Community Event / Creation Elite 30 Years - Elite review: Crash ZX Spectrum Magazine (Nov 1985)

While in my parents loft looking for my original copy of Elite for the ZX Spectrum I found a Crash magazine from November 1985 with their review of the game. I thought commanders old and new might be interested to see it, as personally I love old magazines (it's a shame the images don't smell of the magazine which itself hasn't seen the light of day for nearly 30 years). I also remember fondly Oli Frey's cover artwork for Crash.

When could you buy a computer magazine for 95p! Yep, 1985

Apologies for the rather large 300dpi scans.

Still have my complete collection of Your Spectrum and an almost complete set of Your Sinclair right up until it went a bit pants and WH Smiths dropped it from the shelves, boo! ... lots of Sinclair User, Crash, and almost all off the Zero magazines that superseded YS in the age of Atari/Amiga/PC... again up until that got dropped. Most PC Format too
Decided to part with my 90's car magazines to save space when bought a new house with the missus, but this unashamed geek is holding on to his retro tech magazines!!! if only to preserve all those hilarious 80's mullet & knitted jumper adverts that fill them! :D

(still have all the retro tech & games too!)

Don't have me Spectrum mags anymore (very sadly they had to go due to wife's "storage space issues" (yes I did divorce her eventually!))-but still got my copy of Elite ( and lots of other games) and 2 ZX Specrums-one a "+"-and an Amiga 500 and games-including "Elite"-and a "Crash ZX Spectrum T-shirt I won (unworn))

Unfortunately I found the poster was missing from the game box. Everything else was there. I fear I probably stuck it on the wall back then.

Although I left the Speccy in the loft I'd actually like to get it and see if the tape still works. And it'd be good to experience the rubber keys again!

Oh it should still work, spectrums were incredibly reliable if looked after reasonably - the only weak points were power socket (no reset button) and keyboard membrane. (less reliable in the Spectrum+). Cassettes were rugged too, provided they were stored vertically and "exercised" an fully rewound to repack the tape once every couple of months. This was only an issue with C60 upwards.

I had a third party power switch which plugged into the Speccy and you plugged the power lead into that. It's like a triangular shape with a rocker switch on it. Quite neat.

I had to replace the membrane once as it had one or more cracked tracks.

My tapes were never exercised, they were just abused! I remember holding Play part way down when rewinding so I could hear where the tape was  Stored vertically? Not randomly in a bin liner like mine?!
I was actually a bit OCD with audio tapes; BASF CR-E II 90 only, and I only gave myself one shot at recording from a record. I couldn't possibly record over recorded tape!! There was something wonderful about cracking open a virgin cassette.

Sorry, going OT now. Just don't start me off on nostalgia..

Is it weird that I remember the cover of that mag as if it came out yesterday?
I say that because the amount of pc mags I bought would have filled a skip twice over.
I also had the ability to know which game was loading on my speccy just by the sound of the screen that was loading. It was my version of reading the matrix. :D

Memories....

Ah, those were the days. I think I bought that mag (to be honest, there weren't many around at the time). Your post also brought back memories of dialogues from "The Hobbit", for example:

(Me) TELL THORIN UNLESS HE STOPS SINGING ABOUT GOLD I'LL RIP HIS B***S OFF

(Computer response) I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE WORD "TELL"

...and so on.

See you around the galaxy, my friend

Bloody hell that brings back memories.

You wait.
Time Passes.
Thorin sings a song about gold.
