ED and Windows MR (Samsung Odyssey @ 1440x1600)

Hi,

I too have the odyssey and here are my thoughts in no particular order:

The god rays you are referring to when it appears it is not being caused by anything on screen can be tested as follows: Set your holo me to have an all white suit and then set it to all black.

I suspect the headset is rendering outside the vision of the lens at the outer portions of the screen causing the reflections to be seen. The good news is this is a software solution.

For best image quality setting SMAA to 1.5 and HMD to 1.5 gives beautiful text. If both are set to 1.0 then it wont look as good. However it brings my 1080TI to a crawl.

Station menu seems to make tracking super choppy. Lowering the visual settings improves the stuttering.

As I've mentioned, 1.5X SMAA is NOT necessary... HMD to 1.5X is all that is needed. 1.5X SMAA will greatly slow down your machine without much noticeable benefit (beyond what you get by setting HMD to 1.5X)...

Was just curious if you've tried the Samsung HMD recently? I was considering it although I wonder if a 1080ti is really enough now, doesn't really seem like Nvidia is going to announce much of anything anytime soon either. I was leaning towards the Samsung or if the Pimax 5k actually made it out going that route maybe.

The 5k and 8k pimax both have the exact same rendered resolution, they will be identical in demand in that regard.
So honestly don't see much reason to get the 5k.

The difference is in 8k is the built in upscaler and higher Res panels, but that upscaling is handled by hardware in the HMD itself.

There's at least a couple hundred reasons at the very least lol. Also it might be easier to get a 5k sooner and personally I think the 5k resolution is likely enough especially with the 200fov.

Upscaling can present a whole new mess of issues. I didn't get in on the pre order so I could be looking end of the year to get an 8k due to demand where as the 5k might be more available.

I get the feeling that users of these new higher resolution HMDs are overloading their PCs, and hence the choppy performance. Are you guys monitoring GPU and CPU loads while using your HMDs? VR will bring the strongest PC to it's knees.

Are you using Steam ASW as recommended by Steam? What's the point in aiming for a perfect 90 FPS if it's an unobtainable stuttering mess on todays hardware anyway.

The way I read the comments, as soon as people dial down settings, these new HMDs work as expected. Yes?

I concur - HMD to 1.5 with SMAA 1.0 works well on my Lenovo/1060 laptop, and Rift/1070 Desktop card.

Well I wrote out a post on my cell phone but it didn't show up hmm?

With regards to no reason to get the 5k, there are at least a couple hundred reasons to do so ($$). With that said honestly I think the 5k's resolution should be just fine, and on top of that upscaling can add a whole new list of issues and artifacts by itself. Also I didn't get into the pre-order/kickstarter so the chances of me finding a 5k vs an 8k is much higher. I think the 5k resolution with 200FOV is likely enough.

Any updates on performance/issues with the more recent Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR releases?

I'm looking at the Odyssey as well as the Rift or waiting on the Vive Pro.... I had tried the Odyssey and the Rift at a Microsoft store and was impressed with both, but only had the options to look at the canned demos in the MS Store.

I ended up purchasing the Odyssey after being unsatisfied with the rift experience (mainly due to text clarity causing serious eye strain). I can say the resolution is definitely better, and colors are way better too. There are definitely more color variations in stars and so on! Also something that I liked is the fact that the sky was actually black, where as on the rift it has that thing where it doesn't let the pixels turn off all the way and everything is kind of gray and blotchy because of it.

The sweet spot for optics is definitely small, but so far I haven't found that to be real horrible after you get used to it. I've got 30 days to mess with it before the return period ends so we'll see how I feel at the end of that, my big grips is the god rays personally. I find them even more distracting because of how they work in the odyssey. I'm still going to give it some time and see how I like it in the end though.....

I really don't understand why cheaper headsets like the Gear VR and Chinese brand headsets use a-spherical lenses but the expensive headsets like Rift, Vive, Vive Pro, Odyssey etc are using fresnel? Wouldn't aspherical lenses offer better clarity and completely get rid of the god ray issue?

Also personally I didn't notice any huge performance issues with the Odyssey that really took me out of the experience so far. I still have more playing to do as thus far I only have an hour or so in. The extra resolution is huge imo, the lines for planets and atmospheres and stuff aren't all aliased to hell and back like they are on the rift and so on, and text is way clearer although still not perfect. I bet if they used the other type of lenses the Odyssey's text would be perfect.

I have been playing with the Samsung HMD with elite for awhile now. Have to disagree. It's excellent. Higher res. Better contrast. Colours pop. I also have the Rift and the Vive. The only complaint I have is that it gets hot/fogs up a bit faster than the vive.

Just make sure you go into settings (windows desktop), select Mixed reality/Headset Display/Visuals and chooce either "High" or "Very high (beta)".

Agree 100%. The Samsung stands out above the other WMR headsets and even the Rift.

I have been using Dell Visor for almost 4 months for now and performance + stability has improved hugely using SteamVR for Mixed Reality. What I noticed was SteamVR using bigger resolution than Visor has, so I dropped it's SuperSampling to 0.8 to match Visors 1400pix resolution. Ingame I use SS 1.0 and HMD quality 1.5. Looks good, runs smoothly with 1060 6Gb and i5 7th gen. And I did a short comparision to Vive quality, Visor was sharper. I assume that Odyssey with 1600pix is even more. Too bad we cant get it here in Europe.

From what I hear I don't really miss much about the odyssey.
For those interested I am sure the Vive pro will be an option.

And personally, but tremendously more risky there is the p8k..
But I'd expect the pro to become available before the latter.

From what I gather Headset display visual settings only affect the cliffhouse and might cause problems for cards with limited Vram. Check out this thread from reddit where a microsoft dev gives his input on this.

My rift died a few days ago and I had a chance to get a samsung odyssey so I did. Been tinkering with it and the resolution bump is nice. Also the colors are good and blacks are very black. I was having some trouble getting it smooth and clear. I have been experimenting with different supersample settings and also the beta ASW for windowsMR. I was not happy with it before the auto enable ASW was released. Weird thing is that I was struggling with FPS and clarity and just to mess about I put steamvr SS to 300% (ED set to 1.0 and 1.0 on HMD quality and SS). Image is clear and smooth. Earlier with manual ASW I had tried 200% in ED and Iracing and Iracing showed 45 fps (ASW) activated and it was a juddery mess. Same with ED, alot of judder. In Iracing without ASW and 150% without ASW I had alot of problems maintaining 90 fps and framedrops down to 85 and over all less than satisfactory smoothness. I'm still not confident in my understanding for the quirks with windowsMR, but seems a bit strange that Iracing atleast showed rock solid 90 fps at 300% SS in steamVR and no drops to 45 in areas where I would earlier get framedrops.

I guess it can be that there is a difference with auto and always ASW on as it relates to the iracing fps counter. I'm on a 1080ti and 8700K @ 4.9Ghz.

My impression of the samsung galaxy: It is not sold in Norway so it cost me quite a bit to get it, but I was curious about the visual bump. Now as I don't have a rift to go back to its hard to judge if it was worth it. It is visually better for sure and probably worth it if I could have gotten it at the normal price. The problems I have with it is the that I prefer the rift skimask instead of the headband as this puts some strain on my forhead and also I seem to sweat alot more with the odyssey. Can be solved with a fan though. Coming from the rift the hand controllers was a bit of a let down. Both because the rift has alot better tracking and also the ergonomics of the touch controllers are alot better. I was having a lot of problems in onward and pavlov because the rings on the odyssey controllers got in the way of the headset when aiming with the virtual weapons stock in my shoulder. I felt like I had to partision a bit of my awarness to keep the controllers within this envelope which felt like a chore. Also I felt that the controllers on the odyssey had alot more jitter and that made aiming difficult in those games. Finally I very much prefer thumbstick movement over trackpads. I've had the rift since release so it might be something I just have to learn, but I hope windowsMR opens up for different ways to configure the controllers. Inside out tracking is awesome though and works great for the headset. Very easy to set up and move between my simrig and my workstation (work...yea right :) )

Final thoughts: I realize I was pretty happy with the rift and while the resolution bump in the odyssey is nice for the increase was not as important for me as I thought it would be. Had I been able to return the odyssey I would most likely have done so and bought a second hand rift to use until the my kickstarter Pimax arrives. Mostly because of the increased premium paid to get the odyssey here in Norway. If I could buy it at the US price I think I would think differently.

Anyways, as with the rift as one gets to know the ins and outs of the headset this might change in time. Also hoping for better controller tracking with the upcoming windows update.

What god rays, there are non that i can see, only a slight blur around the edges and nothing compared to the rifts CV1, the display for text is far better than the rift or the vive, remember that the pimax took over 2 years to become anywhere near usable for ED and many other games due to software interaction and very slow software updates and development, IPD does start at 60 and i dont have an issue with it at that setting, It will probably take a few more months at least to start getting better software interactions and updates that will eventually iron out a lot of the faults.
