Dropping out of SC into Planetary Rings

As you approach the rings in SC, just throttle down and keep going toward them. You'll drop out right next to them.

If you see a ring system with nice gaps, you can actually SC through or along the gaps.

Nice! I've just wet myself. Cant wait to try that!

Mass Lock... what a concept (from Elite) beats becoming a stain on the side of an alien planet... Stardreamer "Time control" anyone? :D

What is the 'extraction site' you guys are talking about?
In some of the planetary rings as you approach in SC, 'extraction sites' appear - they are mineral/metal rich zones with miners and various bad guys. Depends a lot on the system's economy.

All you need to do is throttle down. Once you hit the lowest possible supercruise speed, "safe disengage" will appear just above your radar. When you see that, just hit "J" twice. If you want to get as close as you can to the rings youll have to learn to judge that distance instinctively through continued practice. One way would be to select the nearest targetable object such as the planet the rings surround. That way you`ll have a km figure to judge distance by.

"Safe disengage" only appears if you're locked onto a nav target and in the blue for both speed and distance (and you only need to hit it once if you're locked). If you're just cruising around and want to stop, there is no such thing as safe disengage, and hitting J twice to initiate emergency brakes will give you a small amount of damage. Or am I way off?

Cool thnx. but what if there is no extraction site - like the ring near Beagle. How would I approach close enough so that im not in normal flight for 1000KM!!?

You just do it. You have total freedom to fly, both in conventional mode and FrameShift (fuel permitting).

That weird pause when you exit FS isn't Elite loading a fake "room" or "area". It's just a rough transition from one flight mode to another, with some networking "issues" right now.

You can exit FS up close to rings - or further away, and travel to them in conventional flight. It's all the same space.

Legit!

Well as promised. I followed all your advice and tried it. Please see postcards below! Its lovely here at the rings of Asellus 3. Bit chilly but spectacular views. Wish your were here, hugs and kisses XXX

Still no apology for calling the first correct answer a troll, then? :S

1) If the first responder feels slighted, I am more than happy to retract my accusations. That, however, is between him and me. He would have, Im sure PMd me if such was the case. I am sure he took my words as they were intended - as a laddish - "nice try but got ya!" remark to what I saw as "an hilarious" attempt to get me to slam into an asteroid belt.

2) I did admit that his (along with all other advice) was LEGIT. I put that word LEGIT in caps a couple of posts up I believe thus vindicating ALL posters.

Cheers,

GC
