Drip feed story telling, the only option?

I realised something reading through this thread. I never read Galnet whilst playing the game. I have tried a few times when docked at a station, but there is literally a mountain of it to scroll down through. And that's not really a good time to settle into reading. So, I just clicked away from it and that was that! Who knows if the information within it is useful or if you will find the specific thing you are searching for.

I read the forums instead, and that is when I can search for, and digest the information at leisure. To that end I really wish every star ship in the game was fitted with an on board computer data base. Where you can look information up such as places of interest (with galaxy map links) and learn the stuff that matters to you most when you want to know it. Playing in VR can be problematic when you want to say, visit an engineer, there is no real informative in game list of who does what. So one just sits there until you either decide to go get the info or bin the idea.

Flimley

Would be easier if it were well categorised and laid out.

It’s just not dynamic and there isn’t any feeling of interaction.

On the contrary: It *IS* dynamic precisely why you say it is not: It is managed and player response feeds back into it. Whereas the plot in a FPS is not at all dynamic: It is set in stone when the game is put onto the market.

I wonder if the goids are chagrined at the rate of progress too?

They are probably doing their own CGs. Each tier reduces the time it takes for them to adapt to this week's aegis weapon.

There are rumors that the multicannon adaptation CG was ruined by an unrully drone soldier called Ollohivemind who caused a lockdown to the system it was happening and they could only reach the "adapt in 2 months" tier.

Well, actually it's much better than it was. Now they even list the system names in the news, so you know where you can find the new stuff. And if you don't like reading forums/Reddit than you can find tonnes of players in those systems and just ask. It's still not perfect, but it's getting better. I like the direction. The only thing that I don't like is that they spent a lot of time in developing all the new great assets, modules and mechanics (also search and rescue) and made it not worth doing (yes, please make the alien materials count as more tonnes in CGs and rise the rewards for S&R).

Space Invaders 3D(tm). Linear Game Design straight from 40 years ago, just with improved Graphics and much better sounds.

Except back in Elite 84 I barely played it (compared to ED) and got pulled into Witchspace regularly.

I've had one hyperdiction.

One.

I would appreciate it if they gave system names more consistently. And planet names and coordinates where appropriate. The stories of the INRA bases are a perfect example of what NOT to do. Oh there's something on a planet in the Hermitage system. Great. Might as well have said nothing at all.

If it's already been plastered all over the forums and all over YouTube, you don't need to play coy with the exact locations of these things when you mention it in GalNet. It's not like you're giving away some big secret, all you'd be doing is accommodating those of us who prefer to play the game without consulting outside websites.

Agree. There can be altogether too much 'mystery'.

Buuuut, maybe that's to compensate for lack of game? I mean, I dunno.

Well the thing about that is, nobody (and I mean nobody) is ever going to get just the name of a system, and be able to find a planetary surface site on their own. It's not doable. So if you're not going to include the coords in Galnet, then you better have a good reason for leaving it out, like maybe there's a listening post in the system and if you decode it you can get the coords. But if there's not a trail to follow and "step 2" is "scour the entire surface of every planet in the system at low altitude until you find it." Well, no, that's not something someone can do. If you aren't going to include sufficient information to find the site, then you might as well not even mention that there's anything out there in the first place, because in order for us to see it, we're going to have to look it up online, in which case your GalNet article serves no purpose.

I guess they are conflicted between roleplaying (how many details would realistically be in a news article) and good gameplay. External independent sources will always be more spoilery than the authors. That's why I think they should introduce some independent pirate'y news feed for mystery hunters. "Yo! Check out the new cool site at XY the Feds don't want you to see! The truth is out there!" :)

Other than that I think they are just in love with the whole community research effort that requires external sources but so many of the Solo players don't like as a standard way of introducing new story content.

I'm all for having multiple news sources and investigating different conflicting reports and shadowy sources. But if FDev are not ready or able or interested to create all that additional content(and context); then they need to put planets and coordinates in the stories.

Considering they run stories about every CG and there's a button right in the newsfeed that you can click on to go straight to the system in the GalMap; I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that GalNet include planet names and coordinates in their stories.

I don't know why the content isn't joined in some story arc the player can dip in and out of. The closest thing to a story is watching YouTube of others following the hints off reddit and recording/editing the footage in a presentable sequence.

This is by far the best "worst" game I've ever played. It's extremely fun but at the same time boring because it's extreme tediousness. It's a conflicting feeling to be sure. The potential this game has is the only thing that keeps me playing it. That being said an actual narrative would make sense.(Everyone else does it.)
It's like reading a book without any words just chapter title's.

Well, actually, open sandbox games only seldom do it. Don't really now if can name any of them that did the story thing right.

But Fdev promised there will be some personal narrative experience in Beyond I guess.

Eve online had the exact same problems to overcome

It's a game. The narrative should be opt-out, not opt-in. But either way it should be reasonably accessible to make that call as a gamer. There are times when you happily want to naff off into a far flung system for some Arsenic hunting to get some upgrades, and then there are times you want to put that effort to what feels like meaningful use.

That's the space I'm in now. A load of time and effort getting a point I felt I needed to be in order to meaningfully participate, only to take a step back and ask '..in what?'
