Downloading the Beta - Best time to begin

A couple of questions I think everyone would be interested in knowing the answers to:

1. When would be the best / optimal time to download the Beta this Thursday?

2. With all the downloads happening - what effect will it have on users who are playing the game at the time of release? i.e. are times for receiving miossion lists, etc. going to take longer?

3. I'm looking to download on Thursday but playing on Friday - what can I expect in regards to connection issues, i.e. unable to connect to transaction server, etc.

Thanks,

V2k.

1. Either when it releases (unknown time) or Friday.. Worst time is 6pm as thats when the US wakes up and the UK gets home from work/school. Other than that whenever, turning on the peer-peer download (Launcher - Options - Multi-threaded download) helps as once some people have the files they can distribute to others.

2. Download servers and play servers for beta are entirely separate from the base game, they just host more at Amazon. The only difference will be that the main servers will be emptier.

3. Who knows, betas are swings and misses. Some betas haven't worked smoothly for 3 days after launch, others were fine right out the gate. Last few have been really good but then again I feel like this one could be different being 3.0 changes and all I expect the initial rush to be high. Personally I'm looking at not trying it until Saturday but then again i've always been a patient one :)

There's no "best time" really, just get it downloaded and off you go :D

Mind you - some ISP's get really slow during peak hours and can put caps on certain types of traffic, and reroute you half-way across the world for lulz and saving a few pennies.

1. No difference - when it is released, off you go. If there's no strange issues with AWS connection for you, it will download just fine;
2. Usually there's no effect, beta servers are different bunch and doesn't affect live version;
3. Friday is ideal to play, because most biggest server issues will be solved on Thursday;

Generally speaking, the plan is always to spend beta day furiously pressing F5 on this forum, and read the tales of Commander Thrust from Bradford who has been playing the Beta since yesterday. As soon as they press the button then everybody piles in to try and be the second commander (remember Cmdr Thrust from Bradford) to get in the new beta. It is also traditional for someone to ask when it is ready every couple of minutes as this is scientifically proven to speed up all the database migrations and code compilations. We all have to do our part. Ready yourself commander, it will be a wild ride.

Thanks for the feedback folks - I booked Friday off work to play but looking to download late Thursday evening.

I usually just leave my Steam Client up and running on Wednesday night. It constantly checks your game collection for updates, so when FDeV posts the Beta, the Steam Client should start downloading it as an update.

I'm in California, so the ED updates tend to come up around 3 or 4 AM my time. Unless there is some kind of delay.

I did all betas. Simply put: downloads tend to be super slow upon release, servers crap out all the time. Do something else, and have the download running when you go to bed.

If I may - newbie question. If we participate in the beta, buy stuff, etc.. do we keep or lose it after beta? Thanks.

"What happens in beta, stays in beta."

First off - the beta is only open for PC players.

They've probably already taken a snapshot of everyone's game state ready to use on the beta servers, so it's likely to be a few days behind current progress.
You can do what you want in the beta game, even clear your save and restart (but be absolutely sure it's the beta game that you're logged into!!!) and when beta ends, the servers are shut-down.

You can continue playing the 'live' game as normal during the beta period, you don't have to log into the beta or even download it if you don't wish to.

Note that it'll generally require at least the same amount of installation space again as your current ED installation is using, but it should only download changed files and will take a local copy of anything that's the same.

HTH! o7

[edit] on the last two there have been special Community Goals to participate in that rewarded players with a decal. No news yet that there will be this time, but keep an eye out - these are the only benefits that would get carried over into the live game.
Ships and equipment are generally 1/10th the price too - so it can be a good opportunity to test a ship that you can't currently afford without the worry about splatting it!

that's right, separate instances - separate times normally too, the server may even be a week behind the live game.
I dropped a quick edit too as you replied... (there may or may not be a decal if they have a reason to run a community goal in beta to test something.)

We may have something up our sleeve for the slow download issues. :)

So betas are being hosted on Steam now too? ;)

Anyway, I've never had all that much issue with download betas and stability. A little bit here and there, but nothing for me to really worry about one way or the other.

The best time to begin downloading the beta is just after you post saying the "alternative download method" corrupted my download, switched to the normal method and it was fine.
Then use the alternative download method.
