ED Wont load in VR HMD

As the title suggests, i am unable to get the game to load in VR. More to the point, cant get it to load in the HMD. It loads on the monitor, but not in HMD. I have tried everything i can think of. disabling SLi, resizing res output to 1280x768, manually starting steam VR then loading the game, rebooting pc a dozen times.
I can still play the game fine because its behaving as if it is working on the monitor. Its just refusing to show in the hmd. I am spending more time lately just getting this thing to load than what i am actually playing it and it is rather annoying.
When i came back to the game about 2 weeks ago, i had to contact FD just to get help in getting it going then because of .NET.
I got it going with their help, but then ran into this issue and all he could tell me was disable SLi. which it was at the time. Now, it just dont want to play.
Anyone know how i might be able to get this going please? And without having to rinse and repeat everytime i want to play or should i just give up and bench the game til they fix it?

Edit : Forgot to mention, i play on the rift, through steam, but cant see that making any difference
i also forgot to mention thatr it was working fine earlier today. But for some strange twilight reason, when i exited the game because of going to do other things, then came back to it a few hours later or whatever, it decides, no, i dont want to play. Nothing was altered either except for keybinds. No graphics or anything were altered, so it certainly has me beat as to why one moment it loads and the next it dont

sorry don't own a vr but I will tell you this never start the game without all your usual devices(hotas, joypad, vr etc) you use to play the game pugged in and recognised by windows first
and if you do manage to forget a controller or device DO NOT ENTER THE CONTROL SECTION of the game were you bind just quit the game plug in all your devices and restart it

read this to understand why https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...i-enter-the-controls-tab.507856/#post-7718770 (and a prevention fix when binds and devices are sorted)
as your device pids are also bind related I think you corrupted your bind file somehow would be my guess

No idea about Steam VR (yet - may change, I'm about to start another thread), but I always play ED together with Oculus Home.
So, for me:
  • set ED to HMD (if your bindings somehow got lost, ED may also have lost the HMD setting for the graphics)
  • have Oculus Home running
  • fire up ED, and it magically takes over the Rift.

My best gues would be that the same event that lead to you losing the bindings also lost your video settings, and ED is reverted to 3D off.

Thank you to both of you for wanting to try to help me with this issue. Although it was nothing to do with keybinds, you did however, give me other ideas i could try to find out why it was doing this to me.
I did check my HMD 3d settings, it was on. So it wasnt that.
So, after renaming my binds files, etc, it still didnt want to load in the HMD.
So, i thought, maybe its to do with graphics options or settings. So i went to the same game folder, C:\Users\USER NAME\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics.
So instead of selecting the "Bindings" folder under "Options" in that above lijnk, i went to the "Graphics" folder. I opened up "DisplaySettings" in Notepad first, but couldnt see anything wrong with it. But to try it, i removed it from the folder and then hit "Play" and then "In VR" on Steam, waited for it to load, to find it had no affect.
So i deleted the newly created "DisplaySettings" file in the folder after exiting the game, and moved the original back in there from the desktop.
I then looked at the "GraphicsConfigurationOverride" file, but saw thats to do with the HUD ingame so i didnt bother to test that one.
I then looked at the "StartPreset" file, but couldnt see that one being an issue, but kept an open mind on it in case nothing else worked.
Then i looked at the "Settings" file. Again, i couldnt see anything wrong with it, but i tried it anyway. So i moved it to the desktop, so the game would create a new file in the game folder, and re-launched the game again in VR. This time, it loaded up in the HMD.
So, im not sure what changed in the file. I did compare the old with the new, there was a couple of small differences, but nothing that stood out that would could cause such an error in not wanting to display in the HMD.
To make sure it was going to keep launching the game, i exited it, and re-launched it, to find, it wont load again. But this time, not even moving the above files to the desktop would get it launch. Its just being an absolute pain in the you know what to solve this issue.
I did submit a ticket last night to FD and still waiting to hear back.

Edit : I just removed all the files in the graphics folder to the desktop, and game loaded in HMD again. So, i dont know whats going on with the game. But it shouldnt be doing this. I should be able to choose the graphics setup i want to use ingame and leave it. But clearly, its not that simple!

Edit 2: After more testing i am coming to realize that its going to be random in that it will either let me play in VR or it wont. Seems the only way i can get it to work SOMETIMES is keep on moving ALL the files in the graphics folder to desktop or delete them, to get the game to put in new ones by force. But, as i have learned, it doesnt always work and still wont let me play in VR. This game is so broken i cant even play it now. :( Very disappointed

I also own a Rift and play ED in VR I always "fire up" Oculus Home" fisrt, then select "Play" via Steam. I always get a selection-window, where I'm asked wich version of Elite I want to play (Elite, Elite: Horizons, Elite via VR). Works like a charme for me.

Rift CV1, 1060Ti, Ryzen 3600X

@STRONTIUM DOG Sorry, i meant that it was random in the way it was letting me play after i tried a fix, then after reloading the game it wasnt letting me play in vr again. I probably should have stipulated that part. But i dont think it would be voltage drop because oculus home is loading up just fine. Im just wondering about installing the oculus version without uninstalling steams version just to try it for now, but dont know how the pc would react where theres 2 copies of on the pc. I can install it on a different drive to steams version. Just dont know if it'd make any difference or not. Or even if i uninstall steams version and install Oculus version and see what happens. Just a lot of stuffing around downloading again would be my main complaint about that tho lol.

@Eliza Yeah thats how i normally load it up too. Never had a issue with it til this past couple of weeks when i made a comeback....Guess ED dont want me back lol

@Faded Glory Yeah, thats sets right. So i know its not that, but thanks for the tip in case i missed it :)

All good. Thanks for trying tho :)
Im going to try a fresh intstall, but thinkin i will go with Oculus install this time. Then it will rule out SteamVR being the cause if it still does this after the fresh install, but i will be praying it wont do it and it will be fixed :)

Just going to say you don't need to launch the game from Oculus, you can run it straight from the FD launcher. The only advantage that you get is a slightly better integration if you use Oculus Dash.

I have played in VR (with a Rift) for a couple of years now and do so straight from the FD launcher, no issues at all. That said, don't know whether you can swap your steam install to a native FD one, or even an Oculus one, because you certainly don't want to have to buy the game again.

Hopefully support will be able to help you out, and as the others have said, sorry you are having these problems.

I've bought the "steam edition", but I also got an oculus redeem code from FDev. So now I can choose between ALL option to get "into the cockpit". Thr only reason I go through steam is, to show off the great views to my mates at work.

Thanks, I didn't know that, so that will at least give the OP the chance to try running it through Oculus by redeeming the code.

...That said, don't know whether you can swap your steam install to a native FD one...

There was a deadline - IIRC end of April this year (if you need the exact date, I can check the threads in the Newcomers Forum - ISTR to have read it there). If you bought your game before that deadline, you can swap between Steam and FD install (contact support for the FD key). If you bought a Steam version after that, you're stuck with it.

Thanks for the replies people :)
Yeah, i purchased ED not long before i joined the forums i think it was. So, about 2016 going by my profile on here. I thought it was 2014 or something i bought the game...ANYWAY lol, so got the game from FD site, which included Oculus, Steam and FD versions.
So that night, i got the Oculus version started in downloading, then went to bed. Got up next morning and tried the game out, game loads just fine now. So, im not sure if it was Steam VR at fault,(which, since their latest update is when i started having issues. But it could still be coincidence.), or if there was an issue with Oculus and SteamVR not communicating properly for me or if it was just my game at fault and needed a fresh install anyway. Im sort of leaning towards the latter simply because i havent seen anyone else posting of similar issues. If i did see other posts, well, that would rule out my game client being at fault i would think :)
Again, thanks for tryin to help guys, much appreciated. At least i can finally load the game up with out hassles :)

EDIT : I would have preferred it to stay in Steam, but, who knows i may just try to redownload it again at some point. At the moment, not worried. Its not like there's achievements on Steam :). I realize i could have just had the FD launcher itself instead of worrying about steam or oculus, but, i like to track how long i been playing for :)
