ED DK2 Settings.

In direct mode you don't need to set up refresh rate, it is running on 75Hz.
How did you set up your IPD? I found out that moving the 3d separtion slider changes the IPD value in Elite's config file, but no idea if this is being used, I typed in my IPD size there manually and do not touch the slider :)

On single GTX 970 I'm getting judder in space stations with direct mode, so for the time being I run on extend mode, setting on roughly medium with AA off. Text as always hard to read but I've learned to live with it :)

There's an 'advanced' button in the Oculus configuration utility that lets you set it.

If I run in Direct mode I see refresh options of something like 60Hz, 55.9Hz, etc - but not 75Hz. It definitely feels smoother for me as a secondary display, but that could be something else I changed at the same time, or placebo. I had issues with my graphics card that it won't recognise direct mode using HDMI - so I'm using the DVI adapter - could be related to that too...

I just did the super sampling thing and wow.. that made a big difference with the text being readable. I'm very new to ED and everything has been fairly smooth until I got to Crampton Port just now. It was a bit laggy so I'll have to lower some settings I think. It's hard to believe that 2x780s are not enough but the Rift is a beast I guess.

Hi. How did you get super sampling to work with 2x780's? I get crazy flicker with SLI. Mind you not tried it in Gamma.

The lag is reportedly due to SLI which introduces latency. In some other thread a member tested 2x980 vs 1x980 and the single card configuration won. No judder or stuttering, whereas there were some with SLI. Interestingly he had to physically remove one of the cards to get best results.
SLI for VR will become viable once Nvidia release the SLI VR drivers they are supposedly working on.

FWIW, I tried supersampling (forcing a high resolution through the nvidia controlpanel and GPU downsample to 1080p) and I had to set most if not all settings to low on my modern rig (4970k 4ghz + GTX980), whereas in 1080p I can run everything maxed out without any judder. So I too will have to wait for the VR SLI drivers and then get a second card... :)

FWIW I just had a really good session with the DK2, tweaking settings. My system is reasonable, but not outrageous - an i5 and an AMD R9 270 (fairly moderate GPU by current standards)

I found running it as a secondary display allowed me to choose 75Hz as the refresh, whereas direct didnt.

Turning OFF vsync helps smear out any juddering. I set everything else to high

I found that turning ON FXAA anti-aliasing massively improved the visuals of distant objects, especially stations. I didn't notice a performance hit on my card with this on.

I turned shadows to medium but this seems to be buggy wit the Rift, as the light source seems to follow your head ! Turned back to high !

I also set up my IPD - I don't know if it was this, or resetting the Rift centering, but I found text much more readable and found I was sat 'closer' in the cockpit then before.

The 3D separation control seems to do nothing for me. I do find that everything feels a tad too small. For instance, the pilot body looks about ¾ scale. I was hoping to be able to change this sensation of size, but can't see how. I can only imagine how huge the stations would look then !

Best of all, I turn ON bloom and cranked the gamma right up to the right. Sacrilege I know, but it really improves the visuals for me - I hardly see any black smearing. I set it at about the level where smearing around the canopy frame just vanished, which was about 9/10 of the way up the slider. This combination of settings really makes the light on stations look realistic - it's bright and the reflections really blow out. Looks great IMO

I kept the Occulus quality slider almost at the top - again, about 9/10 of the way.

These settings let me play a very smooth game on the rift with readable text and fantastic visuals, on a relatively modest GPU. Incidentally, I noticed that the GPU is not getting above about 75% usage, but these are the maximum settings I can get without seeing juddering. I feel there's definoe some optimisation gains to be had in the DK2 drivers or something.

Hope these settings are useful for someone

OK, so I have GTX 770, which I would though is around the same level as R970.

Your settings gives me judderring when moving head. + You cannot seem to turn off VSYNC once you select oculus rift 3D mode. Turning on bloom seems to add some more light and boosting gamma looks ok, even so I think its matter of preference. Text readablity is not better its same, only when you do the "leaning back" trick. So.. :/

I followed these instructions..
http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2cnas5/supersampling_the_dk2_2560x1440_in_elite_dangerous/

I do have settings lower but I had to do that without the extra resolution. I double checked and I am in SLI so maybe it's a fix in Gamma? It's all I've played so I can't compare it to beta, sorry.

If it helps.. I know I'm in Extended mode on the Rift. I have vsync off, blur off, can't remember what else but pretty low settings.

I've never tried it with SLI turned off. I often turn of SLI in order to do GPU rendering in Blender so it's easy to do. Maybe I'll try that when I get home tonight. It would be crazy if that give better results but a gtx780 is a very fast card. I only have 2 in order to render but thought SLI would be good for ED.

Has anyone been able to run the DK2 with maxed out settings? If so, what is your hardware?

You guys are right about super sampling with sli. You lose way to much to do this and AA does help. I've been testing it today on a work machine with 2 titans and here are my best results:

2xTitans Best Results:
Run in SLI
Extended mode for rift (kinda have to do this with SLI but I tested both and SLI wins)
I can set everything to as high as it will go with SMAA except for:
Texture Quality -Low
Reflection Quality -Low

I see some fps issues when approaching a base but they go away after like 5 or 10 seconds so I think that's a streaming problem (the game not loading in the interior of the base fast enough is my guess).

I'm going to try these settings on my 780s when I get home. It's super smooth here.

Foxis, are you running Direct or Extended on your 980? Are you really running everything on high (including Texture and Reflection Quality)? If that is the case then the Maxwell GPU wins all around.

I have tried direct mode do you find it looks better then super sampling I am getting some judder but everything looks really clear and I always make sure the IPD matches with the oculus profile.

I also have the GTX970, but running 2 in SLI. I have everything maxed out and it runs fine in Extended mode (supersampling). Unfortunately, Direct mode has definite judder issues, nauseating to sit in a station.

I do need to play with AA, the resolution issue is very noticeable in ED.

I use a super sampled res - run 2 x 970s SLI

Extended mode

All maxxed out

Smooth as silk and looks bootiful

Direct mode is horrific.....

Nosh

Were you locked at 75Hz in Direct. I've not managed to fiddle that yet.

It was locked, I think, but I have never got direct mode working properly......it flickers like mad. Tried no SLI, still no joy.

Extended mode works for me real nice, so I am happy to stick with that.....
