GoPro is fun, but even with the extended battery the duration is poor. I'm about halfway on my way back from Indianapolis, and battery is already dead

What sort of recoring times are you getting?
I get around 2 hours

An hour at 1080 60fps uses up both batteries, SD card is on the approved list.

Why are you running at 60fps? You will only need those high frame rates if you intend to slow the footage down.
Drop the frame rate and see if increases your recording duration.
