I like this list, it has most difficult matching so far. I had to ponder choices for some time.
Spectacled Bear: It would much more of a straightforward choice anytime earlier. But I grew to really like the ABB. Specially its glacial skin. But Spectacled just has more going for it. Even when we ignore SA representation.
Howler Monkey: Another really tough match up. I choose Howler for obvious lack of tailed monkeys and SA animals. But maybe if we already had, say Spider Monkey, Baboon would be preferred.
Coatimundi: I really grew out of love with Tree Kangaroo as the time went by. I even removed it from my wishlist. I feel like I wanted it more due to lack of Aussie animals and community demand. Once my appetite for Australia was sated (after Oceania) I realised I don't really need the Tree Roo in the game. So this was an easy choice.
Ocelot: Even easier choice. Never harbored any special love for Pallas Cat. While Ocelot is a glaring omission that can't be replaced, in at least two of my long going projects
Greater Rhea: I mean I would choose Darwin's if it were to the animal I need for my parks, but Greater will also do. It comes down to habitat, and African jungle is taken care of nicely
Pelican (Dalmatian): Pelican is a steady want of mine that never dipped. Dalmatian ones are local to my country and essential zoo animals around here. They're also bih enough to carry around their own wight as single habitat animal. But I would be lying If I said it was an easy choice. Certainly some duck species fare better in my books than some Pelican species
Walrus: You're toying with my Arctic feelings here. Walrus ultimately has more use, while Musk Ox would be exclusive to only coldest of environments. But even tho, both are very cool, and right in my alley, none of them are on my wishlist and are animals I could live without
Markhor: Either-or in the end, my cold bias makes the decision here, but wouldn't be mad with Blackbuck
Spider Monkey: I would love the inclusion of GSNM just for the laughs, but in real comparison it sadly pales to so much of other species. Also Spider Monkey is easily my #1 monkey to get, so any other looses this mathcup, even other SA species
Rock Hyrax: Hyraxes happend to be one of my favorite Old World animals still missing in game, so unfortunate match up for Mara. I understand the region and biome Mara represents, but personally Hyrax all day, every day
Otter (Eurasian): Eurasian Otter has versatility no Otter has, and while not my favorite (Sea Otter wasn't an option) it beats African Civet easily
Serval: Could live without both, but Serval is better pick for a zoo animal and is more striking in appearance
Giraffe (second species): I guess, I mean I'm good without any new Giraffes/Zebras, but let's say Giraffe, their patterns in-between subspecies offer more (imo)
Elk: Easy. Thar not the most inspiring animal to me, while Elk brings that "common deer" niche for NA (Both Reindeer and Moose have their unique quirks). Also they are beautiful and so are their calls
Neither: I just wouldn't use neither Ferret nor another Badger, even tho I am aware of Honey's popularity
Neither: Actually it feels a bit refreshing to not choose twice in a row after some tough choices. But yeah, neither spark interest with me
Gelada: Here's a "revenge" for Spider Monkey/Baboon match up. Gelada also has so much going for it, that is an easy pick
Brazilian Porcupine: Not only do I not need any more lemurs, I specifically don't need highly specialized versions of them that need specific habitats. Porcupine is pretty cool on the other hand
Asiatic Lion: I was gonna write "Neither" again, but if they could "up" the model with Asiatic one, count me in
Numbat: To cool to miss out on
Edit: I excluded Sea Otter from temperate Otter choice because I thought it doesn't count. But after seeing more than one person going for it I'm rethinking my idea of temperate.
Are Sea Otters considered Temeprate species? Always had them in mind as cold seas/borderline Arctic animals
