Elite 4k rig at 60fps | warning for others

I am now running an Acer xb280hk 4k with an Asus 970 OC, and everything works smoothly, highly recommend this set up. Steady 60 fps, in stations can drop to 38fps, aa and blur set to off (not needed), no stuttering at all even in stations, so you wouldn't know that the fps is lower there, this may be because of the G-sync. Altogether as smooth as the gtx770 it replaced.

I run the same monitor with an Asus 980 Strix (980 with a 10% factory overclock).
Solid 60 FPS outside stations and about 55 FPS inside stations. Only the steam/smoke effect in the hangar causes a slowdown to about 45FPS on occasion but it's still smooth due to GSync and... it's just the hangar lift so who cares?

I use maximum settings apart from AA which isn't needed (as above).

4k is absolutely stunning to look at. Nothing else looks as sharp and has the graphical detail to make it really work. I considered multiple monitors but there didn't seem much point with OR CV1 round the corner.

AMD? no ta, my house is warm already :)

I doubt it. OR is a toy with reduced resolution. Not to mention it simply looks with a grown man gaming with that "headcage" on.

Have you tried it? True, 1080p is too small a res at the minute, but only just. As for the headcage, I personally am quite comfortable in my own skin... In time, I'm sure you will be too ;)

I dont get a drop in framerate with my 4k system, pretty sure it isn't immature tech. Dont forget that playing on three 1080p screens is almost as strenuous, and people have been achieving that for years.

For the record, I'm running 2 980gtx in SLI, that just about acheives the 75fps required for low persitence mode in the Rift, but drops significantly in stations unfortunately. 3x 970's might crack it, tho! Non rift play is 60 fps +

Congrats on your 4k build?

for me 4K is an immature technology right now. The IQ is exception, but with such a huge penalty in framerate, I just don't think it's worth spending out that kind of cash for 4k. I love my ED rig:
- i7 3770k @ 4.6ghz
- 16gb ram
- 2 - EVGA 780TI-SCs (SLI)
- SSD storage
- Yamakasi Sparta 30" IPS monitor (Xmas gift)
- Saitek pro combat rudders
- Thrustmaster Warthog stick/throttle
- Corsair m65 mouse
- Corsair keyboard
- Titanium HD Sound

With that rig you could easily run E: D in 4K.
Sell the monitor and get a Philips BDM4065UC. You will not be dissapointed. I used a Dell U3011 IPS monitor before the Philips. I'm not going back to it ;)

Just remember the 3rd card scales really badly in most cases and often isn't even supported.

That's why many of us are waiting on CV1.

Why end there? Grown men playing with joysticks looks to many I bet. If you're a gamer you might as well be in for a penny, in for a pound.

Or be really lucky and get yourself a gamer girl like I did. ;) Though to be fair she did say she'd draw the line at me strapping a box to my head for EDtracker so....

I thought I'd chime in here. My SO gave me a Phantom case and a X99 delux for birthday Xmas, so I'm going to stick a pair of gigabyte 980s in it. At the moment I run a pair of thunderbolt monitors (Mac setup) but I'm unsure they will work, despite asking ASUS, so I'm thinking- 3 $200 1080 or one 1440.

Does anyone have ideas about monitors?

(The GPUs will be used for work BTW!)

I just bought a 27' 1080p monitor (currently using 22'@1680*1050), because I don't care about resolution as much as about fluidity, and I don't want to upscale games because on modern monitors upscaling looks disgusting. I remember fondly my old CRT monitors which could display any resolution below their max and provide a clean picture. I'm sure 27'@1080p will be perfect for me.

Once I get the Rift and I want to change my monitor, I'll see about buying a monitor which has the same GPU requirements as the headset.

With two 980s you should jump right in at 4K. The "investment" will last longer that way. ;)
Philips is not going to sell the BDM4065UC in North America, but there are more 40 inch 4K monitors on the way...

Yes, I've tried the OR. It's cool, don't get me wrong. I dont just see spending a ton more money for less image resolution, but I can certainly understand why many consider the tradeoff worthwhile. I just upgraded my display from a 27 to a 30 and I'm happy with my setup. While I would love a 3 monitor solution, Just not at the point where I want to purchase 2 monitors and a 3rd 780 GTX SC. At least for now.

Thanx for sharing this gem! The specs are impressive. I'm going to keep any eye on this one and others, I want to wait another year to give the technology more time to mature, price and performance to improve. My beautiful 30" ips panel is 400 on Amazon (cheaper on Ebay).
