General / Off-Topic Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Being a father of three children, the following conversation, while fictitious, is perfectly plausible in my experience. It concerns an adult trying to explain to a child the rules of chess:

A: The pawn moves like so, see?

[shows three options for pawn. child moves pawn diagonally right across board]

C: And like this?

A: No, only one diagonal space when taking another piece.

[child picks up queen and bishop]

C: But these can move like that!

A: But they are different!

C: Can the rook jump like the knight?

A: No, only the knight can jump I'm afraid.

C: Oh! Why can't all the pieces move the same? It's not fair!

A: Tell you what, there's another game called draughts; all the pieces look the same and they can all do the same thing. Would you like to try that instead?

C: But I want chess to be like draughts.... Can we change the rules?

and so on...

Tom,

The bells are ringing oh so very loudly.

My friend, you have made my day. :D

Edit: Time to nerf the damn bells.

nice parable

sadly generalizing too much

and with too little parameters

many children can be master chess players

many children cant even butter their own slice of bread

doesn't make either of them stupid or whiny...

Many children don't bother with punctuation, either.

If you mean that this little dialogue, which is not a parable, has too few parameters, then perhaps it was too opaque for you? It is merely an observation on recurring, circular arguments which appear on these forums.

Never mind!

firstly English is not my native language and forums aren't essays

secondly an example of a life situation as a means to explain something ( bash ) on people is called a parable

thirdly hiding a message that is plain too see behind that dialogue with your children

doesn't take the fact away that your belittle other people that don't share your opinion but that is a another subject altogether
that i don't care to discuss on a gems forums

yes not all people have the capability to understand chess it doesn't mean that all people that understand it can play with equal skill either (hence too little parameters)

Listen, I think you have missed the point, but that's okay. Nothing is hidden, my message is very clear. This has nothing whatsoever to do with parameters, either related to chess or to Elite. Neither is it a parable, no matter whether you think it is or not.

On the one hand you chuck bold one liners out and then assert that you don't need to write an essay.

What I am pointing out is that it is a quintessentially childish trait to want to change the rules of a game to suit oneself. I am talking about infants here.

You may disagree and think Elite should be nerfed/buffed/balanced to suit you? Perhaps not, I really don't care either way.

What I would suggest to those who want to rewrite Elite: go away and make your own game, I'm sure it will sell millions.

EDIT: Hilariously, this has been moved off topic, as it clearly has nothing to do with games or gaming! Ahahahahahaha love it :D

For sure that would be an awesome game : Space draughts

Indeed. I can see the marketing already: "Elite: Space Draughts - Whoever gets to go first... WINS!"

For a those who like a bit of excitement, we could make one side look like noughts and the other side look like crosses. But we'd need to simplify it a bit for that to work ;)
