ED & 3DTVs

So how do we see the battle video in 3D on our Nvidia kit? I installed TriDef. But when you run that stuff the monitor doesn't go to 3D mode. Even if I set to always be in 3D mode, the TriDef built in demo's don't do any 3D.

How do you set it up?

You shouldnt need tridef with nvidia. You tried to set up your screen in 3D mode in Nvidia control panel?

A simple rule of thumb if you're buying a TV; if it is LED/LCD STEER CLEAR. If it is plasma buy.:D

oh god it is *that* chestnut again ;)

A properly configured high end plasma set is a wonder to behold (I have a 42 inch plasma in my lounge, albeit entry level and nothing like a pioneer Kuro / Panasonic high end set)

but that being said, compared to my 70inch LED LCD which runs on under 200w, you need a small nuclear power station to run it.

Why I came out with that old chestnut is because of poor shadow detail of LED/LCD compared to plasma. You need to see details in black areas in space. Space is generally a black background. I'm not being derisory of LEDS/LCD but for space games it not great. Shadow detail - i.e. dim details in a black-background are important in space games, flight-sims at night bandit in-bound 10'clock. Errr I don't see nothing:eek: Hey man you're meant to be providing air-defence for my cargo ship. Black levels are important as space goes jet black to lighter washed out blacks. I'm just hope I'm helping people understand. Those considering projectors, all well and good but remember image quality not just size. Photography and video were a hobby in my younger days...

Yep colour correction; I just use a cheap colorimeter Gretag Macbeth/Pantone Huey for my PC. I want to see the colours/colour-grading that the FD artists intended.

Wattage never bothered with that TX-P50VT20: -
Rated Power Consumption 425 W
On mode Average Power Consumption** 252 W

So is it 252W or 425W?

Elite is currently setup (as in my development build) to render side-by-side 3D. I've yet to look into what are the most common TV modes we need to support. Via displayport I can get it to do 120hz 1080p (so 60hz per eye)

Hi there. Does that mean it also supports native NVidia 3DVision, or is that something completely different?

This is a pleasant surprise, i have a 3D TV :D
i have a limited knowledge on this subject but as far as what tv modes to support i believe SBS 3D is supported on all domestic 3D TV's

now not only do I have to find a way to link up my PC to my TV i have to persuade the wife to let me play Elite D on it instead of watching eastenders, time for some flowers & choc's :)

It may be a good idea to run a quick poll of the type of 3D people would prefer. I'd be quite happy with SBS.

Has anyone tried running the alpha through Tridef Ignition? If it's DirectX 11 then it should work? <hopeful look:rolleyes:>

I could be wrong but I dont think you can do FULL 1080p 3D on a 3D TV (for gaming).

It is a limit to the HDMI inputs on the set, the max it can for 1080P 3D at is 24hz - fine for movies, rubbish for gaming.

I think the best bet will be a horizontal split, or 960x1080 60hz

This makes the most sense to me as it is essentially how the occulus rift will work I believe.

This is a way better solution than Nvidia 3DTV play provides which is 720P and looks (comparatively) rubbish (good way to compare is Trine 2, as that supports native 960x1080p 3D in game and also is supported by 3DTV play. the native support is clearly superior.

Have to disagree I'm afraid. I run 3DTvPlay and it looks great even @720p. This is even on 46 inch screen sitting only 6 feet away. I tested Skyrim SBS 1080p (960x1080p each eye) via Tridef against nv 3DVision 720p and I was surprised at how crisper the 720p looked due to much better horizontal resolution. (Emphasis on surprised).

I used to badger Nvidia for SBS support in 3DVision, but after that test, I stopped caring about SBS support. If SBS is all we get, then fine, at least I can continue playing in 3D but I would still prefer 3DVision support as I would then switch to 720p frame packed.

Yes, I tried it. The only way to invoke Tridef is to create a profile for the exe itself but the exe does not allow direct execution as you get an error telling you that it needs to be run via launcher.

Unless someone else worked out how. If so, please reveal the secret :D

Has anyone tried running the Alpha on a 3DTV using either Nvidia or ATI cards? I'm looking to build a new PC with the intent of playing on a 60" 3DTV so input from anyone who's tried it would be helpful
