Elite boring?

Meaningful progression, that's the thing this game is missing. Kinda pointless to get new ships since you end up doing same things over and over again anyway, be it trading or bounty hunting. Hell even navy ranks gets you nothing else than new ships which you can use to repeat the things you did with the previous ships. Getting a DK2, HOTAS, your girl/boyfriend to play with you etc. won't change that fact. I have high hopes for this game but it's still currently a decent back bone to a space sim. I'm having fun, that's what matters. But it's pointless to say that this game has craploads of content and progression and whatnot since it clearly doesn't have it, yet.

This brings up some interesting questions about how we all feel about the virtual world vs the physical one

I bought a new motorbike a few years ago, this was progression, after 35 years of bike
ownership it was the first new one i'd bought. It still had 2 wheels like my other ones but I
was excited about it as it was new, had new features and looked great (triumph explorer 1200). Being
british it of course corroded without delay and leaked a little oil from the cyl head.

Maybe its just me but virtual stuff I also feel the same about , but not as strongly. I was
excited when I got my Python but then the running costs were a bit of a shock however
I wanted it, I saved up and got it and had a blast playing around with it.

This was the first computer game I ever played : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4ZqcPTYO4Q
Nightmare park on a Commodore 8K PET. With only ascii "graphics" it was my 14yo
imagination that made me play it for 6 months until my school was gifted an apple IIc
with game paddles by mr jobs.

Meaningful progression is a very personal thing im currently at Combat:Novice,Trade:Broker(10m
away from next) and Explorer:Scout .... but more than any of that the sights ive seen and
looked at in our solar system in me being able to jump there and look around. But if anstronomy isnt
your thing I can understand why this doesnt appeal.

However boring (and I find it boring sometimes as ive played too much) we feel it
is we have to say theres nothing like it out there so for all of its flaws its got
huge potential and is unique.

Currently I have bored myself to death re-grinding 30m I lost (long fing story) in
my lakon-9. A money press at one end of the scale and a horrendous shopping center
sized ship at the other. This weekend I need something new so im giving mining
a go. Im also going to get back into combat and outfit a little cobra III with sharp
teeth.

This game is a long way from nightmare park and indeed the original elite, which i
also played to OCD levels .

hth - theres a lot of content coming this year and your high hopes will start to
be delivered on im sure.

Last night I interdicted a player pirate in his Python chasing a trader around Lave in super cruise. He had around 2 million bounty. We dulled for a while but ultimately he blasted my canopy open but I got back to Lave station alive.

On Wednesday I decked my Cobra out for long range exploration. I headed out 500 or so LY to the Coalsack nebula and scanned a few water worlds. In amongst the thousands of dully named stars in the dark region I saw an Adder piloted by a commander called Steve. Over the comms I enquired as to how his exploring was going?

"Alwight?" says Steve before he hits the Jump button.

On my way back to civilised space I make a mistake and take a route through some brown dwarfs. My tank is empty and I have to roll the dice to make that one last jump hoping to get a scoopable star. I hit the jump button and I'm relieved to see a massive orange/white sun in front of me. I bask in it's warmth and head home.

Occasionally I get mad at this game, sometimes I find myself grinding for credits doing the most simple silly thing...but most days I do stuff no other game offers me... I always come back for more.

THIS!

The game needs some story line that actually makes people want to do something and for a reason.

And not THIS. If you don't want to do the things in Elite already for no reason, then I don't see what a flimsy context is going to add. And it will be a flimsy context, seeing as FD coming up with a few hundred thousand compelling contexts (to save us doing it ourselves) is an impossible task.

Which doesn't mean that Elite Dangerous is boring. Just don't force yourself to play something you don't like. Life's too short for that.

Totally THIS!

Because THAT is kinda fun.. But even that is starting to get boring. But hey ... Space is a valid career choice!

And also completely and utterly THIS! Space is an entirely valid career choice, and unlike others on this forum, I vehemently defend your right to it!

I think the issue with a lot of players is they don't set themselves any goals but expect the same to set them.

A lot of people were expecting the game to have A-Z story book where they need to complete but when they play it feels empty, lonely and makes them feel very isolated.

For me and probably a lot of the older gamers it quiet refreshing to be a speck in the universe where were at most a nobody. :D

Remember as well this game has been created by a team of Brits.

We have a very different way of thinking, playing and enjoying ourselves. (well exclude the old cunning use of flag's)

To be blunt this may not be the game a lot of people thought it was. But to those who get it. It's absolutely brilliant.

Yes its a bit bare bones but the basic structure is there and what we have at the moment is amazing. So any future expansions will just make it get better

I guess some people get Elite, and some people don't.

The guy in this video DOES get it.

Notice he's not obsessed with grinding to the biggest ship, or racing through the ranks....he's just making his own story and having fun doing it:

Freudian Slip due to thread title?

I've heard lot of people say "theres no game".....
And you know what. If this was just purely a galaxy simulator I'd still play it.....because its a galaxy simulator.

When i see a player come here and post:
I have been to all 400 billion systems explored them all... and then say what you said i will take him serious but not before that.

You will never see such a post... unless it's a lie.
Count this... 400.000.000.000 x (say) 1 minute per system = 761 035 years

All the best games are bad games.

You will never find me crushing any kind of candy.. but i'll fly around in spaceships doing very little all night.

Sorry it's not the instant action game that you hoped for.

Elite is and always will be a space simulator. With 400 billion star systems to explore, I don't know why you're saying no real exploration. You can explore more in this game than any other game.

The game has never been about progression/ stat increases/ level gating or any other theme-park like MMO's. It's a sandbox. You do what you want, when you want, because you can.

If your sole purpose is trying to get the biggest and baddest ships in the quickest time possible, then you will have a boring time.

I love elite, but lets not sugar coat it too much. There is a great core but the game does need more fleshing out. The AI is pretty bad, so combat quickly loses its challenge. I've personally gone to gimping myself in an eagle with two beams for fun there. Trading is good to a point but not enough missions and you can only go A-B so many times. Exploration is interesting but again to a point.

The stations are almost all identical, the ships are all almost identical, the missions are all almost identical.

If someone plays the game an hour or two and says its boring, they are boring people and we can laugh at them. If they play a month or two and say its boring, I can understand. Last night I had a bit of it myself.

Who cares, play or don't play. What's the purpose of this thread? To sway those of us who like the game to not like it? Or to have comments in the thread convince the op to keep playing? When m bored with something I move on, I don't create pointless threads on forums, however to each his own... I guess.

I don't think that easy to kill single 1 vs 1 NPCs is a sign of "bad AI". The AI actually varies and has actually gone through a phase of being quite harsh during Alpha/Beta. The space dredge you come across isn't supposed to be very good, they are lone pilots not part of the Elite federation and usually attack by themselves. It should be tough when you encounter multiple enemies and they actually do work together (especially noticeable in combat zones when the AI routinely calls for help when you chase one of them out of the pack and his buddies close in to help). If you want a challenge, fly into a war zone and pick the wrong side or play the incursion mission scenario which demonstrated how tough they could be.

Frontier are going to be working on more set pieces which will doubtlessly include more ways to be overwhelmed by enemy. It will be interesting to see what they come up with regarding Thargoids :)

Same here , this game is really boring , nice but boring not much to do except :
-bounty hunting and when you by mistake shoot someone around , the whole cops in the place want you dead..so bounty hunting is a real crap.
-exploration is boring i like when i found lost cans of palladium and i hate when i receive bounty for taking them as they weren't belonging to ANYONE!and this mechanic is the same when you bash a "wanted" guy who release his load of cans .
Today just found in MK3 some Platinium and planed to sell them in COndivitch Walter port on black market...cool now i have more 200 k amend to pay !!! selling the stuff doesn't even cover the price of the bill ! How the cops could consider the thing is stolen as it was in space in an anarchic system ??
-Reputation system is just a mess!!
-playing with friend is just impossible as the server seems to randomly let join you . I explain, me and a friend wanted to roam together , it took us 20 min to be able to log on the same server!!
-there is no way to make fleet or thing like group of people (corp/guild /call it whatever you want )
-you promised exciting thing ..errr i found this game boring after one month ....
Rather than updating the solar system you'd better really innovate the game cause atm it seems just unfinished to me ,and selling nice paint for ship won't be enought to keep people attracted by this game, it just look like a ferrari without engine to me,beautiful but useless.

Why do some people call this a sandbox game? It's not at all. Did they fall for the marketing, I don't understand.

It's also funny to watch people pretend that a total lack of content is some of kind design feature. I mean honestly, come on now. The game is extremely shallow currently, it's on par with an alpha in terms of features. You have a couple things you can do and different colored stellar stuff to look at, that's it. It's far closer to a theme park game, it's just that all the plots are empty.

I think some people here are playing pretend a little too hard lol.

I've been playing the game for a week, it seems there's nothing to do except farm.
Either by fighting random wanted enemies or by trading:

Trade rout: Trade > earn enough to upgrade > buy a ship with more storage > repeat

Fight rout: kill wanted targets > upgrade modules / ship > kill wanted targets > repeat

There's really no sense of progress except farming money.

There's no real exploration, nothing new to do...

Believe it or not the real fun is battling with other players. At least from my own point of view.

Its just a pity there is so much forum baggage that comes with it.

Fun detected! Can't have that! You will grind trade routes till you're blue in the face.. :(

Easy , Station are looking the same, solar system are nearly looking the same ...so exploring for discovering ok ...but not to see same things everywhere.
