EDTracker finally arrived - disorienting at first...

So, I've finally decided to give head tracking a shot. So I've gone for an EDTracker and spent yesterday mounting it to my headphones and getting MacGyver'ing the casing to fit my USB cable properly (the USB connector was "too fat" for the casing).

Anyway, I started ED and had a short sortie to the NavBeacon. It takes some serious getting used to! Camera drifts about a bit and sometimes I end up looking instead of steering, etc.

But it really adds immersion and intuitive control of the POV and following an opponent on screen is much easier than using the old POV-hat (which got neglected during combat). Targeting is difficult, because the targeting HUD selects what's in front of me, and fine control is not there yet.

I've definately lost some flying proficiency. I'm sure it will come back after I'm used to this, I'm just hoping that it won't take too long.

Any good recommendations for configuring EDTracker? Linear vs Expo, Deadzones, smoothing, etc? Any relation to Field of View setting on a 1920x1080 monitor?

This is my config since the day I got it. I have a 27' 1920x1080 monitor and it's roughly 50cm away from my eyes.
Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. So you'll have to find out by yourself what works.

I have mine on linear, and it does drift a bit but as long as my room is roughly the same temperature as it was when I originally calibrated it, it's fine. Just a tip though, you can set it to auto-centre (soft/medium/hard) periodically, but I think it only does this when the GUI is minimised (to the system tray) i.e. it wont auto-centre if you have the GUI window open. Minimise it just before you start ED.

I couldn't imagine playing without head tracking now, it amazing, especially in combat.

I have also just started using the head tracker with the track clip pro. Tis great, I'm loving it.

One question, I don't use head phones, has anyone come up with a decent alternative to clipping it onto a pair of headphones?

Not sure what's causing your drift, this is hte vid I made the day I got mine:

Any movement is actually caused by me moving, the camera's not moving independently...typing this one thing springs to mind.

I had a small issue a while ago with calibration. I re-did the test where you move the tracker around on its axis, but in different directions, this fix the small amount of drift I had. No issues since.

Good luck :)

I suppose "drift" was an incorrect way to express myself. I'm not experiencing independent drift in a technical sense, just the way it reacts to small, unwanted movement of my head makes me feel that the POV drifts independently to my own input.

I already added some smoothing to decrease jitter. I may have some time in the weekend to spend some time getting acquainted with it. I find it easy to follow the movement of my target, but it's a bit harder to get it back to center. Just not used to it yet, combined with not having fine tuned the config, more than anything else I think.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

As someone already posted - use OpenTrack, and configure that.

You can tweak sensitivity as well as remove minor twitches caused by minor involuntary head movements (which still get picked up by EDtracker).

EDIT: Remember that, if using OpenTrack, you want a linear 1x setting in EDtracker config, and let OpenTrack handle all calibrations and whatnots.

Here is what I did. No clip involved ... I just attached Velcro fasteners to the underside of the EDTracker and to the bill of the cap, for easy removal if necessary:

It does take a little getting used to, but once you've built up the "muscle memory" you'll freak out when all of a sudden you don't have it :)

Your combat effectiveness in turnfights will be greatly improved but you'll also come to appreciate the finer points of head track in ED... such as
- being able to look at a target or nav point off-centre from the screen, and target it with "target under crosshairs" button
- lining up with the station slot / pad via a nice, fast, steady curved approach into the station
- Navigating round large celestial objects
- Positioning yourself at speed round asteroids
- Flying in formation and being able to check your 9/3 with your wingmen... :)
- Checking above you on launch from a pad
