Setup guide by SlackR

1. Download the runtime and (optional) SDK
2. Set up the Rift by following the instructions ...
http://static.oculusvr.com/sdk-downl...ion_Manual.pdf
3. Make sure you update the firmware.
4. Test using the small room demo and / or oculus world using direct mode.
5. If they work, calibrate your IPD and tracking zone using the config app and small room. I find putting the camera on the back wall and moving the desk forward allows for more wiggle room.
6. If everything is cool, switch to extended mode inside the config app. For the moment keep the monitor set to primary.
7. Install Bilagos app and execute
8. Run Elite, setting graphics properties to secondary display and oculus rift (headphones)

*If trying to run other demos, then set the rift as the primary display.

*For improved frame rate, without wanting to sacrifice too much graphically, try setting shadows to medium.

A Un-officlal start stop manager is available here.

I haven't tested it so be a but careful before using.

Judder issues.

Interesting test...
Maybe DX9 is the way to go for those still with issues ... Worth a try at least

E3 2014 Demo on the Rift

Hi,

I've got two questions that have been tormenting me for the last few days. I don't know whether anyone who can answer them will read this, but I'll try anyway:

1.) According to the Escapist they were using a "HD Oculus Rift dev kit" with head tracking. Now which was it? A DK2 or a "HD prototype" as some sites suggested?

2.) All the articles about the E3 Elite Dangerous Rift experience I could find did mention how awesome it was. I did not however read any mention about text. Did anyone here try it and could comment on how readable in-game text was on the DK2? (assuming it was a DK2)

Regards

I'm pretty sure that they were demoing on an HD version (which has inertial and magnetometer based head tracking).

David Braben has mentioned in an interview that Frontier has DK2, and Oculus has definitely confirmed that they've sent out a hundred or so to key developers.

So *if* FD currently have a DK2, then there would almost certainly be some sort of NDA to go with it, and DB would have to keep it guarded by laser equipped frickin' sharks deep in his volcanic lair.

The HD version and DK2 are 1080p, the CV1 will be >1080p.

Suggestion: Oculus DK2 "look through" mode.

I would like to suggest the following feature for DK2 Oculus, a "Look Through" mode:

The Developer Kit 2 of the Rift has a USB port for "peripherals".

Step 1: Attach a webcam to the USB port on DK2, attack to front of Rift:

Step 2: Allow users to create an area outline where their controls actually are.

Step 3: In game, when the "area" is in visible screen, composite the webcam image on top, in place: (Excuse the hack job, don't have a panorama screenshot)

I like this.
But instead, what about having the game detect your controller and then change the ones in the cockpit to suit.
We already know that the stick and throttle will move in the cockpit as the pilot uses them. These motions will be your actual movements so the only thing missing is the configuration of the controller.
It'll be difficult to do with joypads or single sticks etc...
Perhaps this could be released as a premium feature for a future paid expansion pack of pilot comforts etc...

Cause I need this if I'm trying to figure out where the button or key on the keyboard is so I can press it

This would actually be a nightmare to calibrate properly. It would be easier to just get FD to make textures for all the stuff here and change the cockpit controls according to what the player has...xD

Oh snap, found another theme for an expansion..:D

Get a HOTAS, bind your keys on it. Problem solved..C:

All the controls can be on the flight sticks.
Shouldn't really have to press the keyboard in-game. Unless it's the escape key and you can find that by touch easily.
Or use Voice Attack.

If you have a HOTOS setup, you should be able to bind most keys on the stick it self, I have yet to need to actually take my OR off when playing Elite during the session. You get used to it, and can do everything by touch.

Only issue that comes is having to find the right hand position to switch from the HOTOS to the keyboard, for example, when you have to type something, but it will get better when the resolution improves from DK2 onwards.

Actually, how hard is 3-D to 2-D mapping because the camera is taking pictures in a three-dimensional world

It was a HD prototype, and the text was totally readable... There were quite a few oohs and aahs at the menu, and I think that's why :)

I hope the Rift works for people for whom normal 3d tv doesn't work properly, otherwise the future will have to happen without me. :(

supercruise distance labels are hard to read with a hd oculus. Menus are perfectly fine, those were a problem with regular DK1 Rifts.

Imho ED is playable in a regular DK1 as well were it not for the side menus.

i hope frontier enlarges the FSD hud labels a bit for oculis users, then it will be purrfect.

You're fine! I can't discern stereoscopic 3D either... It has something to do with depth perception. And that also apparently hampers VR... But I tried the Rift last year and things felt like they had "dimension" to 'em (lol)

They are beaming two separate images, directly into each eye, so it should work for you. It definitely works for me and I can't see some types of 3D due to astigmatism (eyes are slightly different shapes)
