OP has a point. The ED economy is a mess. The fun missions (eg. assassination, piracy) are difficult, pay badly and take a long time, the dull missions (passenger/cargo transport, scans of tiny bases) are very easy, pay well and can be done fast. The point of missions is to steer us into fun activities, but in fact they do the opposite.
There's also so much cash in circulation due to assorted exploits that for a lot of players, cash is pretty much irrelevant. What is the point in a 100cr fine when a simple, not-exploity base scan or passenger mission can earn 30,000x that in 15 minutes?
The game badly needs a cash sink, ideally one that scales with net worth so as to put a dent in those huge fortunes and make money matter.
