ED may have issues...but there isnt a better PC space flight sim in VR.

Yes, Im back. I took a break to see what other space sims are out there in VR. And Ive come to the realization there isnt anything as fun and challenging as ED. And its so damn REAL! Ive resolved to just deal with its various frustrations (lags / disconnects / etc.) because when it works its an awe inspiring experience.

True. There are some - not many - games in a similar space to ED, but there's always something missing, be it the single-player only nature of the X series of games, the inability of the developer to release a basically functional working game (Star Citizen), horrible console flight controls (No Man's Sky), unreleased games (In the Black), and so on and so forth.

The initial Odyssey release really annoyed me, especially the video released where Braben tried to gaslight the entire community (it works on my 980). so much so that I didn't play the game for the best part of two years.

Yet here I am. Still playing. It's a flawed game, but all genius is flawed.

I haven't played them all but i really doubt there is a better space sim, period.
NMS is nice and i would play it if Elite Odyssey didn't exist but for me it's too cartoon and arcade like. Good game though.
I also like the X series but a small universe and no planetary landings/bases. Also a good game though. (i don't own X4 as i have EDO)

I have played EDO with a 970 and although one has to play on (not quite) lowest settings (1080p), it ran (for me) at an acceptable level and i say that because i thoroughly enjoyed FE2 on the Amiga, which at the time blew every other Amiga game out of the water. I mean, an entire galaxy on a 1.44MB. o_O

In my opinion, David Braben has created the greatest game ever made.
As an avid game/sim player over many years, most games keep my attention for around an hour or so, it's only this one where i play for hours and still play since release.
My personal opinion only. o7

Was that at launch, before the Devs implemented FSR? The issue I had was the implication that it ran acceptably, which at the time was patently untrue.

I haven't suggested otherwise! It's a great game.

my old pc is a Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5820K CPU @ 3.30GHz 3.30 GHz (16gb corsair vengeance)
with a GTX970(4 gb vram)odyssey runs on that on low settings with shadows off (1920x1080 vga mon hdmi stutters go figure?) reasonably well not a touch on my GTX 4090 based rig but still it runs fine all the same🤷‍♂️
odyssey when first released was an unoptimized mess it took a year approx to get it working right so even high end cards struggled on settlements on foot
as for NMS we all know the nightmare that was when first released so sir david breadbin god of the 1 to 1 scale 3D space sim aint all that bad imo
titles like cyberpunk had the same kinda launch fiasco

pp2 is still a mess so i expect more of the same or a lot worse come the 26th what with the gen public being the quality control dept🤷‍♂️

I had a 960 (2GB) and Skylake at the time and it worked for me @1080. It did not "work" to a level I would have been comfortable signposting it on a public stream if I was the voice of authority though, I agree.

But that said, it's got a little bit fatter in a couple of the releases since U15, and in U19 it got a LOT fatter. I can't imagine it would be a good time now. (Yes I know this guarantees one of you will reply with your story of how you hacked Windows 11 onto a 4770k and it's perfectly fine actually you insensitive clod)

Anyway, if you stick to OP's point - space-side Odyssey play is exactly the same as Horizons 4.0 and remains unbeatable. (Anyone trying to run VR on a 2GB VRAM card, that is a YOU problem.)

would not have thought it would run on as low as 2gb of vram to any playable standard
but 4gb of vram is still on the playable side just.............

No. not at launch, after FSR.

I realise you haven't suggested otherwise, it was just my personal opinion only. :)
I respect others opinions too. I'm not one of those EDO fan boy people you know. 😜

As much as I love VR ED, forgetting about story lines and game features for a sec, I still prefer the VR immersion of XR over EDO. In my objective, quantitative, empirical, analysis, certified by Belgian University Logical Lessons Sterling Halls In Tienen, the cockpit feel of XR makes ED cockpits feel cartoonesque, when I switch back and forth between them. An Anaconda up close looks about the size of my forearm. A station in ED doesn't 'look' 100s of meters long, more like something I could stretch out and pick up by hand ( and I don't mean my giant green space hand ). However, In XRVR, stations, even just their components, seem much larger. I have no idea why, maybe it's just me. Of course once you've done a lap of the space highways in XRVR, you've basically completed the whole game.

NB: I did get X4 working in VR but there's no way my brain will buy it unless I'm already three sheets to the wind.

While waiting for my VKB HOSAS and Index to arrive I checked out SC. What a piece of crap. I couldnt even get thru the main tutorial because the game couldnt load my ship in the hanger. I saw user reports of this bug from 6 months ago. It makes me appreciate ED even more.

ya agreed scale just looks off from what you would see if it was real............ (distances are usually underestimated in space probably due to artificial eye pressure climatisation and low g but scale perception remains largely unaffected at relatively close focal range )
but according to distance travelled readout metres\second they are massive
when on foot taking a stroll under under a parked annie@nearly 2 meters per second however the scale looks correct🤷‍♂️
it is odd pardon the pun:giggle:

star cit is still only in beta for the past 14 years lol the alpha release is supposed to be this year (but maybe pushed back to 2035) :ROFLMAO:
and the cry game dev engine is well dated now..........
(glad i did not contribute to think some could have easily died in that timeframe)
the only game i am awaiting is GTA
that will give 5090's and capture cards something meaty to chew on with the updated rage engine version 9 enhancements
