Dromi (IOS) to Sothis w/ no fuel rod possible?

Hi, new here, and I just started playing Elite Dangerous.

I'm planning to travel from a system near Dromi to Sothis, which is around 107 jumps.

Today I travelled around 16, before needing to fuel; 91 jumps left

I realised I had no fuel rod, so couldn't get fuel from the stars.

I had to rely on getting fuel from outposts and stations on my route, which means going forward, I will have to fill up in controlled systems.

Do any of you think this is do-able, or am I wasting my time?

You mean fuel scoop?

You can get there only fuelling from stations but you will want to verify the system has a population first, to ensure there is even a chance of having a station. Will need to plan your route carefully.

If nothing else its a good exercise.

Also, if you run out of fuel and are stranded, log out immediately and go to https://fuelrats.com/

They will provide instructions and bring you fuel.

What is your ship and what's your jump range? 107 jumps from Dromi to Sothis way more than it should take. You may also be plotting in economical mode which would make you jump more than necessary. But a fuel scoop will be required, yes.

On the galaxy map route plotting tab you can select (down near bottom of left hand sidepane) fastest or economical routes fastest will pilot longer jumps
Filtering on the star map is from 3rd? Tab you can filter by population, economy etc, etc it is worth spending 10 mins messing around In there working it all out

fuel rats were great, got me back on my way, and i didn't die
And now you have experience with a very important group of players. Usually they are on-point in the bubble and for explorers way out in the black they make it a flat out mission to get there as fast as possible no matter where they are.

Even if it literally takes multiple real life days of in game play they will get it done.

Ok, Sothis to Dromi (or vice versa) is 543.39 ly (courtesy of http://edtools.ddns.net/dist.php). Most ships will struggle doing that without a scoop, economical routing or not. A stripped down Beluga with engineered FSD and a Guardian booster could do it with "fastest" routing. My Krait Mk.II would need one refuelling stop on "fastest", so should have no trouble on "economical" - besides the pilot going crazy.

But: 107 jumps for 543 ly? I would strongly suggest:
1) check the settings in your route planner. That looks like you've chosen "economical" plotting instead of "fastest"
2) if you do have "fastest" selected and still make these small jumps, get a better FSD. Yes, the stock FSD on a Sidewinder will only do 8 ly max. If you rebuild that Sidewinder for maximum jump range (without Engineering or Guardian stuff), you will get 24 ly jump range. If you include Engineering and Guardians (both are Horizons content, btw.) and want to max out your jump range (without any compromise - shields are for wussies :)), you can reach 44 ly per jump.

Buy a fuel scoop. And upgrade your FSD. 16 jumps sounds like you have more than one fuel tank. Take out the extra and fit the fuel scoop. Refueling in systems is slow and fraught with peril.

UPDATE: I got to Sothis!

After almost dying in 66 Andromedae, a fuel rat came and saved me, and gave me advice on how to navigate the galactic map (being as I'm new)

Realizing that there was nowhere further on my route to refill, and anticipating that I would be in the same perilous situation again, I decided drastically update my ship.

I went to a system called 'SAN' and bought the much-needed fuel scoop. There, I also brought an upgraded hyperdrive, thrusters, an extra fuel tank, and other necessities.

Back on my way, the traveling, navigating, and pleasantness of the journey was increased tenfold. Sure I flew close to stars sometimes and got a bit baked, but within an hour or so, I made 30+ jumps and finally arrived at Sothis; I docked at Newholm Station.

On my journey, with all the cartography data I had collected, I progressed to the rank of Scout... and then to Surveyor. I also made around 1.5 Mil credits.

This is probably not that much of an achievement to most of you, but for me, that has only been playing for less than a week, I'm proud I made it there, and thank you to everyone that gave me advice and helped me
