E: D @800x600 and ~8 FPS, So Why Am I Happy?

The person I wanted to get excited was David Braben, but he never responded. Oh well. There's always next year.

Should have looked more closely at video, but yeah, that was probably one of the better april fools out there in a long time.

Balanced right on the tip of believable and over the top. Was suspicious but could be plausible.

I've seen people run Elite on low settings on very under specced machines, and Raspberry Pi 3 b is not 'bad' in terms of computing power.

But yeah the giveaway was fps in video, but that said, very well done!

I'm calling it out here just now

You do realise that next year David Braben will prank us all by getting Elite: Dangerous to actually work on a Raspberry Pi

My question is how the hell did you get the ED x86 / x64bit code to run on an ARM processor!

Ah - the April the 1st method, Duh!!!

I can't even get ED to run on my 64bit Linux laptop!! using Wine - it just has too many DirectX and .NET dependencies to even start the game!!

As I said on the first page "Is it April Fools day already?". I knew something was fishy when I played the video. It's clearly running at a much higher framerate than the claimed 8 fps, so I figured the OP had just downscaled a regular ED video to 800x600. Even 8 fps sounded extremely unlikely because on top of the video card "emulation" you'd also need to emulate the Intel processor on the ARM to get Elite working and of course the operating system that runs the ED executable as well.

I'm not up to speed with the capabilities of the current version of Wine, but emulating a full fledged x86 processor on an anemic ARM chip at decent enough speed seemed highly unlikely.

So I'm glad that this April Fools prank didn't fool me!

TJ is just covering up that he supplied the Pi, edited the video and egged me on to fool all of you.

As it has been said many times before, it was all TJ's fault.

Of course all of us knew that it was T.j's fault. We never bothered saying at the time because we all assume that everyone knows T.j's to blame.
