Decided at the last minute to buy the Merc edition of the game before the offer ran out - so I don't have any prior experience with the game, and haven't been tracking game developments too closely over the past few months - so please be gentle with this harmless noob
Finally finished downloading the release client last night after work, and managed to create a character and do some initial flying around in system.
However, despite a number of ED sources stating that the game would support multiple characters per account, I can only seemingly create a single game save for a single character name? Worked out how to delete the game save and create a new character - but seemingly cannot have multiple simultaneous saves?
So - are the ED sources just wrong? Can I only create a single character in the game?
Am I forced to use the same character for Multiplayer, as well as Single Player modes?
I have done quite a bit of googling on this but cannot find any definitive answers from Frontier staff - and there doesn't appear to be anything on the forums (presumably because people are too busy flying their ships and blowing stuff up!).

On a completely different point - the character creation screen seems to indicate that when you start the game you can choose a number of different game access levels. Current Im just offered the 'NEW GAME' standard option, even though I have purchased the Merc Edition of the game.
Should I be seeing the Merc Edition appear as an extra options when I create a new character - or do I need to choose standard game, and then go hunting for my freebie Eagle ship using the in game stellar map?
