Distant Worlds II Event DW2 PS Edition

Is this still happening in Open? I'm not joining the expedition, but I'd love to be one of the "party boats" that sees you all on your way :D

I'll add you to the various PS DW2 things that are in place to support CMDRs on the expedition!
Ahh can I be added too please?

I don't recall if I signed up yet or not (I was awaiting the SRV fix). I'll be going as a Fuel Rat obviously, but possibly with SLF and guns for light escort duties too .Need to fiddle with builds, and decide between Cobra MK3(4?!), Krait or Conda.

We have a message thread for coordinating Fleet Logistics. Don't worry about notification spam, it'll be pretty quiet until pre-load day.
The spam was why I left AllCrow's previous mega-message thread: it was just continuous notifications :O which was annoying when playing games, and it looked like I could either disable all or none; and I kinda need them on for ratting.

Anyway not long to see what's what

It's criminal that we STILL can't mute individual threads.

Hello,

Bit of a casual gamer here, but have been a huge fan of Elite since the heady days of BBC B's and the Toshiba MSX that I played it most on. I even still have the original game manual with the scary wee short story in it! I've been playing Dangerous on and off since it came out on the PS4 and have done a few short trips. The longest I think was around 3000ly, so I'm not sure what I've let myself in for by signing up to this little jaunt. I'm piloting a Diamondback Explorer at the moment with a max jump of 41ly, a fairly good powerplant and the best fuel scoop I can find (75t/s).

How does the mechanics of this event work? Will we all be able to communicate during the game, or is it more of a 'role play' thing, in that although we're all going together, we won't actually see each other or be able to interact, other than through message boards? I always play in OPEN mode, but to be honest, I wouldn't know a computer generated ship from another player. What happens to ships that might struggle to keep up? I reckon The Beagle's got a fairly average jump distance, but gaming wise I'd probably struggle to squeeze more than a couple of evenings a week into the effort, so I think fairly early on, I'm going to start lagging behind! Even so, I'm quite excited at the prospect of doing this, even if I'm just following the jump wakes of the rest of the flotilla.

Sorry if these seems like silly questions, but I tend to just go for single player games, probably Battlefront 2 is the closest I've come to proper 'online' gaming, so although I feel like I'm a reasonable experienced pilot in ED, I'm a complete novice when it comes to proper online gaming

The social aspect of these types of events are based on waypoint meets. So there will be specific places where people can all meet up at a specific date/time. These usually tend to be on planets but are not always so. This accounts for the huge frustration experienced by many console players as we now cannot get out in SRVs (at least more than two) or the game crashes. We're really hoping this will be fixed in the latest update but there are no guarantees. There is usually a good deal of variance in jump ranges, but you'll soon get the hang of how many jumps you need to make and how long it will take you to keep up. It's usually pretty doable, and some people even forge ahead. If you don't want to meet up at the waypoints, there is no obligation to, you can just follow the route at your own pace. If you have a longer jump range it just gives you more time/opportunity to do your own thing between waypoints.

If you have a unengineered DBX I would suggest you fit an AFMU so you can use the neutron stars where available to extend your jump range to help cover distances.

Also, there are no silly questions! You'll find most people engaging in these events to be friendly and helpful.

41 ly should be plenty. I would consider a better fuel scoop if you can.

As far as we know, DW2 will take place in Open but the organisers are playing this by ear. If Open is not possible, I'm sure allcrowsareblack won't mind me inviting you to send her a PSN friend request so she can invite you to the Private Group we used for Enigma. In fact you should probably do that anyway as you'll also get added to the main DW2 chat thread which will be one of the comms channels you asked about.

As far as pace goes, I don't think you need to worry. This is just a rough estimate but expect a pace of about 1000 ly per day on weekdays only. Cigarette packet maths, 1000 / 40 = 25ish jumps per day. With a fast fuel scoop (!) and no sight-seeing that could be under 25 minutes travel time each day. An hour if you relax and do a bit of scanning or don't take my advice about that scoop :p

The final forum thread with all the details of Distant Worlds 2 is now live: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/452358-Distant-Worlds-2-A-Journey-of-Discovery

Get those Friend Requests in CMDRs! I know there are a lot of you out there from the sign-up data but I don’t have even half of you all yet, so please get in touch on PSN ASAP.

PSN facilities are:
Community
DW2 Chat

Also, no friend request, no PG access! Besides, I want to hear from you!

Send me an FR on PSN (not real name please) and let me know if you want to be added to the PS chat and/or the PG

See you soon! o7

Ok I'm confused now. I thought I had already signed up to the existing mega thread… there's now a new one I have to sign up to again? I'm also thinking now that as there are so many new things arriving in Chapter 4 I'm gonna need an Alt account for DW2 so I can have my main account stay in the bubble and enjoy all this stuff. Not to mention shrinking horse gonad simulator is less than 4 hours away right now… argh! I need to retire early.

The "The 'Outbound' Route Schedule" will remain visible to the public, correct? Don't worry, I don't want to grief anyone, I just want give a proper sendoff in my "party boat" (a humble Dolphin) and perhaps meet the fleet at a couple different waypoints to hand out water and bananas, take pictures for my local newspaper, etc. :D

Nothing extra to sign up to Lab other than a role if you fancy one and one of the social media outlets to keep in touch if that’s your thing

You'll be fine. There's a number of old fogies kicking about (C64 Elite myself), and a 41 DBX is pure luxury! [blah] in my day I went to Jaques (before it was even Colonia) in a 22Ly Cobra MK3, back, and then again in a 17Ly Python. Thru 't snow, both ways uphill, cockpit made out a paperbag.
Pure luxury 41Ly DBX! ;)

re: setup, I'm in DW2 chat and ACAB friend + PG already. Not signed up to the actual official thread (still awaiting SRV fix confirmation).

I've been assessing different ships, and annoyingly I might have to take the 'Conda, as the Krait won't fit everything (with SLF), or maybe a Python, meaning no SLF.
If "The Ships" reveal gives us the Cobra MK4 then i'll definitely be taking it, sod efficiency, but apart from that it may have to be a big ship like the conda or cutter (which is also a bit lacking, except in style). Grrrr!
