ED Vs. Eve Online

Dear All,

Firstly, I'm not part of the beta so any comments I make are purely down to what I have seen on YouTube and read.

I draw a great deal of parallels between ED and EO (Eve Online), rightly or wrongly. What I see in ED is a far more immersive edit of EO with regards to mining and PVP. What a shame the entry price of playing the beta is so high, perhaps a lesser amount may draw more EO players over but that's up to Fronter to decide.

Do we have any EO veterans playing the beta? I'd love to hear your comments.

The only thing ED has in common with Eve is that they are both set in space.

The retail price of ED is considerably cheaper than most AAA titles on the market today,Eve is a subscription game and will cost you a lot more in the long run.

There are Eve veterans here and I'm sure they will be glad to comment.

LIAR. They both begin with E.

To be honest as a veteran of both, they do have a lot in common, just the gameplay itself is different. Hell Elite was quoted several times as an influence on the original EVE.

Not that similar. ED is more like the original Elite, or Wing Commander: Privateer. EVE has many of the same concepts but the gameplay is very different.

biggest difference is:

Player driven market: (maybe ELite will get something more like that later - crafting and big haulers and industry - aswell as automated moon harvesting etc. - but its not in now)
Multiplayer Aspect: EVE has much bigger "battles" (more like dynamic chess parties - these arent real "battles" - in my eyes)
Ticking time: in EVE you have basically one update per second. Its more like chess than a "space fight" game, in Elite many many actions per millisecond..
Immersion: Elite you are a pilot!! You actually fly around. EVE is a space click adventure..

EVE is only an MMO-- that means you watch TV while playing and you chat with people 95% of the playtime.. Elite is a real game where you are engaged and immersed!

In my eyes its a little offensive to compare Elite with a thing like EVE.. I played EVE in 2005 - and later on - but never got really into the game and I tried hard..

The game play is certainly different that's for sure. ED, looks exciting and fresh and hopefully will be on my Xmas list!

Please don't get me wrong, I've been playing EO since 2007 and really enjoy the game but what I see in ED is a far greater immersiveness . Time will tell.

SALUTE Folks!

I joined EvE about 10 years ago. I started Elite back in 1984 at about 24 years old. I was in the Air Force then. That started my sickness... I got hooked on Elite, and computer gaming in general. So that is how I found EVE, and man I loved EVE! Right up until it became controlled... by, you name it, whoever formed the biggest blob to control others. End game? THEY WON, I QUIT. So, who loses? YOU DO. The company loses my money each month, and you no longer have a target. Good Bye.

SALUTE! and cya in the stars!

I've played EvE-O for almost 6 years. In ED, you are actually piloting your spaceship, in EVE you are just clicking on menus and buttons to do stuff, even in space combat.

I think both have their strengths and weaknesses. Eve Online has a strong social and strategic element. It is also lushly drawn and lavishly detailed. It creates a really believable, bustling universe.

Elite Dangerous has a beautiful flight mechanic and immersive quality. It creates a believable sense of being in space. But it is still fairly basic in terms of economy and strategy. The social aspect still needs a lot of development. All that will come. It took Eve a decade and half a million players to achieve the level of detail it has now. Elite Dangerous hasn't been launched yet.

No ED is actually not like EO.

ED has instances. Not only that but a vast majority of players are segregated into groups or solo. So, even if you get 20 some ppl with good connections you will not get the interaction you get with Eve.

Example: players can just log off, from npc or pc interaction. Middle of combat. No penalty. ED is a single player game.

There will be no border wars, no trade infiltration/manipulation of note, no intrigue, plotting, or politics. No wings of pilots seeking to change borders or defend their own, no cadres of nihilistic villains to defend against. No legitimate piracy or greifing (both ends of the spectrum) to police or fight against. No territory to defend, no inter-PC connections of note. You can't even hire someone to disrupt your competitions trade lanes because they play solo.

Instead this is the game of carebears personified. Elite:Mildly Interesting Pretty Space "Sim"

In short enjoy the flight mechanics (you better) and graphics because otherwise you are playing in a sterile "universe". I like it, it's cool but not what was advertised and ppl should realize what they are getting.

It will be my off time when I'm not actually doing something in another game. Basically the game that was touted to hold a "lasting and pervasive universe" meant "watch your cr's grow to then... I dunno get bigger shoulder pads?".

I've said this in a few threads. I do love that in other games when PvPers basically rule the roost they strut around the place. In ED the wings are definitely clipped and they cry 'ooh poor me'...

You are placing a pre-determined template on me that indicates you spew without reading. Notice I mentioned policing, I like hunting off the chain pvper's. I don't want to "rule the roost" I want to help ppl make an interesting game.

Interesting studies have shown that self indentified "peacefull PVE'rs" are most likely to indulge in ad hominems, slander and reverse elitism. Their inability to come to terms with their self-inadequacies drive them to attack those they deem attacking them. When others are simply doing their business unaffected by the crippling inadequacies that drive others affected to lash out.
