DROP IN GUY Question: How open are the Devs to a little bit of interface changing ?

Hi All,

I play in VR so taking the headset off to look at a monitor is a pain, and I find that the galaxy map is next to useless in VR. As it takes a while to boot, is ganky when moving around and for me is really frustrating to use.

Open panel.
Scroll to Galaxy Map.
Wait.
Look about, maybe have to change my filter.
Select a planet.
Back out of the panel.
Hit FSD.

Can I ask for a small code change please as you can make all that frustration history for every existing player and more importantly every new player that onboards.

When looking at the Nav Panel when you scroll down to the bottom any system that needs a Permit that line is shown in WHITE and not the normal Amber, so there is logic in there for changing of a systems colours depending on the type of system.

Is there any chance that one of the amazing Devs could spare an hour to add another IF statement please ?

If the system contains a refuelling star could someone change the little solar system icon at the start of the Info line to Green, not the entire line just the Solar System Image.

Scenario I'm currently ranked Elite Trader, Dangerous (at last) and Ranger, and I want to start mapping the verse jump by jump, I'm in my headset and I'm low on fuel.

If I scroll down to the bottom there's no useful info on systems, I would love to see some info on if it is a fuel star.

Quick look, select, jump in, ping map the area, refuel, jump out. Rinse Repeat as it would stream line the mechanic for me.

I will see what kind of reply’s I get to this post before I post any other tweaks, as the screen between my legs is next to useless and I have some good ideas (from my perspective) for retasking it.

Many thanks The Drop in Guy

It doesn't appear that they're open to making any improvements to the UI. Sometimes they might fix bugs but people have been complaining about the same stuff for a long time. They appear to basically have given up on VR entirely with Odyssey.

Cheers for the reply, I thought that ED was looking to expand its user base which is why we are getting more varied content and ships.

I won't even dare to ask if that stupid display between our legs can actually be made to be useful by displaying information about a targeted object or ship.

I mean anyone could use the above changes, as they wouldn't be VR specific.

Is there NO Dev that truely believes in and fights for the game anymore, if there is shout out ‘I am Spartacus’ in the break room.

It's been a little while since I played in VR, but I don't recall having any particular issues with the Galaxy Map. IIRC there are some specific graphics settings associated with it in the menus, so you might want to try turning those down to see if that improves your experience. The Nav Panel is much more geared to in-System travel than what you're looking for.

They've revised engineering twice, to the point where the spinny-wheels-of-random-progress (and almost everything else about the engineering UI) is are almost completely redundant, but the UI remains as it was back when the results of engineering were random.

I don't think FDev like to mess with the UI unless there's a really good reason for it.

I only use HOTAS when in game. so it's a to use.

And? I use HOSAS in VR too and never bother with the side panel unless I navigate locally. Got the maps on two buttons on my right base.
When I hit the Galaxy one it can take 3-4 seconds to open and I'm running a watercooled rig, lots of RAM great video card, and NVME drives. I've tried different installs, without the VR, different settings etc.

It's such a shame as the games damn great, physics aren't bad, the dice rolling side of things could do with some tweaking, and new ships are really nice.

It taking 3-4 seconds to open is pretty normal. It's loading a map of an entire galaxy in that time, and it's the No.1 stand-out feature of the game.

Take some time to mess with your Galaxy Map controller binds. If it feels bad to use, it's probably because you've set things up sub-optimally.

also the galaxy map is very demanding. I run a mix of Ultra and High VR settings, but needed to turn down the galaxy map to medium to make it work well. Set to medium, my galaxy map opens and is usable within less than 2 seconds from the button press, at least right now in the bubble. Might be longer near the galactic core.

As for the bindings, I am so used to navigating it via my HOSAS that I find it impossible and annoying to use mouse and/or keyboard.
  • move in-plane with the X and Y on the right stick
  • yaw the map with the right stick's twist
  • move up and down with the left stick's twist
  • zoom with the left stick's Y
  • galmap pitch is bound to the left stick's Y axis, but I never, ever use that

This is so ingraned in my muscle memory that it's a breeze to navigate. It's a matter of training of course. Hope this helps.

Oh for the record: Ryzen 9 5900X, 32 GB RAM, 3080 Ti, Reverb G2, VKB EVO normal on the right, OT on the left.

I will try the Medium settings on the galaxy map later on and see if that works many thanks, as tonight I'm shooting my nephews in the face with various weapons in Black Ops 6.

And for some reason when I do a system search and then try to select that system, it goes there qick enough, then move the stick a little bit to make sure it is selected, then button 19 long press to select..... and BOOM stupid thing goes to the next on the list, and it sucks balls very frustrating.

And because I've got a cockney speech impedimentI can't use voice controls as it labels me with the Scotts and ignores me or gets it completely wrong.

Even Siri is starting to take the mikey out of me, I have to retrain her at least once a month.

Whatever happened to things just worked :)

Have a great night all

Oh yeah, the little things you forget. Of course I type with the keyboard when doing a search, and the little nudge of the right stick when focusing on a search result is totally instictive for me at this point, so much I forgot about it.

Also... cockney is now a speech impediment? :D

Well I'm the last Generation that has the real accent, as I'm sad to say we have been replaced by other languages.

And for anyone that doesn't understand the hindrance it causes, here is basically the definitive list:

Now looking at that horrible lot and listening to them, I guess as the infliction will die with me maybe that isn't such a bad thing. :)
