E3 2015 speculations for Elite

I was discussing this in another thread recently.

It's clear in the latest dev diary that they have content to show off at e3 with regards to Elite and that a second team has been working on this content in the background, as players and the other team worked away on wings/powerplay/communityGoals.

Now as others have stated
There is a logic to Walking round MUST com first to planetary landings.
Otherwise we are relegated to flying down and docking at buildings.
Effectively flying/extending our docking experience with different vista to admire from our cockpits. (not that I'm saying procedurally generating heightmaps to fly around isn't super hard, but getting the gameplay right, will be).

But if we can land...wherever, but are forced to launch probes and vehicles to "explore" whilst we sit in the cockpit....or just go into third/first person vehicles that we can't....exit??? that would be weird, and who would populate these worlds??

Walking around the ship is a free update (by my reconing).
A bought for planetary shield can, by the canon, hide behind a paywall.
Walking around your own ship can not.

Walking around your ship has other factors.

Which of course being within the correlis effect of a rotating space station you got normal first person controls. That in itself is *HARD* to get right.

But what about in space......your have micro-gravity conditions to work around.

Getting the basics of just walking around your ship, will take some beta'ing. We got frame rates, we got gameplay, and multiples of that too.
In the "future of Elite" one dev mentioned get out of the ship and executing repairs, another zero-gee combat, and another moping up waste spills and repelling Boarding parties.

How do you go from "walking" with magnetic boots(?) To Zero-gee combat inside of your own ship? One tap of space to activate/deactive your boots, Double tap space to "leap" could we then theoretically clamp ourselves to roof and walls of our ships and hide in the corners, picking off raiders.

So just walking around Coriolis effect or not - presents two sets of movement controls make us all bitter/happy with.

Then all the additional gameplay elements.
How much fun is clicking on panel to fix it?
How much fun is clicking on spilliage to mop up?

But surely walking around should be a paid for update....I agree, and you can make it so via
STATIONS REQUIRE PERMITS. Boom! Pay-wall.
You get a teaser with the "in-ship" walking around, but you got to pay to expand the game INTO the stations.

Walking around adds MORE complications for example:
-----------------------------------------------------
Right now in 1.4
You could easily add cabins (like a refinery/cargo rack)
and easily manage crew and passenger manifests as yet another cockpit console.
We can have a clones character model in the additional cockpit seats to "simulate" crew/passengers.

(of which all must factor into the background simulation and powerplay....visiting dignitaries, refugee, etc etc.).

But as soon as you add "walking round". those NPC's require proper bodies and faces.
That's a lot lot lot of work there which deserve to be paid for.

And players will want faces, damned character creation screens.

Of course it can.

You simply can't stand up from your pilot seat...just like it is in the game currently. Seems to work just fine right now. ;)

As per my post elsewhere, I think that they might have a collaboration with Microsoft since windows 10 will be out soon which is also going to be on Xbox and we know that the controller doesn't have enough buttons so therefore voice commands will have to be prominent and windows 10 will have Cortana therefore the big reveal must be a free decal for all, sorry I mean Cortana support which should please all of the users that uses a third party program to do voice commands.

In previous Elite (at least Frontier and First Encounters, the ones i've played), it was already possible to land on planets, but you were stuck into your ship. You didn't feel it weird, you had the possibility to flight on the planet atmosphere, visit the landscapes and then lands on the stations you wanted. + the possibility to add extractors on the ground.

So in my opinion it is not mandatory to push one feature before the other. Both will have consequences to the other for sure.

I only hope that at least one of them will be teased at E3, it would be awesome! (crossfingers!)

Not read the entire thread so if someone has already said this ... Ooops :)

As it is quite likely some kind of announcement regarding the X-Box release, It could be that we are getting walking around ships/stations (paid expansions) and the X-Box release will include that expansion for free as an X-Box bonus.

Just a thought.

I'm curious, planetary landings, walking around ships and all the fps stuff that would involve. Can all this be done with the current system specs for the game and also the online servers ? They seem to be struggling now with just the ships moving around the place to meet other cmdrs. I'm not being critical I'm just asking.

braben said it is exactly created for that, of course it will need some more work

have faith :)

There seem to be a lot of people working in the industry who are posting on these forums and who would surely know about the coding that would take. this should give an idea as to how long it would take to implement them into an update.

Couple things sparked my imagination:

From Galnet, Hudson post 13 June:

“As I said when I was the Shadow President, we are entering dangerous times. The Empire have been expanding recently more than they have for centuries. We have failed our own frontier worlds for decades and it is hardly surprising they are leaving the Federation as they are. We need a stronger military, a military that gets respect from our youth. We need better soldiers, better fighters, better pilots. We need to be more outward-looking.

-Perhaps the intention is to look outside the Military and enroll pilot federation CMDRs in military actions? New kind of communitiy goal.

"Our youth has become flabby. Lying inanimate, plugged in to their sims hour after hour, day after day, living in dream worlds that never have existed and never will exist. They need to take part in the real world, and so we will be creating programs to allow them to do just that. Programmes that will excite them, engage them, train them. We will fund these programmes in full, the first of which will be announced to Congress on Tuesday 16th.”

-That could mean, NPC Wingmen and Crew being trained by CMDRs, in the real world?

What I'm hoping is, PP is background stuff with distant characters that could be said to be similar to Tier1 NPCs from the DDF. I hope that there is some persistent NPC's and ones we can interact with, coming soon(TM)! Which fill in the gaps between the Background Sim non-persistant NPC's and PP's persistent but non-interactive NPC's.

Why not wait until they actually announce something instead of wasting five pages of speculation?

There's always the 2016 Presidential election and Qatar World Cup as well. Let's argue who will win those.

Spectulation's fun!

Theres nothing fun, useful, productive or imaginative about your post tho ;)

I'm not sure Frontier are big enough to attract the attention of IGN without Xbox One being attach to it, Frontier themselves have said we should expect a week worth of announcements starting today.

It's basically part of Microsoft presser. Everyone follows big stuff. FD won't do any separate presser (for them that would be wasting money), they will just release PR and will pull in media in their viewing room behind doors. So this is not an indication.

Ok speculations for dreamers (enjoy it's free ;) ):
- Planetary landing;
- News ships;
- Deathmatch/team deathmatch/arena;
- Thargoids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;
- More paintjobs;
- New stations;
- Missiles finally useful;
- All coming out right after E3 conference!

Now more reasonable:
- Xbox One version because they need to advertise it and get more players;
- PP, because they need something that is not too sandboxy for some of the Xbox One players.

I hope the reasonable part is wrong :D
