i.e. you vs. 3 pirates etc...

If not, is anything like that planned?

I have been in some epic fights. A few where at combat zones and some were in USS sites where multiple pirates had spawned on me.
