ECM or Point Defence?

Not that one has been fired at me for a while - which is better to counter missiles?

I have chaff & ECM on my cobra but not sure what is most effective?

point defence protects against all missiles like dumbfire and torpedoes at cost of higher power, while ecm only protects you from tracking missiles.

Also, point defence is automatic. Don't you have to fire ECM manually?

Haven't installed either but from the outfitters descriptions I understand chaff counters gimballed and turreted weapons whereas ECM counters missiles.

I virtually always take point defense, as it has no weight.

ECM may be a better idea for larger ships that are less affected by the mass, as it's a more reliable way to protect from many missiles/mines at once.

Location of the module is also important. Some ships have bad utility hardpoint locations that make PDTs less useful. You need to know where these hardpoints are, and make sure they have line of sight to any incoming missiles. ECM does not require this.

Small ships that can dodge dumbfires are better off with ECM as it is a reliable way to eliminate tracking missiles.
Large ships that cannot dodge dumbfires are better off with (multiple) PDTs. Dumbfire missiles wreck large ships.

Point defence shoots all dumbfire and homing missles as well as mines, but it may not successfully hit them everytime.

the NPC anacondas and such are completely loaded down with point defence - but it's completely useless against dumbfires i fire on them.

it might work better on seekers, but i haven't tried them yet.
