ED to get Deathmatch modes for PvP ??

Oh good, something new for the people who were opposed to the external camera to shift their attention to.

I don't have a problem with any of that (if it came to fruition). Many frustrated PvP'ers would have something to do that wouldn't involve messing up non PvP'ers games and yet allow both to stay happily in open mode.

Deathmatchgate would make offlinegate look like a day on the farm with grandma.

FDev are trolling the lot of you.

I hope I won't be frowned upon but.... my excitement levels are approaching maximum. I've thought a lot while playing... how much I'd love War Thunder style game modes as a wee distraction. High-octane, competitive, multiplayer, fun. What about "Capture the flag" in an asteroid field? Space ship battles for entertainment sounds great to me.

I wonder if it'll be under the Start options, possible a further set under Group play ?
Then anyone matched are placed in their own instance so it doesn't affect other players ?
Or a Conflict Zone style play ??

Just reading that Reddit thread and this comment really got my juices flowing:

dogfighting on live galactic television for credits? count me in!

Imagine being able to watch highly skilled commanders (or me) battle it out like gladiators for "fabulous prizes" on a big screen inside a station or something. A career as an Arena fighter etc. It all sounds amazing to me. I hope it's genuinely something being worked on.

If it's actually implemented as you describe it, it would be nothing short of an attraction like the coliseums of old. However given how many major things are implemented as originally described (none) I can't hope to expect an experience like that. Being given some nameless instance where death has no insurance cost is likely to be the most we'll see of it.

Haha no.

This is actually a very lazy way of developing a PvP system into the open world.

The reality, in my opinion, is that they don't know how they can do it.

So, they are throwing this PvP Arena into 1.3 (or whatever) hoping that they will fool players into thinking that there is now a PvP in this game but all the smart ones will know that this is just a way to buy time to create some real PvP. They are merely creating an illusion of a working feature that is completely fake, and I think FD is becoming really good at that.

A big part of the player base is completely against any kind of pvp action and they're being very vocal about it. Arenas are pretty much the only way pve players wont freak out. If you give more incentives to fight other players, people will freak out about griefing. The universe is so big that it's hard to find people to fight against in a consistent manner. If you make dedicated pvp zones, you're basically doing the same thing as an arena.

They can't add any sort of significant pvp feature that may interfere with the pve aspect of the game without creating an outrage. Arenas are not as good as open world pvp, but it would still be a very good start.

I'm a dreamer... My brain is in overdrive now thinking about it all. A giant "ball" you have to cargo scoop and drop in an "end zone" while your team mates protect you etc. Bah. Too much coffee.

Arena death matches are a damn good idea and IMHO should have been there from the start.

Some people just want to watch the world burn. Let them go burn it in an arena that doesn't affect the Elite universe.

i think you meant to say does not affect WOW universe.

There was a thread putting forward this kind of idea a while ago, shortly after launch if I remember correctly. There was a lot of nay-saying, foretelling of doom and the general sort of idiocy one would expect. But as I said there, I think it's a great idea that can only improve the game for all.

I'm not a PvPer, I trade and bounty hunt NPCs and the one time I did hit another commander it was by accident and I withdrew from the Nav Point to pay my fine. I don't want to ruin anyone's day or set them back on their path to their dream ship. But if there was an arena where one could go and have some fun with like-minded commanders without putting one's whole bundle on the line then that would be very welcome indeed and I'd like to take part for a bit of excitement.

For those of you who want PvP in the main game, it's good for you too. As it gives people a place to learn and find if they enjoy that sort of thing. Without putting their entire credit line in jeopardy (I would hope).

For those who want no PvP at all under any circumstances, well, you can avoid it entirely and hopefully it'll take some of the ne'er-do-wells away from wherever you are. Worst case scenario you still have solo.

When you also consider that an arena could be set up to use dedicated servers (no idea if it will be) you could have the perfect mix of quality entertainment with a really good space sim dog-fighting mechanic - which I feel is one of Elite's strengths.

I honestly think it could be the thing that saves Elite from the abyss.

So, instead of making pvp matter in the game itself, we're going to have some weird deathmatch instance that will a) have no impact on the game world itself b) take players out of the game itself c) take time from devs that could have been spent on something that's NOT world of tank in space?

Tell me i'm wrong. Please.

I'm not up on anything to do with spectator computer gaming, but is it possible that FD are trying to put something together that could be used in this way? Publicity like that must have helped StarCraft a bit.

I said it before and I'll say it again. People who like to care will not stop until the remaining of PvP in this game is demolished to pieces. On demand solo mode is not enough for them. They want it all.

I would fashion it as a holographic game that Commanders play for entertainment and training while their real selves are docked in station. This would have several advantages.

1. it's believable.
2. no-one would have to travel to specific places over terrific distances to take part.
3. you could use setups that you don't have in-game for real, though some arenas should only allow you to choose from what you do have.
4. it's a video game inside a video game which is very meta and cool and the younger people will like that.
5. it's extensible, who knows, the next holographic game could be FPS arena or whatever it is people want to do.. pod racing round planetary tracks, holo-bar pool tables, pro-celebrity naked darts, etc. the point being it would be faster to implement than a whole system to include for every planet in the real game.

Mh...i dont know if i would like it or not.
On one side, a "magical pvp zone that no one else can see" would be pretty boring.
On the other side, if it is implemented correctly, it could be fun.

It could be explained in a way where you enter a tournament in a restricted sector that you cant reach in another way. THEY bring you to it and they bring you back.
And you fight there for profit, to entertain yourself and the masses...
so why not?

IF FD decides to implement that in the future, i think i would not have a problem with it. why should i? it would not affect me or others who dont want to play it.
And if some players just want to blow eachother up without wasting millions of credits...why not?
They can still hunt and destroy in open. Its a thing that would not affect the game for others at all.

But still: its just a file that was found while datamining.
maybe it was just an internal experiment? who knows if it will ever make its way into the game.
