I don't care about quests and built in story. ED is "open world" so that is OK.
I want to colonize a planet. I have the ships and the money to build a base around it out of pure gold. Hire some security to patrol the area. Recruit and transport workers to produce the stuff I want to sell.

If I can do what I want with the toys around, then I should be able to do it. Unless ED universe and anything in it is just not considered toys to play with. Or maybe, FD said "You must do this and that with your toy" and building and shaping was not among them.

If you want tot colonize a planet you are simply playing the wrong game. I occassionally play footballgames. I cant in ED. Does this mean ED is "not a sandbox" or does it mean I am in those moments playing the wrong game?

Complaining a waffle isn't food because it isn't a pancake is a bit silly, IMHO. Adding that waffle-fans lack the creativity to appreciate pancakes is even sillier. You want to build starbases, appoint politicians and save the world? Cool, but it has zero to do with ED.

It doesn't matter though, does it?

It is what it is... Which will hopefully improve.

Yeah, true. I just hope to get some guys stop misusing some terms.
Like not calling an AMRAAMs as rockets. APCs as tanks. Assault rifles as machine guns. Theme parks as sandboxes etc.

Indeed.

The problem is as usual that some people seem to need a handy label to pin on things - a label that then gets interpreted in a 100 different ways by different people whereupon you end up with the "MMO" arguments.

Instead of asking is it a "sandbox" and then giving someone's convoluted definition of what a "sandbox" is - that everyone will immediately disagree with.

Why not just ask what you really mean? In this case;

Does the game have inbuilt tools that allow you to make stuff?

To which the answer at the moment appears to be;

No.

I was promised that I can have a pancake, a waffle or just some flour, milk, eggs and a hot plate. And when it turned out there is no way to drink the milk, trash the flour and make an omelette, I was told that here is a waffle and use your imagination.

@OP: Where in official material does it claim Elite: Dangerous is a Sandbox game? As far as I know the only marketing claim is that it is Open World.

Technically though, Sandbox games cover a multitude of sins thus it would not necessarily be an abuse of the term to apply it to ED.

However, in general what it is called in terms of categorisation is irrelevant at the end of the day... It is an Elite type game.

There is nothing theme parky in ED.

Theme park: You travel through a specific path to show you everything the game has to offer.
Sandbox: Go anywhere, do whatever you want, no boundaries.

And we're back to making stuff up again. You were not promised the ability to build bases, colonize planets, appoint politicians or save galaxies. Those ideas are the product of a sandbox called "your brains".

If you want to imagine promises never made, randomly define terms than criticise a game because reality turns out to be different, go nuts.

Don't see the point in it though, so I'm out of this discussion.

Nice, you just proved yourself that ED is not a sandbox game and was not designed as one. Open world, yes, Sandbox no.

I don't care if ED was sandbox or theme park. Both can be highly fun on their own ways. Not like Themepark is bad and Sandbox is good. It is just weird to see that so many people don't exactly know what is what.

True. But we don't know if the theme park had a sandbox. :D

Theme parks can have small sandboxes. STO is declared as a theme park by both the players and the developers. But there is the Foundry in STO which is a nice small sandbox.

The problem ultimately is the nature of the poll you created... from the options available, Sandbox is certainly a closer fit than Theme Park (which I personally do not accept as a valid general classification in any case)... that is ultimately why some people will probably vote Sandbox... at the end of the day though the poll is meaningless.

Question is, what can you create or shape in ED?

We all have different opinions of what a sandbox or theme park is. Nothing wrong with that tbh. I'll even call it a Theme Box or a Sand Park. Most important is that we eventually get all the tools (either it be a bigger spade to fill the bigger buckets or whatever we might need) so the game really keeps evolving.

In the loosest terms, you can buy and configure your ship as you see fit and that could constitute building/shaping in the loosest sense of the terms. In any case, if the sole purpose of the poll is to bait an argument and pointlessly argue about something the game is not "officially" purported to be then it is probably achieving the goals... I have better things to do with my time though, thus I am done with this thread now.
