ED Tracker 2.9 (Friday 13th)

I must say after another recalibration i have no drift after 2 hours, dogfight gameplay is so much better with a headtracker.

My PC keeps power running to USB ports all the time so I suspect that heat has played a big part, head tracker has been powered for two days solid. My drift compensation is down to -0.05!

It really is a good bit of kit

My issue is resolved!

Brumster was kind enough to do some remote diagnostics with me and after some head scratching we found that the tracker did not like my USB3 ports.

The COM ports were fine but it would not detect an HID. Oh well one more for the knowledge base.

Thanks Brumster, repped! (virtual for now)

Windows 7 by any chance? Windows 8 has a real USB 3 stack instead of the hacked on one added to Windows 7 after release. I came across this with my ASIO audio interfaces which all work correctly under Windows 8 but wouldn't work when plugged in a USB 3 port under Windows 7!

Yup Win7

Would going through a cheapo USB 2.0 hub help matters?

Didn't help the audio interfaces as the issue is with the xHCI driver being a bolt-on and not integrated into Windows. If you plug in a hub to try to limit the device to USB 2 it's still using the same driver. The only way to get them to work is to disable xHCI in the BIOS so the ports only support UHCI but I didn't want to lose the speed advantage.

My USB 3 external hard drives never worked properly in windows 7 but I get full speed in windows 8.

I initially thought it was my cheapo hub that might be causing issues with my headset, turns out it was the USB3 ports causing all the issues.

Was this not a problem with some Intel chipset revisions?

I built a Win7 box back in December that seemed to work perfectly OK with a USB3.0 external HDD.

USB 3 is fine, Windows 7 drivers for USB 3 aren't. This is partly M$/Intel forcing you to upgrade!

I personally upgraded to Windows 8 before I was forced to and I, being a UNIX user and 40 years old, thought I'd hate it but it is so much better than Windows 7 as long as you don't try to live in the past. I tell everyone a shell is the correct way to do everything but I have moved with the times and sometimes just want to play a game with the least hassle and drivers for my new hardware!

Basically, if you want USB 3 to work get Windows 8/8.1!

You can't put the blame on just Windows 7 for this as I'm using my ED Tracker on a USB 3 port under it and I've never had an issue.

Not had any issues with devices not wanted to work on the USB 3 port over the USB 2 ones. Your problems could just down to the chipset used / drivers. Since my front ports are both USB 3 they are the first ones that get picked for any new device. If it helps I'm running a self built system based on an Asus motherboard.

It's a known issue with Windows 7 and I have come across it on a lot of computers all fixed by upgrading to windows 8 (xHCI didn't exist when windows 7 was released). At home most recently a Samsung Chronos laptop (which I bought as it still had a USB 2 port now not needed after upgrading to Windows 8) and two self built computers (most recent using a Maximus VI Impact).

Depending on your case your front USB ports might have a hub so aren't a valid test. Try a Pro audio interface :p

I had the misfortune of building computers as a job in the past... 20 minutes from a pile of boxes containing parts to a finished computer installing windows is no fun way to earn a living!

This is just a quick not to say a big

for the ED Tracker. I bought mine at LaveCon and have been using it now for a few days and it really enhances the immersion and game play.

You guys ought to do a KickStarter to get the device to the mass market. I'd back it.

On behalf or Rob, Dorian and myself - you're more than welcome and thanks for the support! Was great to meet you too....

I'm back from Win8.1. Never again. And I don't mean the Modern UI. Win8 killed an encrypted partition, claiming it for itself during installation when I specifically set it up to use an entirely different partition, including checking and double checking. It also didn't modify .wim files although the progress indicator led me to believe otherwise. If the tradeoff is USB3 not working properly in Win7, this is something I'll happily live with.

Waiting for Windows Threshold is what I'm doing, fearing for the worst.
