Efficient way to backtrack? um..asking for a friend

right, so, this is dumb considering my main account :/

I've gotten my alt into a pickle. 15 ly range and tried to get to gnosis, gave up after 300 odd jumps the night before the departure (phew, in hindsight :)), then tried to head to the Orion Nebula Tourist Centre.....again, got a bit stuck.

The low range is making me seeming go in circles - very limited time avail doesn't help of course. anyways....have EDD and EDSM....

Is there a way to find the most efficient backtrack? Manually going back jump by jump is a pain, especially if it is somewhat in circles. Oh.....account is non-horizons so no boost materials either :/

EDD router just spits me out a bunch of waypoints interspersed with actual system names -and a couple of systems that have permit locks :(
spansh reckons 10 jumps to a neutron - In game plotter says 33 to not quite get there (won't plot).

So I've 3 choices...
1) Backtrack bit by bit
2) Spend the next few months poking around in spare time - the main comes back from DECE soon so I guess I don't *need* the alt in the bubble
3) Eat humble pie and ask for help......here I am :)

I'm *hoping* there's maybe a way to look at the 3d plot, and pick a system from there that will hopefully route. Darn permit zone is a nightmare...
*OR* EDD would have this magical option to restrict the routing to jumps I already made - and use clever maths to determine the most efficient route so I can just paste stuff into Gal map. My alt is lazy :/

No idea if it'll help you much, but the in-game galaxy map does have a "visited systems" filter, which you can even use to restrict the plotter.

Once you get past the maze of permit-locked sectors, you should be able to plot towards the bubble in one fell swoop. Can you give us what system you're in? We can have a peek in the game to figure what part of a permit lock you need to avoid.

If you were heading to the gnosis, I'd wager you just need to skirt around the Col 70 sector...

I'd open EDD's 3D map and eyeball suitably positioned systems as waypoints, which can then be fed into the ED route planner. If the route doesn't plot, select a different/closer system as waypoint. I see no easier way to do this (except you want to backtrack your EDD history step-by-step).

yes -not being able to 'see' the permit area isn't helping. Even plotting something 60 or 70 ly away seems to result in 30 jumps to get there. currently Trapezium Sector CG-X d1-15.

aah yes, I forgot about that....can take a peek

If I understood your post correctly...
You can change the filter settings in the galaxy map menu to "systems visited" to display any systems you've been to. If you've been following a specific route to your current location and wish to get back then the route you've been traveling should show under this filter setting.
Note: I'm not sure if auto-plot will work under this filter setting. Worst case scenario is, you'll need to manually navigate along your previous route.

I'm going to use this method to get back to the bubble after my expedition to Sag A (and maybe checkout Colonia) using the Neutron Star Highway (NS). I was running out of bookmarks for NSs and need to find a way to back-track, as well, and found this method.

I Hope this helps, CMDR!

Trapezium sector... I think I see what the trouble is! You're -inside- the tunnel of small nebulae that carves a path through the big Col 70 permit-locked sector. (Someone please confirm, I'm not near the game, I just work from memory - there's a trapezium nebula in there)

Try this: Make a path to the witch head nebula, that's the 'entrance to the tunnel'. If you can reach it, you can just go 100ly or so further away from barnard's loop, and you'll have a clean straight line towards the bubble.

Cmdr useless got out :D

Combination of the blue dots in game and the 3d map of EDD - I hadn't used in ages...literally years and not realised that right clicking a system would gimme the name. It also took me 10 mins turning stuff off and the stars back to white to be able to find my teeny tiny journey trail.
Anyways....2nd star to the right and keep going straight till morning...

reps all round...even Mr not particularly helpful
